Does anyone actually use gift items?

Archive: 26 posts

I noticed playing lbp that people love to give out items but does anyone actually use these? Personally I am annoyed when I have to go into my moon every couple of levels to delete thing because of the constant full profile message. I dont think ive ever seen someones work in a level that they didnt make and i would probably give them a lower rating than normal if i did. But I would like to know whether people actually use gift items in level creation.2009-04-11 05:03:00

Not really...
I use my objects only, i might use some good comunity objects as a reference, but that's it.
Keep in mind tho that little kids creators just love to put in theis levels any enemies/vehicles they find in other's levels.
But don't worry about this anymore, because as of next week which is when Cornish Yarg is presumed to be released, will come the ability to just not get/discard all of the unhearted community objecs!
So yeah, this shouldn't be an issue anymore.

Me neither, but I sometimes do use complicated switches other creators have made.2009-04-11 09:01:00

I think the profile size is the main reason why people don't send their creations to friends. As they know it will only mess their profiles up and it will have to be deleted.

It's good for sending level keys by capturing them as objects, but at the moment that's the main use for it.

Only thing I use are logic gates, saves me a lot of time measuring everything out and making sure it works.2009-04-11 11:23:00

Only community objects I use are the angle prox switches that FC ectracted from an MGS turret.
But we're getting that feature in create pack 1, so then I can delete them.

Only one I've used is a toggle switch because I had no idea how to make one...I make everything myself including logic gates and all that...just annoys me SO much when you get the message about a full profile so you go check out some items you could delete and all you get is a stupid little thumbnail picture and "some kind of object"...well thank you very much, now I know EXACTLY what that is...

No. Not unless it's something useful like a Logic Box switch. I like to put those as a prize since they're very useful, everything else that I give away at the end is just on request. It bugs the crap outa me when I have to keep deleting stuff like bronze trophies and worthless objects which have had absolutely no effort put into them. I just say thank God for the new update coming out next week.2009-04-11 12:22:00

Nope. I just prefer to make my own stuff in my levels.

I cant wait for CY. "Option to select whether to automatically collect community prizes and photos or not " FOR THE WIN.

God I hate those trophies. Why are they in so many levels?

logic gates, angle prox switches, toggle switch, logic Box switch... what are all these things you are talking about?

I delete everything I pick up right away since I don't have room for any items at all.

Logic gates are basically things that you can use to create a very basic AI. Say if you wanted two switches to be activated at the same time you'd link both of them to an AND gate and then the effect you wanted would only work when both were activated.

I use:

And's
Or's
Nor's
XOR's
State
Toggle
Timer
Permeanant
Turn Based

Turn based I don't use much but it's good for battleships.

I sympathise with you Green, I haven't got a clue how all those switches work or what they are even after doing all the tutorials.

By the way Shermzor, I didn't know that you could have turn based switches.
I was wondering about doing some sort of RPG type level along the lines of the battles in FF7 or Front Mission 3. Would that even be possible?

Narp, the only thing I've ever kept was the animated light from one of the survival challenges under "news".
I would only keep something if I either thought it was a work of genius, or if it was useable.
I only ever really gift things that other people would use, for this reason.. but still, even at that, people probably won't use them..

To the above comment:
The only switches you really need to know about are AND and Permanent switches
Which can both be seen in the early story levels. (see the level with the ghosts, that has a lot of them at the x2 bit, if you're interested )

Well Randofu set it up so it's an arrow and when you press a switch it changes who it points at (the difficult bit making sure that the person who isn't doing their turn can't change it).

So I suppose you could just add magnetic key switches to the arrow so when it points on way you can do XYZ but not when it points the other way.

These switches have been made by LBP users to make your time creating so much easier. My personal favourite is something called the Permanent Switch, which you can get if you play MonkeyButler's Silent Hill tribute level. This is basically a switch where two blocks (one holding a magnetic key, the other holding a magnetic key switch) are separated by a block of dissolve material. You basically connect any type of switch (usually a sensor switch or a two-way lever) to the dissolve material, and the magneic key switch to a piston, which is attached to a door, for instance. If you set the key to direction and activate the Permanent Switch via the original switch, the door will close/open permanently and it won't budge since there isn't a block separating out the magnetic key bond. Do note that these are user created (you can also have a go at making them yourself) and that the only tutorials that you'll be able to find are levels made specifically for a particular type of switch and how to use it, set it up, etc.

So did you get that? =P

I never keep anything to be honest, I remade the logic gates, smaller and more thermo freindly. The only one I have kept, and constantly use is Maraz_Matari's talking tool.

Most of the other stuff is fairly useless.

Hehe! After reading this thread i felt like a LBP noob all of a sudden. And then I played that level with the ships... furure war zone? or something like that and then I knew for sure I had only scratched the surface on this game. I have absolutely no idea how that is done.

Are there any particular levels that I can play to learn more about all this stuff?

I use gifts when it's appropriate. I also know that at least some people are using the gifts I'm handing out. The logic gates and my creature movement tool in my boss AI tutorial seem somewhat popular. The trick is to make gifts useful and not just put extras in your levels for padding.2009-04-14 02:42:00

I rarely use anything given to me as it tends to use up more thermometer.

Also, on my first level, I put in loads of prizes (I didn`t know any better ok! ) and then once I realised how irritating it was, and how crappy my prizes were, I took them out. But for some reason the game still told players that it was an available prize (I`m forgetting how). Anyway when i took it out i started getting complaints from people who wanted to win the UFO as a prize so I stuck it back in.

Maybe I`d get higher star ratings if I put crappy prizes all through my levels?

I've come intot he habit of offering only really "useful" items as my prizes, for instance in my mario level, i give a set of music notes with the piano notation on a staff stickered to them. it makes it super easy to transcribe music, or write your own.

however, unless it is something useful like that, i dont keep anything that is a community object.
