Broken Picture Telephone (Hilarity Abounds)

So I've just discovered this online game, Broken Picture Telephone. Some of you'ze might have heard of it. It's getting popular, and so the site's becoming a bit sluggish at times, and I've LOST some of my masterpieces (grrrr...), but it's still worthwhile.

You all know the game Broken Telephone. We played it as kids. The first kid whispers "The tyranasaurus went to the store", and it goes down a long line of whispering kids, one to the other, and the last kid hears "Purple monkey dishwasher".

Well, this is that game, but online and with a Pictionary twist. It is absolutely hysterical. To get you started with the funny-times:

This also somehow helps if you've got the played-to-much-lbp syndrome. You'll be finding inspiration every game you go

The drawing tool could definitely be a LOT better. It's hard even with a stylus. Having not even tried the mouse, I can't even imagine. But looking at the completed games, it's usually the really rough, screwed-up drawings that end up causing the most hilarity. Here's my favorite thing that happens:

A sincere beginning, and a couple of detailed drawings and close, or near-close captions.
Then a really awful drawing causes a caption to be interpreted TOTALLY differently, usually something utterly bizarre and nonsensical.
Cue another really detailed drawing, now of the totally weird thing.

Hilarious every time. I can't wait to see some of the ones I've done when they're completed games. It's a lot of fun waiting for the finished games. It's like getting a present. There was one I did where I had to draw "The most amazing thing ever." I couldn't come up with anything, but I didn't want the opportunity to go to waste. Eventually it came to me (and fits with the easter theme of late).

There's another fun game I used to play with friends and nothing but pencils and paper - we'd each draw a head and the beginnings of a neck, and then fold the paper down and pass them around in a cirlce. Each person draws the body, connected to the neck, without seeing the head, and passes it down, and then draws legs.

Afterwards you all unfold the paper and witness the gruesome spectacles that your hands have created. Good times all around!

Is it just me, or is there something up with BPT?? Yesterday when I started, I got several emails throughout the day of finished games. Today I've had NOTHING. No emails at all about finished games. I imagine with all the games I've played... literally DOZENS... at least one would have finished. What the hell? I really hope they haven't been lost.		2009-04-16 08:52:00

Indeed, I've broken a hundred notes in only a couple days! That's sign of an obsession right there.

But in terms of actual finished games, it's far, far, far less. I can't look at any of those pictures I drew, or captions I wrote, until the games complete. I'm just hoping they DO complete. It occurs to me that I've skipped a lot of notes because they were just so awful or obviously trolled and killed. If other people take that same reaction, entire games will die out and never be completed.

The attitude is: Take what you're given. If it's racist, if it's hateful, if it's ugly, if it's gross, if it's bland, if it's difficult... Whatever it is, take it, and SAVE it. Someone along the line tried to ruin it, and if you hit that "skip" button, they win. The way to play this game is to always, ALWAYS play what you're given, and save it when it gets nasty.

It's funny to see a lot of recurring images and cliches propping up. Some things you see a lot of:

Ghosts
Ninjas
Pirates
Wizards
Obama (I've had to draw him twice - one time on his inauguration and the other being him fighting a bunch of Russian special forces on board Air Force One)

Anyway... Looking forward to some of these games finally coming in. I'm expecting I'll probably get a sudden flood of like 50 emails with finished games.

I did the same thing - at first I just spent time looking at a lot of the highest-rated ones of all-time and of the week and day, and just laughing myself SILLY. But it's got a funny way of really, really making you want to jump in. It's kind of like being out at a beach on a sunny day, and a bunch of people are out in the water enjoying it. Sitting there baking in the sun is fine and good, but you gots to dive in there. It makes you want to participate and be a part of some of these ridiculous stories that unfold.		2009-04-16 10:43:00

Also, I've had a few masterpieces of my own that weren't saved. One was 2 ghosts drinking coffee. I ended up bringing it back in another one: "it was a dark and stormy night...", and I drew a graveyard during a big storm, and there are some ghosts just chilling in the cemetery, playing golf, drinking coffee.

I've done so many that it's ceased to be able to handle the sheer number of backed up games I've been in. out of well over 100 games over several days, none are being completed, none are coming in. There have been a few times where I got the "game couldn't be saved" error, which suuuuucked, considering I almost always spend at LEAST 5 minutes on a drawing, many the full 10 minutes, with 12 seconds or so left to spare. But most of them have been fine.

I've hit up the discussion boards there, and it seems a lot of people are having the same issue right now. The problem is that there's been a major spike in popularity thanks to posts on digg and reddit and the like, and general word of mouth (like us). But the game isn't ready to cope with the larger number of people, as there are NO limitations in place. Writing a panel takes 5-10 seconds, drawing one takes 5-10 minutes, so you get way more people writing than drawing. Many of the people who want to write and can't, start new games. Because the funniest ones are always the long 45-panel games, you get a lot of people starting a lot of 45-panel games on the same day. This clogs up the game with such a huge and disproportionate number of panels that need to be DRAWN that single games are taking a really long time to complete.

They need to impose limitations on how many games you can start per day, and possibly even in how many you can write in an alotted time. That'll at least start to remedy the problems.		2009-04-16 22:20:00

Well I just got a private game come up about half hour ago.
And YES it did just light up
I don't know anyone else on there other than you guys and my missus (who loves this now after I showed it to her) and it wasn't from her.

So I guess it's the LBPC game. I was on the laptop as well so was hard to draw lol (I keep accidentally joining games when on the laptop and I'm just going on to check if there are any more finished games of mine )

We should get a list on the OP of people from here with their exact names on BTP.

I'm SURE there's a way you can get your tablet working. You just need to find out where to turn off the "hold down mouse button for right click" option. It may not be in tablet properties but in mouse properties? Are you on a Mac?

The site needs MAJOR work right now. In fact, I'm not going to play anymore games until they fix what's broken or convince me that my drawings aren't being lost. I'm waiting on somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 games to be completed - My girlfriend, when she logs in, is inundated with finished games, and on top of that, gets a wide smattering of write panels in addition to drawing ones.

When I log in, there's never (NEVER) a write panel, and NO games come in completed. So something's definitely up with certain accounts.

I honestly think it's just like a single dude running this site in his spare time. What he needs to do is get sponsored and hire a staff. He's certainly got enough visitors to the site daily. I wouldn't mind putting up with ads if it meant a working site.		2009-04-17 22:19:00

Yup, no private game for me either. I have gotten a couple of finished games mailed to me... but it's going incredibly slow for me. They need to sort out their crap. For now I'm doing the occasional drawing and mainly just enjoying reading the day's top-rated games. It never ceases to make me laugh hysterically.

Oh god. Another site that's had me laughing lately. It's xtranormal.com. You write a simple dialogue scene, pick your characters, character voices, action, and camera angles (it's incredibly simple), and then watch a scene play out in 3D with robo-voices. It's pretty hilarious to play around with. One guy has put up about 4 videos, and I couldn't breathe from laughing:

You're right about this being seriously underdeveloped. I wouldn't change too much about the crappy drawing tools/writing space. It makes it a huge challenge to illustrate what your description is. One little annoying thing is that the pointer is slightly off centre >_>

Yup :S.................. The worst thing is.... I was waiting for ages for any of my games to be completed........... checked my recent games......... took ages to load......... finally got there, 3 new games were completed! ...................... tried loading the first one........ site completely grinded to a halt.

How does a private game work? Do you have to have the same amount of players as there are levels?? A friend of mine started one, he invite only me and another friend. It never came to our turn :S And I think the private game is just lost forever.......

Also I've started 9 games, some going back to about 3 weeks ago. None of them have been completed

Yep... I guess the best way to always have new completed games waiting for you is to actually keep playing! It works! The last 4 games I played were all completed the same day I played them. Also, you can choose if you ONLY want to write, or draw. This is good cause sometimes I get a load of drawings to do in a row and simply get exhausted trying to work with the drawing app... Just to let people know, an update's just come in for BPT!

Two very vital things have been fixed/added:

- the cursor is now fixed. Its not off centre now. This is something that was seriously bugging me... it always took at least a minute off my time cause of trial and error trying to place dots etc...

- a "watch user" system has been added. It's basically handy as a friend system. You can watch people who have really awesome art. Their name (with a link to their page) will be displayed on your page! You'll also be able to see who's watching you!

I'd also like to say BPT is just as awesome as always... a load of trolls have joined and are trying their hardest to ruin games... BUT BPT's user base is just so creative and awesome that everyone straight away burns them and turns their obscenities into something beautiful 		2009-05-10 18:44:00

Well now I'm getting emails like an hour from when I competed, which is awesome. Before I had to wait like a week for it to come back.

Yes, the trolls have been a real killer. I must have 70 games that have been nearly ruined because of a troll. What's insane is that it's mostly just the same couple of guys. There's only a tiny handful of them that do it over, and over, and over, and over, and over. The site has a report feature, and a negative-ranking feature.
