Joystiq's LBP Interview with Pete Smith and Jim Unwin

Archive: 26 posts

The game's finished, guys!!

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/joystiq-interview-littlebigplanets-pete-smith-and-jim-unwin/

Oh, and credit goes to both Joystiq.com for the article, and LiBiPl.net for findin' it and sharing. :] Go, leebeepull!

EDIT: (to clarify why the game's already finished but not yet shipped)

Why we have to wait 2 months if the game is already finished? http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/1609/heulnm5.gif

Other games announce there release date and aren't finished, and they are finished short before the release date..

My guess is, fixing some final bugs and glitches... Not to mention that the game is very online-heavy, so they'll probably be doing the Beta now in September (remember, YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!). They need to make the online mode really solid, make sure everything works out good. Not to mention the week or two for disc, box and booklet production. d:

Great read...soooo..
Its going to take me 12 hours before I start the create side of the game...
I want to beat the game and unlock everything before I bother to create...

Great article. Nice to hear the game is finished and ready to go!!

Does anyone know the difference between the regular playthrough, and the create playthrough? I was reading in another article about these being two ways to play the game in the single player.

Also the release date for US is October 21st or the 28th? Or is it later?

I think I read somewhere that the create playthrough unlocks different stuff than the play playthrough. My guess is the stuff you unlock in creative will be a bit more complex than the play stuff. Can't remember where I read this though.

And as the article says only EU date has been finalised but the US is usually a few days before the EU. I hope everyone gets it on the same day though.

I didn't know that that was all there was of LBP when it was announced, that's pretty cool. Very high quality vertical slice of the game which is always a great idea.

Nice to hear HDD importing can be patched in though I'm guessing there'd be much more copyright infringement then.

12 hours... very cool. A perfect length I think (long enough so it looks good on paper but not too long either... I hate games that are long for the sake of being long) and it'll probably take longer to unlock everything.

And... it's finished... why oh why can't we have it now... .

Right on. Hopefully it's the 21st, the wait is excruciating.

Indeed.. Give me my LBP!!

Hmm on the one hand it's irritating knowing that the game is finished and not due out for two months but on the other it is comforting to know that delays are unlikly to occur.2008-08-26 09:29:00

There's a thermometer in the Create mode which shows how complex your level is. This is just a rough estimation and we've only ever seen it maxed out once and that was here, at Leipzig. One guy kept a level open for an entire day while groups of German press rotated in and more content was added. By the end of the day it was maxed out, but none of our levels, the ones on the game disc, even come close.

This was the point I was not sure about, that we'll have enough space to make our levels just as great they made it. But this looks very nice guys

Yeah it's kind of amazing how that was such early stages for the game. Feel kinda cheated about it in a way though. When I first saw LBP I thought, 'WOW imagine what else it can do!' At that time the answer was 'nothing' lol. But at least now, at the completed start we can see (almost) all the amazing things LBP has on offer!

I liked what I read hear as well. Because we have started to see some pretty complex levels come from the game, The Wedding and Swinging Safari for example. And he said none of the levels on the game disc even come close to maxing out the thermometer.

I also feel very happy to see this in the article:

Could you clarify for us whether image importing into LittleBigPlanet is only via the PlayStation Eye? Or are there other methods?

At the moment it's only possible with the PlayStation Eye, but other methods could be patched in later. There's so much stuff we want to put in this game, but if we add all of it before launch, it's never going to come out. So there's a lot of stuff that we've had to delay. We say delay, and not cut, because that's exactly what we mean. This game was made to have content patched in later.

It looks like they just had to prioritize features and this one just didn't make the release date schedule but it'll be patched in at a later date <phew>.
I promise to stop complaining and whining and *****ing about cut features....well that was the only thing I was fuming about so it's all plain sailing from here until release.

And YES reading that the level limits are hugh is VERY reasuring. I was wondering about that today as to whether we'd get the same amount of space and complexity into our levels as the dev's or whether they'd nootered the level size limit.

Once Media Molecule's finished with it, the code goes to Sony for their additional QA and certification as both the publisher and the platform holder. I can easily see that taking several weeks. It's been a while since I produced a boxed product, but depending on the size of the initial run it may take more than a week or two to produce all of the blu-rays, booklets, and boxes. And, that's assuming that all of the localization is already complete...

That didn't comfort me as much. I really don't think the problem was that they didn't have enough time in regards to the image importing - they simply didn't want levels to take up that much space. It would be pretty easy to code an image importer; I think they're more covering up with that statemeny, which is fair. I assume they are going to come out with a lot of extras, just not image importing unless there's a huge community push (and there probably will be).
