We are starting to suffer the effect of the industrialisation of music. I mean, extreme music capitalism. It's now so casual, so ephemere. The medias and business man are creating so many "pseudo artists" and making the whole thing a 15 mins story. The more it goes casual and ephemere, the more people casually listen to music like it's nothing. They simply put headphones and buy some itunes because it's an habit and everyone does.

We are slowly losing "meaning" over "consumeurism". It's really sad and the more time goes, the more true music is losing value. In some years from now, even the concept of "an album" might disappear.

Extreme modern capitalism + digital era might actually kill real music. The only way for real artists to make money is with gigs and the ticket industry is getting more and more corrupted with the tickets sold directly from the distributor to the scammer. It's ridiculous.

I hope humans will wake up until it's too late. They don't realise the importance of art and how incredible healthy and beautiful it is. I'd even that human simply can't really evolve without art.

Ya I would agree with ranger that these music industry mongers are creating their own artifical artists more and more. But I would also argue that there are still good musicians out there. The record companies and other people just manufacturing artists like they are it's made me really cynical about some songs and everything, and thats a shame.

I am most upset about the songs I know people made on purpose to be famous. Like Buck Cherries "Crazy *****" or that bar tender song. Or pretty much any other of those newer songs related to going out and getting drunk and other cookie cutter stuff they know people will like to play when their drunk. Smart for the artist, bad for the industry

It's been kind of an interesting (and irritating) trend. Back in the 60's and 70's it was all about creativity and talent, whereas now it's more about image. They try to manufacturer stars rather than cultivate them.

Thank goodness there is still good music - you just have to look for it. Many of the same great bands such as Asia, America, Bob Segar, Def Leppard, Styx, Boston, and Journey have fantastic newer albums (and they're still selling well), but on the major stations they are being buried by the style-over-substance manufactured drivel.

Funny thing is, the production companies are just now starting to realize the biggest issue - not much residual money because those artists don't build up as big a long term committed fanbase.

Also don't mistaken me thinking there,s no good music out there. The ration good vs bad music still is beyond ridiculous to me.

I own like 400 cds, I LOVE music and I'm never pirating anything.

i think with some people (chavs) music is sort of like a status symbol

they walk around playing some terrible song about shooting people or something through their phones while it's on full volume, as if they're doing other people a favour by letting us listen to it -.-

like ranger said, musics losing it's meaning to a lot of people

There is some really good bands/artists out there, you have to look for them. I mean I listen to some mainstream bands, but only a few of their songs, who doesn't?

But the good music is really from those bands that no one has heard of, and that's what I LOVE listening to.

It's true, the music industry has ruined the meaning of true music, but you can still find it, it's just a bit harder.

Yup, I remember a time when music had talent, and music had balls. A shame no-one listens to Pink Floyd anymore.

Am I the only one who listens to full albums and not individual tracks?

I'm not very into music, but I love hundreds of songs by only a small handful of artists. New good songs might not be coming out, but that's due to there being no demand for "good" music, only for the horrible stuff.

I listen to Aerosmith, Guns n Roses, and for heavy metal the first three Disturbed albums occasionally and City of Evil by A7x.

Uh, it hasn't gone anywhere, you're just not looking hard enough. Seriously though, I tend not to listen to very popular music, and have always been into different music to my friends.

Personally, I couldn't care less what's going on with music at the moment, I prefer to just do my own thing.

Hell no you're not alone. To me a "song" and an "album" are 2 different concept worth of our attention. I LOVE albums and I wouldn't like that concept to die someday. (MP3s/Itunes/Digital distribution might ultimately lead to that despiseable future)

Um...Good music isn't gone, it has just faded into the background. It has sunk below the filth and garbage that is today's rap and emo. For example: Coheed and Cambria is the best, Iron Maiden released an album 2006, and Metallica, who I feel I've been very critical of, has released a decent album just a while ago.2009-04-15 20:54:00

I could of gone on a little rant here, but I don't have the time so I'll keep it short and sweet xD
There is still a lot of amazing music being made now, however it will not be spoon fed to you cause the mainstream music atm has gone extremely shallow and to be quite honest pretty boring. Yeah, there are some real catchy songs being released... but that's it. Nothing more to the songs really, which means a few months down the line it will be old and annoying. And everyone will just go with the flow to the next big hit.
The best music (for me anyway) is music which you can listen to over and over and never get bored of it. Obviously music tastes in everyone vary massively, but I'm sure this would be the case with most music.
Also, I find that music that grows on you can be some of the best music too. In fact when I heard the albums of a few of my favourite bands I didn't get sucked in straight away, but after a while they've become some of the best albums I've ever heard.

Anyway, you get the jist, the music is out there but you just gotta search it out sometimes And don't hesitate to try totally new genres, you may find yourself surprised at what you like

Back in MY day things were better! We had radio's, we called them wireless *CRACK* Oooooh dear. There goes my hip.

Joking xD.

But I agree, music just ISNT MUSIC anymore. I havn't even heard of real music (Though 50's Jazzy stuff is awesome) since I'm Gen Y.

Stupid rappers. I can make up my own rap song right now. Money shawtie money get low YEH YEH YEH. Repeat that and I have a #1 on my hands. But there are the good rappers out there. But when raps go into a certain territory I cant talk about, it becomes very stereotypical almost ALL of the time. Hate it -_-.

Just ALL songs in the top 50 are basically stupid. There is only room for the modern genres now like Rap, R&B, and Pop.

I like MGMT, Lilly Allen, Daft Punk remixes (Dont shoot me -_-), Ratatat for some general listening, Asian-Kung-Fu-Generation, The Ting Tings, Cartel (Particularly their song "Wasted" which doesn't sound like the title) and more. Listen to em :3.

I hate anything completely heavy metal or basically anything metal at all. Thats not music. When it's scratching guitar strings and screaming, it's not music. EDIT: Worded it badly..

I know I sounded really harsh here : [. Sorry.

Bring back real music :[.

I'm a fan of metal, but only when I enjoy the lyrics in most cases, or the instrumental work. I hate metal that is just constant screaming without understanding the lyrics at all, or that makes no sense at all.

I hate death metal, I love the album City of Evil more than any album I've ever known, yet I hate to death A7Xs previous albums before that, and their newest one. I guess they are one example of a band that changes their style over time.

I think the problem with the music industry at the moment (other people unfortunate enough to live in London might also have noticed this) is that loads of people are (illegally) downloading music making software like fruity loops and making all this samey amateurish dubstep and drum & bass music, and occaisionally if God has briefly nodded off or something they get credited for it.
Even worse are people who play Guitar Hero and Rock Band and think that they can therefore play guitar or their chosen fake instrument.

Something I just thought about which has a lot of truth with ME.

When a song makes me feel something, then it's music. Otherwise it's just noise.

Anyone else agree with that?

Of course it needs to "spark something" inside you. But the range of things some music can spark into is laaaarge.

Good music died with the 80s. The early 90s had some good musicians too, but currently, good music has gone underground, they are hidden. Only "profit-machines" are considered good music by the media and critics these days. Frankly, I quite like the idea that REAL music is now something you have to search for, it makes it all the more special.2009-04-20 12:47:00

For anyone having a go at specific music genres. The only reason you don't like it is because you haven't heard good examples of it. If you don't like metal then it's because you haven't heard good metal yet. Same for any other genre. There are only 2 kinds of music. Good and bad. The rest in marketing.

I'm surprised at how deluded some people are. The charts have and always will be polluted by rubbish someone wants to sell you to make a quick buck from. Ocassionally there is some great stuff but otherwise you have to look for it yourself.

You could start by looking in my sig.

Have you ever heard Iron Maiden? Have you ever heard The Sword? Have you ever heard Megadeth?

You'd be right if you were talking about modern metal bands, but saying that Randy Rhoads and Marty Friedman were just scratching their guitars and that Ozzy Osbourne and Bruce Dickinson were just screaming is a bit ridiculous.

Oh and I really do hate the screaming but for some reason I like Behemoth. But their lead singer doesn't really sing just speak really really low, which is cool! And not even Death Metal bands (Screamo is not metal, by the way. At least the way I see it, BMTH is screamo while a band like Sworn Enemy or Exodus is Metal. Screamo takes a lot more from Emo, but I kind of hate the idea of music genres in general, as most things can't even be classified. Iron Maiden and Metallica are the same thing? BULL ****!) just scratch guitars. While it may sound like it a lot of the time, a lot of bands put a lot of melodic sections in the song which go together so nicely with the mostly rhythm dominated genre.

Wait, nevermind. Forget what I said about the modern metal bands. Iron Maiden released their last album 2006, Megadeth like, 2005 or something, and The Sword (I originally put Wolfmother...I don't even know why) hasn't even been around that long.

The argument "where did good music go to" will stand for decades and centuries. Musical taste is completely relative. Whether you're a poppy Miley Cyrus fan (or any one of those girls), or a metal-head that appreciates every technicality of bands such as say, Dragon Force or something slightly more mellow like Rush, it's all based on opinion. In short, people will decide what is music for themselves, and if that particular thing sells in masses, then get ready to hear a lot of it.

You, my friend, have just lost coolness points. Not because you don't like metal, which is completely understandable, but because you're generalizing the genre. Oh well, like I said, all based solely on opinions.

Oh, I love it when people point out when something completely matters upon opinion.

I know you feel like you have to keep reminding us, Aero and others who love to point out the obvious, but you don't. We learned the difference between opinion and fact a long time ago, so you can stop telling us that something is based upon an opinion and stop telling us that we're wrong because we state an opinion like it's fact. As a matter of fact, if the words good, bad, sucks, idiot, or any other word like that is in a sentence, they ARE stating it like it's an opinion, as those are all opinion based words (unless of course they're in a sentence like this)

My main genre is rap and hip hop. Fortunately for me, there are many talented artists in this genre, not to mention it's the easiest genre of music to get into.

Jay Z, T.I., Lupe Fiasco, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Wu-Tang, etc.

There is tons of music out there, just search around in genres you like.

If you really are having a tough time finding new music, there are great internet radio sites like Pandora, that try to find you songs by other artists based ones that you like.

heres some

heres a few songs i put up on myspace a while back. never got back to adding anymore though.

i agree you have to look for good music, commercial music is just that commercial. Like on TV you got commercials and its video art, but has an intended purpuse and that is to sell something, so it never is great art. The best art never has any prepurpuse in it the artist more just lets it happen becuase that is what they love to do. So you hear a lot of music trying to fill a niche, as long as that is the motivation behind something it will never be great or remembered in the long term.

So.... I'm down to -1?

Anyway, I didn't really mean to generalize. I just didn't word it very well. WHEN It is just screaming and scratching a guitar, it's not music. I understand Metal is an... Acquired taste shall we say :3? And of COURSE it has it's good songs. Fixed that up?

I know I said I don't trust the top 50s and things, but Lilly Allen is so catchy. It's her darned UK accent that lures me in.
