Let me know what you think!

Hey CCubbage, I played through, and though it's not locked anymore, (neither is mine, its rough getting feedback on these golf levels...)

Here are the things I really liked-

Flags up/down. this gave it a cool whackamole feel which added a bit of challenge to the timing, and kept the fun up.

the power meter! really really cool, it brought me back to the old days of games like magic darts and old school golfers.

the points! i like how they are all spread out, making it a bit more challenging to be able to chain them together.

some things that i think would make this level even cooler-

a way to select which kind of golfer you want, even if it only changes how he looks would be cool.

a random event where your ball can get snatched up or caught on something in the air, which gives you bonus points. a bird stealing it, or a cloud would be super cool.

I see you have a beaver there, maybe have him be pressing the buttons to make the flags roll over or whatnot.

anyway, i had a lot of fun, and i played it about 9 times trying to get the high score... but i'm pretty terrible at timing. great job! easily one of the most fun driving range levels out there right now.

if you could, could you give me a little feedback on my golf level? LBPGolfNA-Par 5.

I played this yesterday (do I still have the highscore?).
I really like it. One of the best (if not the best driving ranges I've seen). I played your Tiger Woods Mini Golf level loads, I really like the power system you came up with. I also like how you can't just build up to full power and get loads of points like a lot of the driving ranges out there, becasue of the rotating flags. It adds and element of timing into the level, which although is not present when you are actually on a driving range, means there is some skill involved to get the highscore (I should know, I got it xD). It's also good how if you leave the points to build up over all 10 shots (although it's impossible to avoid them all) and then grab them, all at the end you can get a nice multiplier. I also like how if you wait till the power meter is full, you hit the ball too far. This kinda remind me of the overheating thing when boosting on Motorstorm.
It looks great too. 5/5. 'Brilliant' tag & heated.

Don't bother giving me feedback, I know you think my level is the best out there xD

d'Oh! 49DRA... Did you beat my high score!? I had it when I left it yesterday. I played this several times Ccubbage... It's addicting! I want to go play it again right now (if only to beat 49DRA's score ). Very well done.

I like TJapan's suggestions though - the occasional fly-by (especially if it helps rather than hinders) would be cool.

And I too like how the point bubbles spread out. At first I thought you should collect them as you do in your Tiger Woods level, but then I realized that because some of them will roll into the player, it will make it virtually impossible to know what the MAX score is. Even if you hit the big points on all 10 shots, you might pop a few more (or less) than the next guy before you get a chance to chain them. Of course it's entirely possible that I've spent waaay too much time thinking about this.

EDIT: I also require no F4F at this time. Thanks, and GOOD LUCK!

Wow, guys! Thanks! I thought this golf level was lost in the showcase jungle.

a way to select which kind of golfer you want, even if it only changes how he looks would be cool.

I totally agree. If I do another full Tiger Woods Mini Golf level I may do this - it would be good to select your favorite golf player just like in the REAL Tiger Woods Golf! The entire mechanics are completely self contained in a single object, so it probably wouldn't be too hard to emit the golfer.

a random event where your ball can get snatched up or caught on something in the air, which gives you bonus points. a bird stealing it, or a cloud would be super cool.

I had thought about this a bit, but I honestly am a little confused as to what they are REALLY looking for. Hot Shots Golf is kind of a straight-up golf game without a lot of funkiness that isn't background, and I figured if they were looking to build a real golf level out of the results I would keep it simple.... but... maybe...

I see you have a beaver there, maybe have him be pressing the buttons to make the flags roll over or whatnot.

This is ACTUALLY my pet Prairie Dog that I had for a long time, and died a few years ago. I wanted to put her in the level. Unfortunately, before she died I never got a chance to take a button-pressing pose of her just in case I eventually decided to put her in a golf level contest. Man it's hard to think ahead sometimes.

Thanks everyone else for playing! I just hope MM likes it! But there are soooo many different great golf games out there I'm not getting my hopes up. But, I kind of feel like I already had my cake with the success of Tiger Woods Mini Golf, so I will be totally happy seeing as many members on this site win as possible. I've put hearts on 3 golf levels already.

TJapan - I'm gonna check out yours right now.

This level has a great concept. It maintains a fun, mini-game feel and has great replayability value. The scoring system is very cool and the golfing mechanic is simple and effective.

The one thing that felt wrong about the level was the range. It's meant to be a driving range but the level is so small that it feels like a putting range. If you expanded it more using the same mechanic I think you could make it a lot better but you probably have too many plays and too little time to do that at this stage.

Good luck in the competition.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm gonna let it fly and see what happens. I've had a bit of a problem with the concept because a) I think I have one of the most "fun" golf mechanics out there, however doing really long course doesn't keep the arcade feel that I've been looking for and b) doing just a single hole didn't sit well with me because it doesn't work well with my mechanic. With me it's ALL about the gameplay, not necessarily about realism.

We'll see what the judges think. I'm interested to see how this thing turns out because it sounds like they're planning on turning all this into a real golf level, and a lot of the submissions don't seem to take into account the play mechanics, doing a true golf level, the thermo it takes to put all of it together OR having a good addictive play quality that can be duplicated among the entire level.

Just an idea that crossed my mind...

I ever you make a full level with this idea anyways, you could have many freely selectable holes to play. Just make some intro/navigation chamber like my room at the beginning of Sack's In The City. You know, some room where I select wich hole I want to play. The whole room being some huge elevator could bring me to the hole I selected.

Just played this level, and I think it's great. The elemet of timing really adds aot to it. I'm at #6 on the high scores right now. I may try for higher later haha.

Good job!

Thanks man! I don't know whether you ever got a chance to play my Tiger Woods Mini Golf, but it's the same concept but it's a full level.

I actually haven't taken this level too seriously. I built it as a single, simple area just to enter the contest because of my interpretation of the rules (which are probably wrong...). I figured if they're planning on building a 9 hole course with a driving range and a clubhouse.... they are probably not looking for a huge, thermo-eating level. But on the other hand, it's hurting the popularity of the level since I think people are RATING it as if it's supposed to be a full level.

Funny thing is, the tags are FANTASTIC - the best I've ever had. But the rating is 3 stars... which is the worst I've ever had.

But then again.... I've seen some FANTASTIC golf levels out there, so if I lose - I'm TOTALLY cool with it!

Just played this and it good fun. I like the added skill need to get the whole thats open for scoring. And it's pretty sweet when you nail the 300 just as it's closing.
I'm going to try your tigger woods one now, on the strength of this level.
5* hearted

edit - Just tried you Tiger woods level brilliant. Although I don't think you should be told exactly where on the meter to stop it for each scoring zone. Hence favourte hole was last one. Also tried Splat Invaders, amazing. hearted you as author. Nice one.

Yeah, I KIND of agree with you on the Tiger Woods strategy guide thingies - but I was watching the comments and ratings pretty carefully on that one and came to the conclusion that without the guide, players were getting a bit frustrated and giving up on the possibility of getting a high score - so I added it in. When I did that, the plays and hearts started going through the roof and players were suddenly trying to compete for the high scores.

So, even though I hated to do it, adding the little strategy guides was clearly the right decision. I figure the challenge is in getting the correct impact and timing.

Fair enough i understand. I might create a level when the player does nothing and wins. I bet it would be a 5 star blockbuster level. 2009-04-18 13:32:00
