problems sticking to one idea

Archive: 22 posts

i've always had a problem finishing levels in LBP. i'll come up with an idea that i think people will enjoy, get half way through and take a short break, and the next day i'll get bored of it and come up with another idea

i've had the same problem when making games in flash as well, i usually give up and decide it was a rubbish idea to begin with before i'd even finished the basic coding

anyone got tips on sticking to one idea and finishing it?
it's becoming really frustrating for me

It would probably help you to plan out your level as much as possible before even beginning to make it.

If you plan is well fleshed out, it might be fun to actually make the whole thing and stick to it.

When you have an idea that doesn't fit but is exciting to you, plan other levels ahead. I already have my 2 next levels in planing because I thought of some ideas while making my previous ones.

Yeah that's also what i do. I always have two more ideas in mind while i'm working out the next passage for my recent level. Don't cancel your first idea because you got a new one. While you are working on you current level you can improve your new idea. Sometimes i figure out improvements for my ideas. If i had already started to make this level i had to start over again or chancel it completely. So the best thing to keep in mind is that you can always improve your ideas and that the best time for it is while you complete your last one 2009-04-10 15:28:00

Sometimes it's best to, if you think of a diferent idea, make a completely new level for it (just in case you get inspiration for something new, like mentioned above).
What I try to do when I make a level is be open to change the entire story at any time. I would think first about the type of level it will be (e.g. dark, mysterious, modern, colourful etc.) and I change the level lighting, fog, colour correction and stuff so I can tell what sort of things to include. If I had changed it to a dark, foggy level then I would know to include something like ghosts, skeletons or zombies. If I made it colourful then I would probably include strange characters like in the first levels. (Depends on whether your level is based on a new sort of gameplay- probably wouldn't require any story)
Sometimes if you have a story already thought out then it can be difficult to base the gameplay around it and make it consistantly fun for the player. If you ever fully run out of ideas for the story or gameplay then include some novelty thing like a bridge/ platform breaking (by using dissolve between objects), some explosions or even a basic puzzle. If you definitly need to change the story half way through then it's easier to do it instantly in a cut-scene, the other way to do it would be to drop in minor hints throughout the level (signposts or messages written on the wall- if you want to change somethig into a horror then make the lights go out for a few seconds/ flicker)
So really, the original idea for the story must include fun for the player- think about what you like in playing in LBP levels/ even in flash games and base it around that. You'll find it much harder to fit genuinely good gameplay around the story.

I always put my concepts on paper. This way I it keeps me on task.

I even physically draw out how I want parts to look - like enemies and such...

I find it way easier to keep on task this way. Otherwise, as soon as I hit a bump, I don't keep going.

A wise Chumbawamba once told me......

We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
******* the night away
******* the night away
He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times:
"Oh Danny Boy
Danny Boy
Danny Boy..."
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
******* the night away
******* the night away
He drinks a whisky drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him
Of the better times:
"Don't cry for me
Next door neighbour..."
I get knocked down
But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
We'll be singing
When we're winning
We'll be singing ....

Its actually kinda work on multiple levels at the same time as one idea that doesn't fit in one may be perfect for anoyther.
Just don't work on too many levels at the same time as it may be overwhelming seeing that you've started 30 levels and since you've started them you feel the need to finish them...
MAybe 2-4 levels at a time is the best range of levels.

I sketch out general concepts, character design, materials lists, and possible challenges on paper when I'm at work, or playing pub trivia. Never know when you'll have an epiphany! I also will work 2 levels at a time. When one gets overwhelming I move onto the second one. Helps prevent that burnt out feeling where you just don't even want to look at a level anymore much less finish it.2009-04-10 19:07:00

I have the excact same problem.
One thing I find helps is showing people what you're making.
If they give good feedback, you'll trust yourself that the level will go well.
If they give bad feedback, you'll want to improve.
In both situations you'll have motivation to keep going.

urgh, this is another reason i never finish anything

second night in a row now that i've started a promising level and then lost it

first time i must of spent 2 hours making something that i thought was awesome, and then i accidentally click "discard all changes"

this time i spend ages trying to make something similar, and my ps3 crashes.. and this is the first time it's ever crashed on me

Thats a good tip...for some poeple
I tried making my first level and i have to tell you it was bollox
Anyway i wanted to show vani(his real psn is vanimeria or somin like that but i never remember it)and he told me the truth which was it was bad and i couldnt really blame him
But he put me on the right trackby telling me some tips and getting me to start another one. This second one is a great success and is half way done. Although im stuck cause i picked the whole scenery up by accident and didnt realise so i couldnt rewind and then when i went in the level again the stairs had snapped in half the car was at the bottom of the hill and all the jumping platforms were in the fire
As for the question in hand you have to think about being one of those poeple holding the platinum trophy in your hands and rubbing it in your friends faces!!!Also think about all the hearts you will get and try to remember all those poeple with the levels with so much detail its as if it was real. So believe that you can make it right to the top if you start of small so push yourself to the limit to become the ultimate LBP level creater.
This is probably the longest post in the forum AND it is all complete BOGUS and probably wont help but it might do

I have no advice to give you whatever......as I do exactly the same thing lol

I get excited about a new idea and tell myself I'm just gonna quickly try the concept out. But then I get carried away and leave the old one.

I have soooo many levels unfinished

trophies don't really give me much motivation ^^

i've always wanted to try teaming up with someone though. it'd be a bit experimental for me, but it sounds like fun

If u mean teaming up to make a level then that would help alot cause atleast i maybe even you cant not feel guilty of stopping someones dream of making a dream level by you getting bored. Although this patch comes out (or is predicted to come out) next week.
