Running low on space :(

Archive: 6 posts

Hey everyone,

My newest level Shoot Em Up 2 is running REALLY low on thermometer space (you can check out number 1 here: http://tinyurl.com/d49lpt) Its on youtube, don't worry.

My problem with Shoot Em Up 2 is that I have about 8-9% thermometer left. I just need to create a boss, touch it up with a few final stickers and it should be complete. I am just hoping I have enough room for a boss - if not - i'll have to come up with an alternative. My question is:

Does dark matter + magnetic switches & keys (basically a VERY large structured switch system) take up a massive amount of thermometer space? I'm talking about 10 of these:

(This picture was taken way back in the early stages of development of Shoot Em Up 2.)

I'm not sure if all of this is causing my thermometer to rise. I have got a lot of complex objects & stickers. I guess i'll have to start building the boss and see if the thermometer pops.

Thermo is kind of an interesting thing..... there is actually more than 1 thermo, but only the one you've used the MOST of shows up.

Some of the thermos are:

Edges - these are the physical edges a shape takes, or the complexity of the shapes in your level. So, a circle takes a lot, and a triangle takes very little.

Separate objects - these are the objects (either sitting directly in the level or emitted) that are not glued to the floor or the level or dark matter, and therefore use the physics engine quite a bit.

Materials - this is the combined resources of different types of material.

So.... it all depends on WHICH thermo you are using the most of that will determine whether you can build your boss or not. Dark matter COULD take a lot of thermo depending on how many edges the dark matter has (size doesn't seem to be an issue). Magnetic keys and switches use very little thermo because they simply add logic.

The advice it gives you when you are low on thermo will help you determine which thermo you have used up (such as by telling you to "use less materials")

Well just to answer your question, if your planning on building 10 of those featured in the picture, your thermo wont be able to take it.

I could only assume that all those switches are linked to many moving parts of a Boss, thus, it makes your boss more complicated.

Im also estimating that the physical form of your boss will take alot of space. and for that alone i could easily estimate that you would be needing 20% thermo space.

I would suggest, taking out a few or more other things (such as creatures and complicated built materials) that take alot of space in youre level in order to be able to accomodate such a boss.

I would suggest playing my level in my sig and have a look at my 4 stage boss battle (that alone took 15 - 20% in thermo) and if you are planning on a more complicated boss than that, then that would definitely require more space.

My other suggestion would be to use to the corner editing tool and cut all those corners on all of your creations to make up for some space. That should help.2009-04-13 06:29:00

Thanks very much for the advice. I will try and remove those corners.2009-04-13 11:09:00
