Bands you like that no one else cares about

Archive: 73 posts

Yeah, you know. Those ones that are super awesome but no one around you knows (or cares) about 'em.

While their a popular band, one of mine would have to be Iced Earth. You're probably wondering who they are. C wut I mean!

Oh and I started listening to that prog rock band Frost* after that LBP video. They're awesome.

And since no one at my school listens to any good music besides the songs they hear on Guitar Hero, I could put Megadeth and Coheed and Cambria on that list, too. But I won't. They're way too awesome.

One of my all time favorites is a band called "Lake" that NO ONE I've ever known has ever heard of. I believe they're from Germany (so some of you Europians may have heard of them).

When I was about 10 years old I got an album of theirs at a garage sale and wore it out (for those of you who are young.... albums existed before CDs.... which was before mp3s). The internet finally made it possible for me to find all of their CDs as imports.

It also became one of my wife's favorite bands, and one of their songs was our song at our wedding.

They existed from the mid 70's to early 80's and have some of the best sound quality and engineering I've ever heard from that time period.

There's stuff I listen to that many people don't know about. It's a shame because it's so good.

Like IAMX per example.

If it's not on Itunes then I probably haven't heard it. Personally not music crazy enough to look for obscure bands myself but I'll be watching to see if any that pop up have music I like, that said I do like most genres bar R+B.2009-04-11 12:17:00

Errr... well it all depends how you take it i suppose. If you mean my close friends... then there's only one mate who may have a chance of hearing most of the more obscure bands i listen to. However, go onto the internet music forums and you'll find tons of other people who like similar stuff xD I suppose Blonde Redhead, Burial and a few others i love would fall into this category. I'm interested though... for you USA'ers, are Deerhunter well known over there? Everyone on the internet seems to love them, but i don't know anyone else bar me that likes them in person.

Also... i suppose Sigur Ros could fall into the category of having a song everyone has heard but noone knows who it was or anything xD (that song is hoppipolla). This applies to UK people really cause it's been used on adverts.

Milltown Brothers, my uncles old bands. They got signed to EMI and released an album that got in the charts and a few singles, but the highest they got in the charts was maybe 25th, so they faded away =[ but yeah, bet ya haven't heard of 'em!2009-04-11 19:25:00

Drown Radio is a good nerdcore band. Well, it's not really a band since it's one person, but still. The Atomic Brothers did an album with Drown Radio, which I enjoyed as well.

Tony Bacala made some fun Transformers music that I enjoy.

Jonathan Coulton is one that a lot of people in the gaming group know about. Sadly, none of my friends know of him.

Landon Pigg is pretty good, and none of my friends knew of him until just recently when my brother put it on a mixtape.

And I'll throw in Stephen and the Colberts for good measure.

I think she was a teenager when she was in the Sugarcubes, she sounds so young! They're definitely worth checking out, even though I don't think they come close to her solo work. Their best album imo is Life's Too Good, you should really check it out

And just so we're not getting too off topic, I'll add the B-52s. So underappreciated...

Nice to see Sigur Ros and Bjork getting mentioned. I saw Sigur Ros the first time they came to the UK at All Tomorrow's Parties festival nearly 10 years ago. They were playing with Mogwai and Godspeed! You Black Emporer. Amazing weekend. Anyone into Sigur Ros should check out Mogwai and Godspeed if you've not heard of them before. Sigur Ros seem to have managed to break the mainstream more recently.

If you're a huge Bjork fan you should also try and seek out her very first album she made when she was just a kid. It was pre-Sugarcubes and what made her a star in Iceland. Obviously nothing like her current music but fascinating none the less.

Mum and Bang Gang are another great Icelandic band worth checking out. Mum sound fairly simillar to Bjork and Sigur Ros.

Anyway bands I love that no one cares about... Four Tet, Beirut, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Secret Mommy, Prefuse 73.

Sugarcubes are pretty class, but definitely prefer Bjorks solo stuff.

Homogenic and Vespertine are my favourite, but I wasn't too impressed by volta and medulla.

As Sosaku said, M?m and Mogwai are awesome. He also introduced me to Prefuse 73, you don't even have to like hiphop to love his music.

One of my favourite bands is Honey is Cool. They seem to still have a tiny cult following and their albums are almost impossible to get hold of. They're a Swedish alternative rock band, not together anymore, but the lead singer (Karin Dreijer) is in The Knife (some of my favourite electronic music). She has a very strong accent and sings almost like a child. So people who listen to Bjork and M?m might be interested

Surprising to see that Icelandic Bands seem to be somewhat dominating the list here... Some other cool bands we sport from over here include 'Quarashi' and 'HAM'.

For something more obscure, I really enjoy Lodger, the Finnish indie rock band (Not to be confused with the UK group), and the Russian group Theodor Bas.t.ard.

Thanks for the suggestions Morrinn.

I think its because the Icelandic music scene is so diverse. Their music is completely different to any other popular music around the world, it seems to stray from the trend. M?m said so themselves.

But they all seem related, they all seem to have a fascination in childhood memories, especially M?m and Bjork.

Two of my favourite british bands from the 70's and 80's :

FM ( recommended album : 'Only The Strong' )
Magnum ( recommended album : 'On A Storyteller's Night' which also has brilliant artwork on the cover )

A great japanese band from around the same time :

VOW WOW ( V is a terrific album of their's which I have been trying to get hold of for years but was out of production. It was re-released recently on CD. I made sure I snapped it up asap and was not disappointed, well worth the wait )

Yeah! I used to listen to them when I was a bit younger, I think they are popular, but only amongst niche groups.
Other bands I love, which very few people have heard of are:

The Young Blood Brass Band, absolutely awesome! Inspirational musical talent!

Slash's Snake Pit, a side project by the amazing Slash from the original Guns 'n Roses (you can't call yourself a Slash fan if you haven't heard of Slash's Snake Pit .

Joe Satriani, awesome solo guitarist! Brilliant skill and musical talent!

Dire Straits, probably more popular than I expect, they're more known for their song "sultans of swing", but the rest of their full albums are really cool.

Alcatrazz, very ACDC like sound, very neo-classic guitar riffs with lead guitarist Ingwie Malsteen.

Bachman Turner Overdrive, they are the artists behind "you aint seen nothing yet!", long before my time, but their music is brilliant

Thing is... this thread is about posting your favourite bands that no one else cares about... seems to sum up the fact that most people haven't even heard of the bands being mentioned here ^^ Let alone liking the music... Its cool though that everyone has their own particular favourites, instead of sticking to the top chart music out there

Its nice when people understand music enough to have an opinion rather than listening to what everyone else is listening to.

Songs Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co, Timesbold, Whip, 16 Horsepower, Woven Hand, Black Heart Procession, Rasputina, Castanets, Bonnie Prince Billy, Smog, Cat Power, Neko Case, Beach House, CocoRosie, Comets On Fire, Crystal Antlers, Queen Adreena, Ruby Throat, Grant Lee Buffalo, Mazzy Star, Sparklehorse, Grandaddy, Modest Mouse, DeVotchka, Cardiacs, Pavement, The Ink Spots, Natacha Atlas, Azam Ali, Niyaz, Gutter Twins, Miranda Sex Garden, Arcade Fire, Grails, Godspeed You Black Emperor, The Bug, Alela Diane, Power of Dreams, The God Machine, Sophia, Isis, Marissa Nadler, Throwing Muses, Balkan Beat Box, Madrugada, Calexico, Loudon Wainwright III.

a-ha. My eyes opened up for all their music, new and old after their 2005 concert here in Norway.

A-ha were hugely popular in the 80's, and despite my love of obscure indie I'm not ashamed to say that they remain one of my favourite bands of all time.

You should check out Grails, Explosions In The Sky and Thee Silver Mount Zion if you're looking for something in a similar vein to GY!BE. You should also try Isis if you haven't already. If you don't mind growly vocals, they really are true masters of the soaring emotional riff.

Jewelled Antler was basically a sort of collective/label of musicians who recorded super lo-fi music (Often in caves, forests etc.) and released it themselves on CDR. It often seems to get labelled as "drone-folk". But it's probably hard to find so if you have trouble just let me know and I could up some tracks for you to download.

I'm not huge on Isis but love Explosions, Mount Zion etc. I used to buy everything that came out on Constellation records. Are you familliar with Slint? They're often considered the grandaddy's of post-rock. Spiderland is a classic album released way back in 1991. Discovered by Steve Albini no less.

I actually got a chance to talk to Efraim from GY!BE for a college thesis I actually wrote on them. Interesting people.

^ Wow! I just searched for the Jewelled Antler collective. Only one CD available on Amazon and it's a steep price of ?50 (I'm in the UK). Also listened to Hala Sterna on Youtube and was highly impressed, but then I searched to buy his eponymous debut album online...

?160!!!

I'm sorry, but that's just absurd!

As for Slint, yeah I've already got the Spiderland album. Also keen on D.Pajo's solo projects, Papa M, Aerial M, etc.
