Trike ride?

Archive: 26 posts

Tested this idea out on beta. Works great. Much more effective than most of the vehicles I've seen. I'm still tweaking the design a bit. I want it to be a little faster and keep the sled a little more stable. I've got a design and track setup to test it if anyone wants to see.

I want rockets!

Just an idea off the top of the pile. This is actually the simple version of this vehicle/contraption. Not much to it but it would allow for some slightly different racing levels or sections. Rather than just flat ramps and hills you could place obstacles on the track as well that it would hop over or get launched into the air by.

The frame will rotate freely while the rider remains in an upright position. Each wheel is motorized.

I have to make a correction here. I guess I didn't explain it very well.

This vehicle isn't designed to rotate like in the lower part of the image. It's designed to overcome small obstacles in that manner only. It basically drives on the two wheels on the bottom until it launches on a ramp or rams into a small obstacle.

If it flips or lands on any of the sides, that side becomes the bottom. The sackboy all the meanwhile, assuming he doesn't get launched into space, will remain right side up.

Reminds me of a remote-control car I had as a kid. Looks great~!

dang with a ride like that you could make some awesome levels that are crazy steep hills and ramps and such.2008-08-25 13:48:00

You could make a level where there are loops and vertical walls and such, because as long as there where two sides where the wheels could touch and the 'motors' had enough power, and as the platform in the middle always stays upright, you could go all over the place. If that made any sense.2008-08-25 18:04:00

Another great thing about it, you can't accidentally flip it after a massive jump. I wan't to put this thing on a massive halfpipe.2008-08-25 19:14:00

awesome idea You could do more then 3 wheels if you wanted, even totaly enclose it in wheels. But i think it would be cool to have the top one spinning the other way, just to see what would happen. If tyou went in a tunnel that was just the right size, theoreticaly, it should cause the vehicle to speed up.2008-08-30 15:55:00

Nice idea. I don't think it would work, though. The bottom wheels would just move it, the top one would probably just sit there. Try to fix it up, and it would be epic.2008-09-03 02:01:00

Uh. Maybe I didn't explain it very well.

The bottom wheels are to just move it. The top wheel will just sit there. If your drove that badboy up to a block [proportional to the size of the vehicle] or hit a jump, the frame then freely moves while the sackboy remails upright. There really isn't a top or a bottom to the vehicle. The sled in the middle is free moving as well. It's not attached to the frame in a solid way but rotates freely on a bolt.

I think it will work. All the principles are sound. It's not designed to tumble along but have the ability to drive on any side it lands on.

That's a sweet ride - nice job man. That's what I want to see. Lots of creative ideas searching for original ways to do something as simple as move forwards!2008-09-03 13:11:00

I love this idea man! Maybe we can hold vehicle contests after the game releases! =D

Fastest vehicle to overcome this obstacle course is the WEENARR! xD

Ah, okay. I thought you wanted the whole thing to move like a wheel. I see it now, that would be great on rough terrain.2008-09-04 05:25:00

Yeah, this is a ATV. With this you can really push it to the limits because you can let the ATV go over lava stuff, and the player needs to stay on this ! Nice idea indeed !

A TRIKE!!!????!

I really love to use my bike,
I ride it everywhere.
People see my golden trike,
They all begin to stare.

When I want to go outside,
I do not walk around.
Intead, I try out my new wheels,
Which I have just now found.

It does if you say sickle...

I think the forums are getting very spammy...

The idea in this thread is great. Nice work.

But then whats a motorsickle?

Anyway, back on topic.
Great idea.

But there is some flaws.
If you pull on the switch twice, you will be upside-down with no support

Not quite.

It's not supposed to move like the illustration on the lower part of the image. That type of movement would be the result of coming into contact with something proportional to the size of the "trike". The switch would not be there to somehow make the trike tumble. That would be extremely different and an arm or some sort of counter weight would be required.

The sled and therefore the sackboy are connected to the arms and wheels by a free moving bolt. There's no motor attached to the center of the frame that would make the sackboy flip.

If what has been said about the physics of the game is correct, then it should be easy to lower the center of gravity of the sled with a flat metal base. This should keep the sackboy upright and not flip. He may rock back and forth though and there would be no way of actually keeping him on if he hit a big wall. [No way that I know of as of now ]

The big Y only rotates when the wheels come in contact with an obstacle or starts to flip in the air due to the motion and velocity its carrying. Otherwise, it just rolls along on whatever wheels are touching the ground.

As for a switch. It could simply be one of those "grab switches" [sorry I forgot the name of it]. As long as a sackboy is holding onto the grabswitch on the sled, it will continue to move.

[B]The idea is to have a vehicle with no top and it should will always roll along no matter how it lands a jump, while keeping the sackboy safely in the middle.

Yeah, the part where the sackboy stands isn't fixed, it hangs down below the middle of the Y. So as the Y and the wheels flip, the cockpit will just rotate and hang downward the entire time.2008-09-09 21:09:00

No worries. I had to try to explain it better. It's something that I guess I'll have to make to show anyone wants to ride it. I love this game. hehe2008-09-19 00:00:00

Great idea, really. It reminds me of some of the things you can make with this. (http://fantasticcontraption.com/) The problem is that you'll definitely need to tweak it to make sure it works as intended, because according to the physics is may either end up handling like a two-wheeler with a high center of gravity, or maybe not enough power to actually get itself over anything. (Maybe a manual flipping mechanism, possible based off the "cockpit"?)

Also, if you get it to work, please don't copywrite it!
