is it ok to put prizes in score bubbles now?

Archive: 17 posts

just wondering what everybody thinks about putting prizes in our 50 pt score bubbles now that the option to collect can be turned off with Yarg. Will adding prizes actually help your level's popularity? Should we or shouldn't we start doing this? I wasn't doing it because people (myself included) were getting sick of having to delete them all the time.

On another note, does an empty prize bubble take up less therm then a filled prize bubble?

I think so. There are lots of little kids that love prize bubbles, and if you don't like it....then just turn it off.2009-04-18 19:21:00

Whereas I think it is fine to put something in them, don't just overuse score bubbles
That's really annoying for me.
Make them hard to get, so people explore your level and go for replay value.

Up until about a fortnight ago I would`ve agreed with having bubbles only as rewards. then I had a great night playing mp where every point bubble was contested over and the result was one of the best times on LBP I`ve had.

Before that, for me LBP had been a single player experience for the most part. My levels tend to be single player orientated with second players having to die just to finish in most of them.

However since that night I`ve become more conscious of multiplayer and something as simple as putting a few point bubbles the other side of a fire pit, thus making it a race to get across can turn your level from good, to being great fun as far as the mp is concerned.

something else I can't remember; do you still get the 50 pts for a prize bubble WITH a prize in it? 2009-04-18 21:36:00

I still don't really like the idea and I myself is an example of why.

I play and make levels that might require to collect a sticker to use a switch somewhere. This means i'm playing with prize collecting at "on" by default.

It STILL is less of an pain than before tks to the "delete all" option but it's annoying nonetheless.

There okay but just don't put junk in them... That makes me angry when I find a piece of floaty material with a mouth on it...2009-04-19 03:43:00

This is a very interesting point. Has anyone tested what happens if a sticker that is given as a prize to be used later on a switch is collected by someone with this new option set NO (do not collect community stickers)? Will the player then be unable to trigger the switch later in the level? This "option" may well render some levels unfinishable (<-- not really a word)- or at least partially broken. I know it would ruin my 00Sack - Betrayed finish.

It would totally break Sack's In The City. Well, not that the level couldn't be finished because it's impossible to not finish it but he wouldn't be able to compete the museum since he need to find the paintings and put them at the right place...

I think the best way around it is to warn players that collecting items is integral to completion. You could add a note in the description, or if you want to make absolutely sure they know, you could just tell them with a Magic Mouth at the start of your level.2009-04-19 07:30:00

We should test this and find out exactly what happens when you collect an object during a level with collection turned off.2009-04-19 13:15:00

yes testing is needed on this. Hopefully this is something MM had considered when programming the Yarg. Thankfully I never used custom stickers as switch triggers.
At the moment I have a Huge library of objects I've created from my Below the Root series. Some are really good. But I think I will have to delete them to make space or maybe publish a blank level with nothing but these prizes on it.

I have tested this. And indeed it does not work. The sticker is not collected and hence does not show up in the Sticker Switches section of your pop-it menu. Changing to Collect=Yes at this point is also of no use - the object/prize bubble has been removed/popped (you still get your 50 points though!). Only recourse is to restart the level with the Collect setting toggled back On.

This sucks. As I hate little primers at the beginning of levels (i.e. "Please turn on Community Object Collection to use this level") I will no longer create any level requiring the use of sticker switches. Glad I didn't pick up that PSEye I was planning on getting.

It really is too bad that Mm doesn't use some forethought when they make changes. I love that they are listening to the community and trying to make things better, but wouldn't you think someone at Mm or Sony would have realized this as a problem?

Of course the blame is on Media Molecule not thinking their things through. They really are bad in QA already, actually they also may have an excellent QA team with a clusterfock of a programming team and you get the same unpolished results...

I mean, when you load a level, the game already knows that there are X and Y prizes and that there are sticker switches that requires X and Y stickers. It would have been extremely easy to create an exception so when you have the prize option "off", what's needed for switches is collected regardless. This is just ONE MORE "if" in their code logic and it would have taken like what, mins to do??

They should have made it so it deletes at the end of the level, not when collected. Hopefully this will be fixed. I'm in the middle of making a set of levels that rely on sticker switches. I guess, I'll need to make sure one can get through without using any stickers.2009-04-20 03:11:00

This could be their easy fix for now if they ever patch bugs again.
And yeah, looks like this feature just confirms I will never make a level where the ending is reachable depending on you having a certain sticker. Still interesting to use the sticker switch in extra sections, secrets, etc.

I like to add them to make people explore in the level for them. I tend to put the stuff I made the level with. Hopefully people will even actually want to use them...

But it should be stuff that is worthwhile.
