Advice on making level icons

Archive: 13 posts

anyone got tips on how to make icons?

because the photos are always rectangular and the icons need to be square i find they always get distorted/stretched and seem to lose some of their colour as well
is there any way to work around this?

The display of the icons cut off the left and right side, so I usually stage a nice area in create mode with the background black and nice bright colors for the icon (so I get a nice contrast between the foreground and background) and then take a photo where the graphics are dead center and the left and right areas are black.

Take a look at the icons for many of my levels if you want to see what the result is.

You can also make a semi-big circle blue wood preferably as its one os the smoothest materials, paint/sticker it of whatever color you want, and put the picture you want as an icon, then go to front view and take a pic with the circle on the middle (top and bottom of the circle must touch top and bottom of picture rectangle) That yshould give you an icon apperar as you want it to.2009-04-13 19:12:00

i've tried drawing my image inside of a circle and taking a photo of that, but that just gives me a squished image inside of an oval for an icon2009-04-13 19:25:00

is there a way to change the shape of my photo without needing a ps eye?

or is there a separate way of choosing an icon for your level that cuts the edges from the photo instead of stretching it?

No and no. I don't think so anyways...

I usually take a large block of cardboard and make the icon on it. Then I switch to front view and take a picture of it, making sure there's a bit of space on the top and bottom (because the zipper on the patch will cover that up.)

I've had no problems with distortion, either that or it hasn't annoyed me that much. It really shouldn't matter, as long as it's simple and uses bright colors, as that will catch most people's attention.

mostly what people look at anyways is the first picture that pops up when you scroll over it. So make sure when you publish it, you upload a picture right away.2009-04-13 21:19:00

Actually what Silverleon was saying is the best way, cept I dunno if you got what he meant.

If you make an OVAL shape and draw your level name up, or design on this oval, then take a picture, it'll turn out as a circle when you apply it as your icon.

There are a few good Font levels, where you can get specially made lettering. So pick a suitable lettering, spell out the name of the level on your oval shape, then go to "Front View" then take your pic.

Try using a wide enough lettering cause it also gets squashed up. And try not to have too much detail in the icon pic, you won't be able to see it when its on the lbp earth.
Try having a big contrast between the background colour and the font colour so it stands out!

Hope that helps :S

Don't forget to adjust your lighting conditions when capturing photos for icons. Turn down the brightness in the global tool to avoid the washed out look.2009-04-13 21:39:00

Good point Jaeyden - I always adjust the lighting for the photo I use for my icons. It can make a huge difference.2009-04-14 01:56:00

Yup, exactly what I do. I actually turn down the brightness completely and then put a light source on the object to make it really shine and stand out.2009-04-14 02:14:00

Switch to front view from the start menu as well. That always helps make it look a little better IMO2009-04-15 09:58:00
