Lollipops and Termination Obstacle Course

Archive: 4 posts

Level Name: Lollipops and Termination Obstacle Course
PSN: Agent-Bingo
Location: Canada
Icon: Mushroom

Decription: A fun obstacle course requiring determination and a little patience. Some parts can be tricky. Transverse valleys of fire, snowy mountains and roaming green hills. Bounce on trampolines up to the valley of fire where you must jump across poles towards the explosive bridge. After that you must take a leap of faith onto the fire platform then climb the hill and beware the Munchers. The snowy mountains are next; be sure to watch out for the icicles they're pointy. Finally walk the home strech to get to the end.

General comments:
disclaimer on the front should stop people trying the level if they don't want a challenge / don't have any skills and it's really sad that when I got there it was 2* and the only tag was "frustrating". I gave 4* and tagged "rewarding" (I think). It's a tricky level but far from impossible, and everytime I died it was my fault, none of it was down to bad level design. Plus points are custom characters, which are always nice, and making it a race - perfect for this sort of level. It's let down a little by simple visuals, but the fact that I was trying to race and concentrating on not dying make this more acceptable.

Thoughts on specific sections:

On the balance posts I found the first one to be harder than the ones that just go upwards. This sort of section takes me a couple of goes to get into and I died first run through. After I restarted I did alright on them. I think you might want to swap the first one with an easier / shorter one, to ease players in. Poss put a double life gate on the first (leave the others as single)

The leap of faith section and the exploding bridge seemed a little out of place in a skills-based level

With the creatures that eat you, I couldn't get through the mouths of the second ones. My tactic was to run and jump into the mouth of the 1st, fall out the other side, jump backwards into the mouth of the first and onto the head of the second, then skip the third. I don't think this was your intention...

On the ice section where you have to climb, I can't see the top sections. I don't know if this was intentional, but making me jump an unknown distance to an unknown platform annoys me every time.

Points: most of the points are just lines in between the obstacles. I'm working on an obstacle based level ATM and worked it so if you ace a particular section really fast, you can bet like a 12x combo. If you have to make a second attempt then you lose race points and combo points. Don't know if thats an idea you could use?

Hope this helps.

ok - checked it out and you're right it is challenging. The platforming skills pretty much consist of jumping of various forms though. Not a lot of strategy required. The mouth critters is more timing based and they are a challenge but it wasn't really exciting. (Just my opinion - not trying to be harsh) It's not impossible or terribly frustrating imo but some of the sections get a little repetitive.

The spring loaded platform section was interesting, albeit a bit repetitive too. I think the first of the springboards is the most difficult too. Seemed odd that the first one would be so difficult to get onto then the rest were much easier.

I did like the exploding bridge section - very dynamic but sort of out of place for the rest of the level design.

The look of the level is pretty straightforward, which is a pitty since when you drop in the level you have some interesting shapes and materials (green glass looked cool) then the rest of the level has very minimal decoration or visual interest. I'm sort of a sucker for eye candy and there just wasn't a whole lot to keep my eyes happy while avoiding nasty ways to die. The lighting was pretty simple too. Not too dramatic but effective enough to see what I needed to do.

Overall I'd say your level would be popular with people inclined to medium to hard level, platforming/skill play, and folks not too hung up on how a level looks.

I gave it three stars and tagged it perilous. It's a nice level though - thanks for sharing it!
