Shoot Em Up 2 [Includes PICS & HD VID!]

Archive: 21 posts

Hey everyone,

Before I start rambling on, I'd really appreciate it if you could play the level and give me some feedback in this thread, it would help me improve the level and future creations. I will abide by the rules of F4F and return feedback for your level. Just link me to the topic in a reply to this thread. Thanks!

Well I've finally published it. Shoot Em Up 2 is much more exciting & detailed than Shoot Em Up 1. The thermometer is at 99.6%. I really couldn't fit anymore into this level.

I'll briefly explain the plot:
Your name is Johnson. You are sleeping in your Cabin and you've received a very important call. You've been told to head down to to the Docking Station of SMT HQ, and to travel to Station BETA to find out why they have lost communications. Sgt. Higgs has reserved a pod for you, which you jump into and set off to Station B. Station A, (Sgt. Higgs) will be able to contact you throughout the journey. On the way, you get caught in a nasty attack and get sucked into an alien ship. You have to fight your way out. Ironically, you discover that it was actually the aliens that have attacked station B!

Shoot Em Up 2 - You reach Station B - alive - and explore the station. You come across some scary things on the way, and the station is very badly damaged. There are lots of creatures to fight off, obstacles to get past, switch systems to activate & best of all, a mean boss.

Here is a video and some pics:

I started this up, and had too leave for irl stuff, but 2 problems:

Overuse of camera zones

NON-CUSTOM CONTENT! Please make your characters mmkay...?

I liked what I saw though, I'll try get around and finish it. It reminds me of LittleDeadSpace

Thanks for playing.

Where did I use a non-custom character? I may have used a few preset items but I made the characters myself. I made the little monsters roaming about the ship. (Except the marines which I just painted, since they look real enough.)

Also, for the camera zones, yeah it's very hard not to use one because my level has so many switch system tucked around the metal, if didn't use a camera zone, you'd see all of them.

I think the boss will make up for everything though. =P

Thanks for the comments.

What I do on all my levels to hide the switches is to just create a slab of dark matter waaay up in the corner of the level and then place all my complex switches on that. That way you don't need to be so precise with the camera angles.

But I've seen some pretty crazy switch arrays you've created and they are alot more complex than what I typically make and use.

Brilliant idea, but I don't think mine would fit in a corner lol. I'll send you the level one day and you can explore it, check out how it works. Meanwhile, I've just added some pics and an HD video! =D2009-04-19 23:07:00

Sweet pics Trickster. It takes a little eye candy for me to get interested enough to play a level these days (too many bad level experiences). I am Definately checking this one out soon. I make a list of levels to play then try them all in 1 day (usually about once a month). Wish I could play more but I'm too busy with endless stuff (most of it not fun either).

But SEU-2 is on the list, as it is a new level, I'll make sure to try it by tomorrow.

Very nice one. "Inspired by darknessbear". Yeah it looks even like a remake of LittleDeadSpace. There are way more similaritys then necessary expect the Aliens. Which space station doesn't have any?

The only things i could complain about are the long pauses(i know you try to build suspense) and before the boss when you fall into the hole. I died there by hitting some gas. Don't know what's the point of gas there. Only one hole to fall into.

About the F4F bit. Don't know. Nothing up from my side ATM.

Thanks for the review. The hole bit is a little more complicated than it sounds. Since that whole part of the station starts to shake, I couldn't put the boss underneath it since it would start hitting the boss. So when you fall into the hole, it is actually a small box attached to a piston that takes you across the level very quickly and throws you into the boss arena. I had to put gas around it to prevent anyone falling to the bottom of the level. Were you able to get to the boss after you died from the gas?2009-04-20 19:39:00

Argh, I'm having trouble editing some of my own posts. Nothing happens when I edit a post. >.<

It is actually a sticker. I'm not sure where to find it, but it adds that final touch to the levels. ...........JUST found out where to get it. SHOULD be in The Collectors Lair... I can't be certain but most mechanical objects/stickers are there.

AppellesJr - it's in the decorations menu of the sticker tool in popit. I think they call it L shaped bracket or something like it.

Checked out the levels tonight and they have some great stuff going on in them. You have a gift for dealing with switches that I can only admire and aspire to.

Liked the general layout and look of the level - I does have a lot of the same mechanics and some of the feel of L.B. Dead Space but it's different.

The lighting is fantastic in some spots and sort of plain in others but on the whole it's pretty good. I especially enjoyed the lighting in that section with the three switches you pull next to the stairs with the amber/yellow underlighting and the shafts of white light when the ship's doors open.

The MM content that was mentioned above I think is a reference to the plastic army soldiers. At first they were sort of a turn off for me too. I generally prefer all custom content but I'm not always against using MM stuff. (I use it in some of my levels too - especially the early ones) I'm still not sold on them but after a while they were kind of funny to keep running into.

The wait times for dramatic effect I can deal with too - but the elevator rides are so long. You're asking for a lot of patience from a player in those moments and the ratings you're getting may be reflecting their lack thereof.

The biggest success on your levels seems to be your bosses. Really cool set up, nice staging and tricky angles to dispatch them.

Overall - a fun and challenging level that I enjoyed playing. I gave it 4 stars and tagged it great! Thanks for sharing it!

Thanks very much for the feedback Morgana25, I really appreciate it.

For the people who were having trouble with the boss, I've made it a little easier:
I've made it so that the appearing brains on the boss are easier to get to. Originally, you had to get the paintinator, go to the front layer (the one most towards the camera) and shoot them from there. This is because I had originally put the brains on the front layer rather than the back one. I have edited the boss and changed the brains to the back layer now. So all you have to do is grab the paintinator, come out of that little hole in the wall and just shoot the brains (from the back layer.) Once you get all of them, the boss falls apart and the door opens (to finish the level..)

I've just published V1.04 of Shoot Em Up 2. This includes:

- MUCH faster ASG ship (ship at beginning.)
- MUCH faster transport POD (the thing that takes you to storage.)
- MUCH MUCH faster elevator (not like that slow thing that gets you frustrated.)
- A new 'radio' where Sgt. Higgs takes you through the steps on how to kill the boss during the boss fight. =D
- And some minor switch & sound changes.

The elevators and ships, pods etc.. are MUCH faster, no more waiting around! I'm sure you'll agree, they have gone down from 1 minute to 20 seconds max!

Thats all for now. Let me know if you come across any bugs, would love some feedback for the level, and of course, have fun!

Good question. I haven't touched LBP until today for a week. So I am behind in the BTR series for what I was hoping to have done by now. So any time I have until my latest chapter is done will be spent creating. I'm about 1/2 way though this latest BTR level. I'll be heavily PLAYING LBP after that though so we'll hook up. You can show me around Shoot Em' Up-2! TTYL
