Jungle fun (Spotlighted)

Archive: 36 posts

Heres my new level, I've spent an unhealthy amount of time on this as I've Sprained my ankle. So can't get out much.

You start waking up in your village, wanting some bread only to find the bridge to the shops is down. This is how your quest starts.

A brief summary of the level:

Use a see-saw to catapult yourself out of the village
You have to swim (run) up an underground river
Solve a puzzle
A mine cart ride with the track that collapes
Find your way into Pete's palace make a life or death decision.
Escape from rolling fire rocks.
Defeat Pete in a final show down.

Please give it a try and let me know of any problems you find. Also as i've played it alot so I'm unsure if i've got the difficulty right?.

Make sure to let me know which of your levels you'd like me to try.

OK,
just played through this and I must say it was very fun. The cheeky visuals and clever use of matierials kept me entertained the whole way through. I do, however, have a couple of suggestions:
1. Add a checkpoint straight after the mine cart section - i managed to die at the end and having to walk it was slightly frustrating. I also think it would be more fun if there was 2 seperate tracks, each in a thin layer, but that may require some surgery, so its not essential.
2. Drop the double-life checkpoint by the elctrified centipedes down to a normal one to make the level slightly more difficult.
3. Add arrows in the jetpack section telling you where to go - I got lost and died several times because I had no idea where I was going.
4. Add a magic mouth explaining the blow up the spider section a bit more.
All in all a great level, would have been 4 stars and a heart if my stupid internet hadn't cut out.

Luckily the servers are back up now and I've played your level. Overall, it has a lot of fun enjoyble puzzles, nice visuals and a good boss battle.

Pros:
+Cartoony visuals
+Solid boss battle with no bugs (except the boss itself xD)
+Every character is well thought out and has it's own personality
+Lots of places to explore
+Lots of score bubbles to be found
+Fun to play
+I got the high score!

Cons:
-Paintinator had limited shots when shooting the snake
-I got the same Mine cart problem as above

Overall I thought it was a 4 star level - and it is very fun!

Cheers SatansPit.

I've added a hint to help you through the maze. A voice now whispers about how the Spider stickers lead to the exit. Also added a speak mouth to explain the free or kill decision. The mine cart is a little trickier and I'm going to have a play with it.

Thanks for playing.

Hi coxy224, Cheers for the feedback.

I have made the end of the mine carts a bit easier by making it a bigger area to jump into and if you don't jump at all your less likely to die. It's a bit of a rammed area so difficult to shift things around. You don't trigger a check point if your in are cart so it ruled that out.

The paint is limited because if you constantly shoot the snake the see saw doesn't have enough time to reset before the next weight is dropped on it and breaks. So limited paint is to stop this from happening.

Is there a level you'd like me to try of yours?

Ok then, gladto see that it was cleared up with the paint thing.
It really is annoying when everything is close together

Oh and could you try out Coastin' in the Jungle (link is in my sig)
Thanks

Ok, I just gave this level a shot. I absolutely love this level! Man, this was so much fun and had a lot of creativity in it.

I love it when someone just opens the floodgates of creativity and lets it rip.

Couple things that could use improving:

Right at the beginning - the glass door that slams open and shut - as stupid as it sounds, I would be willing to bet this is one of the reasons for your 3 star rating on this level (which is CLEARLY a 4 or 5 star level). When someone first starts playing, they haven't figured out that they need to jump forward out of the building yet. And when they're trying to figure it out, the glass door keeps slamming open and shut over and over again, which seems amaturish. I would personally put the door on a permanent switch so it opens more slowly, then stays open. It would give the player the feeling that this is a well-designed level.

The second thing - right below the snake, if you walk behind the tree you fall completely to the bottom of the level.

I also agree with not limiting the paintinator shots when trying to shoot the snake.

However, minor quibbles aside - this is a fantastic level. 5 stars and hearted.

Nice...four stars and hearted.

I thought the challenge was at just about the right level...die a couple of times then suss it out the next time and move on to the next area. Great set pieces and bug enemies, and the boss was pretty cool too.

There were one or two issues though. In one area it's possible to jump from the explosives box to that lever which (I think) you're actually meant to jump on the glowy bug to get to. Also, the mine cart needs to be timed to expire soon after it reaches the bottom, with another being emitted in it's place at the top, so if you die on the track and return to the previous checkpoint then you can ride another cart down the track instead of having to hoof it down there yourself. There are also some bits where you can fall below the level and not die, meaning you have to go with the try again option. Either way you lose a life, but gamplay wise it's better to die than to be stuck in limbo.

An all round cool level though, and one that I would play again once you've worked on a few minor issues.

Drop the double-life checkpoint by the elctrified centipedes down to a normal one to make the level slightly more difficult.

I have to say that I`d never recommend this. I feel it`s an awfully cheap way to up the difficulty, since all it achieves is making players go all the way back to the start of your level which is never welcome.

If you feel the need to add challenge, make the obstacles harder.

As for the level:

More checkpoints. I died after the mine cart and got fired way back above the glass conveyor belt.
The cart has to be emitted. Any vehicle should be emitted in fact. Especially when you have a potentially fatal obstacle righ after you get out of it.

I really enjoyed this level! I think the main thing that stood out to me was how varied this level was. There was platforming, shooting, puzzle solving, chase sequences, moral dilemmas (kill bug or let him go), puzzles, and a boss fight! And the visuals are just as varied as the gameplay which gave me the feeling of traversing a large world.

The difficulty was just right in my opinion and I didn't run into many issues at all. Good job!

Hey

I'm just posting to let you know I played it, and I liked it. 4 stars and a heart.

The level reminds me of most peoples first levels, in that it is good, but lacks a bit of polish.

I would have given it 5 stars, but one of the spiders legs got trapped in the chute at the end, preventing me from finishing.

Thanks for feedback. Now you mention it the glass door could be alot better if it opened slower. I thought I had blocked all the holes up I will check this out. I agree it can be a pain if you miss the snake and use up all your paint. But it better this than the see saw break and have to restart the level. I have up the amount of paint you get though, so shouldn't run out.

Ungreth
Thanks for feedback. You have got some patience. Your correct in that you should use the bug to jump to the lever. I tried to do this while testing and never made it. I will 'Ungeth' proof it. Emitted cart is a good idea and will solve the problem, also i'll add a check point closer to the mine cart.

Mat82
Cheers for playing. Sounds like the mine cart is the main problem.

Mrsupercomputer
Thanks for your kind words. It's cool you felt you went on a long journey that was something i was hoping to achieve.

dkjestrup
Thanks for playing. One of the legs getting stuck is not good. This originally happened when I made the boss but i made the legs grabble so you can pull them out the way. Where you unable to pull it out? I will check out your level.

Heres the fixes:
Door on beginning house more refined.
Ammo for paint gun increased
Hole behind tree filled in.
Ungreth proofed the first lever switch in the puzzle room.
Check point added in glow bug room. Entrance to tunnel to mine cart made easier to enter.
Mine cart now emitted so multiple tries possible.
End of cart ride made alot easier and almost fool proof.
Holes filled in and gas used to stop falling to floor of level.

Please give it another try if you have the time and let me know how it is.
Thanks

The problem was it got stuck in the whole, around a corner. I would've needed a jetpack to get it out. What you could to is put an invisible thin layer wall, and put thin layer material on the legs, so they cannot do that.2009-04-18 23:14:00

cool level - lots of fun to play and I really liked your critters and the boss character! Noticed one of the tiny triangle shaped glass ramp things isn't glued down and slides out from under my sackboy.

gave it 5 stars and a heart! Nice work!

Oh ok. I'll fix this. Update: The legs are now dissolvable and if the go near the exit they trigger a switch and dissolve.

Cool, top spot nice one. Lots of parrots bit the dust then

Glad you liked it. I've been meaning to glue that down everytime I edit it, cheers for reminding me.

I just played your level, great job. I loved the style of the visuals throughout, the story and the custom characters looked fantastic. You had some nice set pieces set up like the catapult, underground river section and the maze following the spiders. I thought you made great use of the carved animals material by turning it into individual creature decorations, nice idea, the enemies in the same section were also custom made and looked great.

The only problem I had in this otherwise fantastic level was the boss was a little easy, but its no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Excellent work, 5*, brilliant, and hearted#

Its criminal this only has 3 stars

Thanks for that. I keep wanting to up the difficulty of the boss. You should try the Original version with the key given away at the end. Thats how the boss was originally but I got scared people couldn't cope with it and dumb it down.

I'm gutted it's only 3 but when it was first published it did have some problems. I think about republishing as new to see if it could make 4 stars but not sure if this would be a good thing to do.

Well it might be a good idea if some issues are fixed, I definetly think this is at least worthy of 4 star average rating.

It whether you want to lose your current hearts plays and comments though in the end.

Yeah, definately republish it.

My first level, after feedback, was 2-3 stars on average. I republished the EXACT same level the other day, 4 stars, 4 hearts 8 plays. One guy gave me a comment saying it was definately in the top 10 levels he'd ever played and thought it was Fantastic (which, I'll admit, it isnt worthy of that praise) That just made my day. It is still sitting at 4 stars, with good tags and a much higher play/heart ratio that before!

Just played this again and thought it was amazing, 5 stars and a heart. Also played the original and gave it 4 stars. I onhestly think this deserves spotlighting, and considering all three 'judges' appear to have played it...
Great level though! Inspired me to get my Amazon Adventure level underway.

Just to mention something about the star ratings. My Splat Invaders II level was originally 3 stars and few plays. I republished it with people here giving me initial high ratings, and it ended up as a 4 star level with quite a few plays on page 2 of cool levels.

Many times the star rating is unilaterally chosen by the first people who play a level (even if it's a random 7 year old out there somewhere) and people get a bad taste in their mouth about a level before even trying it - they ASSUME it's a 3 star level and treat it as such.

I play a LOT of levels, and this is certainly NOT a 3 star level. A few of my favorite all time levels are NOT 3 star levels, but they are.... 218 from OCK - An absolute masterpiece... 3 stars. Quite a few of NinjaMicWZ's levels - masterpieces - 3 stars (OMG, check out his Metal Slug level sometime!). Many of Takelow's levels - the most beautiful creations you've ever seen in LBP - 3 stars.

Hi there bindibaji!

Just been an idiot and posted my review for Jungle Fun on the Hyper Cube Frenzy thread! Silly mare that I am. Anyway, here we go...

I just played your level. It looks great, the instructions are clear, and I loved it! For me, it had a great mix of platform, puzzle, ingenuity and little secret areas (such as on the jetpack following the spiders). I enjoy a challenging level, and although I noticed there's a harder version, I found this to be quite difficult without being frustrating. I think I finished about 92nd on the scoreboard, so not bad for a 39-year-old woman!

In summary, I reckon this is a well-balanced level, and I'm just a little peeved that it's currently 3-star. In my eyes, much better. Well done!

Rated 5* and hearted. Tagged with 'Satisfying'.
