Advanced and Basic Create Mode's.

Archive: 11 posts

I have been meaning to make a thread about this for a while now, and I'm wouldn't be surprised if you have thought about this.

When I first got my copy of Little Big Planet and started up Create Mode I was overwhelmed by the amount of tools there were. I mean the tutorials definitely helped me to understand what they did, but trying to learn all these new things at once was quite off-putting. Me and my friends experienced the same problems and I'm sure some of you did.

So this is my idea:
For the sake of seven year old's, how about advanced and basic versions of create mode? Basic create mode will have most things and all materials, all joining objects like: pistons, string, elastic etc... But will leave out things like magnetic key switches and the corner editing tool.

Also when future patches, create packs, level packs... come out, there will be even more tools to add to the confusion. So they will be put into the advanced create mode.

What do you think?

I don't know. What's the point? I'm kinda sick of people uploading their first levels with no background and just a bunch of swings and fire. There's really no problem with the tutorials.2009-04-09 23:34:00

Well, the game is for people to have fun creating a level right? And there are a lot of kids playing the game that can't create a level because it's too confusing. This is a way to break it down even more. Think of the children!2009-04-09 23:45:00

i think this is a pretty good idea

not that it's a problem that affects me, but i think it'd be nice for the kids out there who just want to mess about without feeling overwhelmed by all the materials and tools

I think that there's stuff the game can "assume" you want to do but at the same time it can't do everything for you.

Also, kids are intelligent. Do you think they aren't overwhelmed when they open Windows? Aren't they overwhelmed just using the internet? Yet they continue and most important of it all: they learn.

The game is already set up super simple with a very "visual" approach. If people can't have the patience or the will to learn or develop their analysis / studying abilities I think it's bad for them alone and we shouldn't cater to that as a society. We already provide something simple now people need to devellop their intelligence. LBP would be the first game I give my kids. It would SO TOTALLY help them devellop their mental processes + opening up their creativity.

LBP would be easier if the tutorials wouldn't just cover the basic use of the tools. There could be more tutorials to teach the player how he can combine the tools and show off some little tricks. E.g. some stategies for glueing stuff together. I always had problems with glueing things as do most creators.

For the Advanced mode. I think there should be a mode for experts who are able to mess around with scripts or something. Or just something to hide a layer to see what is behind it and etc. MM has it's own home editor which probably does that, so why shouldn't we also able to do that?

It's better that the tutorials only show off the basics

i think the more advanced uses and tricks are meant to be a bit of a discovery for the player

Remember that some things cannot be learned from tutorials, besides, what's the point of doing that, i mean seriously, do you really think they actually see the normal tutorials?
I doubt so, even some older players don't play through the tutorials, so it waould be kinda pointless as most if not all of them will just ignore them, don't you think?

I have a couple of points;

I'm not sure the developers knew how people would exploit cerrain tools and make some of the amazing creations they have.

after playing through story mode (which is essentially an advanced tutorial) I saw some of the possibilities.

If you cant develop simple logic controls or timers on your own a tutorial probably wont help because you will always present yourself with new problems and without the analytical skills to break the problem down into parts and solve it using yes/no on/off 0/1
you will still be stuck with no idea what to do.

I have made some tutorials on youtube with step by step instructions and i get comments like "I have made the wheels but whats a motor bolt?" If your to lazy to do the tool bag tutorials or you are to thick to understand them then dont bother atempting the advanced things.

Anyway i think the editor mode is more than simple enough if you dont know what it is dont use it. but there is no excuse cause the in game tutorials explain everything.

The narrated tutorials by Mr Stephen Fry are so easy to understand and if you listen to the wording , its not serious, it's kinda dumbed down so the younger generation can play it.. I mean,, im thick and i produced a good level.2009-04-11 17:07:00

I like this idea. It's practical, and it wont take anything away from the game. It's not really the tutorials that need to be simplified to make a "basic" or "kiddy" mode, they are simple enough. And yes, simple enough for kids to understand. To make a "basic mode", It's not about "dumbing down" the whole game either, like some might think. I think it's more about providing a simplified version of the tools and a limited access to the more complicated options. When seeing all of those options, it's very easy to be overwhelmed and put it off altogether, even I was a bit overwhelmed the first time, and I'm relatively smart 2009-04-14 14:06:00
