The LBPC of Old (Warning: Random thoughts inside)

Archive: 64 posts

Well... I've been thinking about making this topic for a while. Please note, this is not a goodbye thread, or a thread wishing the old days were here again... though I do, but yeah. Mostly it's just random thoughts that have been bugging me for a while.

Well, this site was originally founded in June 2007, a bit after LBP was revealed. Yes, this site is that old.

However, it really only started to give pick up in July of 2008. During this month, ConfusedCartman registered.

Here's a bit of food for thought: This site is almost 2 years old. lbp, the founder, is member number 1 (obviously). ConfusedCartman, who registered 13 months later, is member number 118.

That means that during the span of 13 months, this site had only a little over 100 people registered. CC registered in late July and is member 118. I registered in late august and am member 323. That means that, in a month, this site got 3 times as many members as it did in 13 months.

Now, what happened? Well, basically, CC happened. He came, and played and wrote a summary of LBP when he registered. This was featured on kotaku, and, well, people started poring in. In the span of three weeks, CC went from a new user to a full blown admin.

Now, look at us now: over 4000 users. Basically, one can pretty much attribute this to CC, who I've always felt is either a genius... cause he's 17 and is running the biggest lbp site pretty much by himself.

Anyway, this is not a history lesson on LBPC; rather, it is me pondering what happened at LBPC.

When I registered here in late August, this place was really only starting to grow, so i managed to fit right in. Over the months that followed, I experienced pitfall and rise- My Emo Age, the Marino episode(s), my war with Stix, the hunt for the blubber of the legendary whaaaaaaaaaaaaale- but all that is really gone.

I mean, what happened?

Pretty much all of my old friends here have left... many awesome ideas during the buildup to LBP (the cavern, the resort, the zones, "Stix-Vision") have never come to pass, and many of them have left.

My best answer to this is thus: Many just... didn't like LBP :/

In fact, I know that to be the case with many. They just didn't like LBP, so, one by one, they started trickling away. Too be honest, right now the only two old guys from before LBP left are probably me and whaaaaale for the most part... and I'm not as active as I once was.

So, yeah. LBPC has changed. now, I'm not saying that's bad- they didn't like LBP, and so people who do like LBP would come... And so they did. Of course, the old comers and the new comers were at war, and at first I thought that the newcomers who registered at multiple LBP sites to show off their levels were "abusing" the site... Then, one day it hit me.

We were, in a way, all cuddled up in our spam can...

... Ok, I know i'm rambling, and to be honest I'm getting tired of typing. However, I think you catch my drift... LBPC has changed over the past few months, and... well, I DO miss the one community . However, while the new one is awesome as well... well, nothing will ever recreate the old LBPC really.

... So there ya have it. My collection of random thoughts about the state of LBPC. Do with it as you please, I just felt I should put this all down somewhere. That said, LBPC is STILL really awesome, and one of the best places on the internet- but a guy can feel nostalgic =_=.

So yeah, this collection of thoughts is now finally finished. Whew!

I wasn't heare at the beginning, but I became a member of this community shortly after the game released. I think what you are experiencing is simply due to the fact that LBP has been out for a while now, people have played it to death, and maybe they have decided to take a break.

I know that for me, I'm at a point in my life where I can't devote the time needed to make levels like I did a few months ago. I'm searching for a new job, doing freelance work, and I'm married, so I want to make time for my wife as well. Because of this, I had to push LBP to the side, which is much easier to do now, since I have played it ALOT.

That said, I still think their are a lot of great members who are constantly putting out great levels and making great posts throughout the forums. The latest Episode Spotlight is evidence of that.

I stopped playing LBP a bit, due boredom, and I constantly switch games to play now.
it actually stops boredom.
a bit of LBP, a bit of killzone 2, a bit of motorstorm etc....
But I agree on your post

I was here for the before time in the long long ago. That was, for like 3 days. Then everyone left. And I don't really care 'cause ONE: most of them still come here now and then and TWO: LBP is super duper awesome and we have a great community here. None of those "Ramp" people. Good creators.

I go through times when I stop playing LBP and play other games, but LBP isn't a commitment, it's a game for crying out loud. I think a lot of people were either turned off by the amount of time it takes to make a good level, their levels not being noticed, or they just got bored of the game. I can find tons of good levels without problem, though, because this place has a LEVEL SHOWCASE, but whatever.

It's weird that Code left, though, because he made some awesome levels. I think that those people who left originally will come back and stay for a bit, then leave again. After taking a good long break from LBP, they might be pulled back again. Just my thoughts.

Like I've said, members come and go. Forums change. That's how the internet, home of all serious business, is. I for one have taken it easy on LBP these past few months. I want to play my other games and do other things besides invest 4-5 hours a day on a level, but that doesn't mean I won't get back into it again. I eventually will, but for now, I rather chillax. LBPC will continue to grow and improve. Awesome things are comin'!2009-04-08 21:53:00

I remember when I joined. It was soon after you Rock, I followed a link form the old LBP news site. I started an introduction thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=1800) and was convinced to stay by the overwhelming friendliness of you all. You even have a post in there Rock.

I browsed around the site and was struck by all of big and flashy multicoloured names. The beta forum was soon created, where I browsed through many nights losing my sanity until I finally got a code.

After the beta I waited for the release of the game. I was so annoyed when it was delayed and was further irritated when donkey show posted that he already had the game and had already created the iconic Azure Place.

When I finally got the game I was well settled into the site. It replaced GameTrailers as my most posted on forum and has stayed that way until today. That's my LBPC story.

I was here when LBP was still active and I'm still here now.
I agree that it sucks the old LBPC community died I mean back in august and September this was an amazing forum. in October and November it was still brilliant but starting to go downhill. From January onwards it went into freefall. It really sucks
but what can you do?

And no offence to all the new members. It's not there fault just people leaving and other stuff.

I joined these forums about a month and a bit ago when it got mentioned on MM's blog. I wasn't that active at first but then I got really, really into LBP. Now I find myself visiting this place everyday! Though my activity has dropped down to 70% now

I really wish that I was here to be part of the older community, it sounds awesome. At that time I was super hyped about LBP, I don't know why I didn't think to look for any forums dedicated to it. Ah well, I'm here now.

Well, I wouldn't say the new community "sucks". I think it's great :0

It's just that it's different.

Also, another thing that occurred to me: The old community was composed primarily of teenagers and a few twentysomethings. The only two older were Quozl and dorien, and I always called dorien an old man cause he was 30 :/

So yeah, age differences play a factor. Or something. It certainly may be attributed to the fact that LBP may require a "fully developed" sense of patience, but yeah.

Um... I unno, this just has been bothering me. It just never occurred to me back then that everyone would leave .

Rock i joined a little before you with Cartman and i have loved this site, it's a cult following for me, you guys rather old members or new are somewhat like a family to me i think it's cool that i can come here and talk to people that understand what i'm talking about. I really loved LBP but i wasn't good at it which, well... it made me mad and made me want to stop playing at all i have many, MANY ideas sketched out that i would love to make a reality, but i can't seem to do it, do i miss the old times? Yes and no at the same time. No because the moving forward of time brings upon change, but this website was a lot closer before. IMO. Now i am very active on this site, although my tracker may not show it i check the threads maybe 4-5 times a day if i feel like it, these forums are awesome, LBP, Cartman, and the rest of the Admins(Sorry i didn't name you all individually) have done amazing things! I want to thank you guys for what you have done, but also i agree with you Rock. Remember when Flash was UKs-Finest-Hero or littlebigmidget or even Maltay and Marino. Good times had here and i would like to thank everyone, but in a way i agree with you Rock and don't worry i'll stay no matter what2009-04-08 22:40:00

I didn't mean the new community sucks but that it sucks the old one is dead and I don't really have a place in the new one except sitting around being nogstalgic and wishing the people who left were back

There was loads of cool members Id name them but I'd go on all day then and this would turn into a big wall of text.

Lol you guys are emo.

I seem to remember a lot of drama in the "Old LBPC". Maybe they all left because Marino was banned and they no longer had a chance to have some interesting fight.

Emo and nogstalgic are different things.
And there wasn't too much drama and anway the community was so great it more than made up for the odd bit of drama.

I appreciate the accolades but I assure you, 80% of the changes/features for the site were done based on what you guys wanted/needed. I just worked to facilitate those needs.

And, yes, forums evolve, both in content and community. Some like the change, some don't, but it happens all the time, especially in a community based around a game. The best we can do is improve as much as possible while still providing a place for you all to communicate and socialize in a fun way.

Wow so this is the forum dying? Still better than most other forums, I can't fathom what it'd be like in it's prime.

I personally joined this forum because I needed somewhere to hang about on since my last gaming forum died.

Bioshock was so awesome that I went searching around and found Ryan's Rapture which planned to make an animated series about 'Ryan's Rapture'. I was there pretty much from the start and I hung round to its death as a core member.

When it started to die I hopped over to my next favourite game LBP so this is what popped up on google.

If this dies then I guess it'll be the fallout forums, but they aren't nearly as good as this.

Oh and Bioshock isn't my favourite game, just the highest on my list I can find a good forum for

September 14th is when I registered, and about the only time I've been inactive is for the last couple of months (exams ftl). I still love LBPC. Epic community. Probably the nicest bunch of people I don't know.

Coming from an extreme veteran of the site, and remembering when I joined and the site had only 6 active members including myself. This site has grown by great leaps and bounds and the vast majority of people here are great and fun to talk to. But I will never understand why people have to bring drama to a fun loving video game message board. (not saying this is just past events have been)

As always I want to thank LBP and CC for putting the time and effort into making and mantaning this site I couldn't imagin the time this place takes from your guys lives. Oh and I would never want to go back to the times of only having 6 active members.

No it isn't getting better and it isn't some people leaving it's loads of really cool active members leaving and other stuff the forum is going downhill

The only ones I can name from the top of my head are:

ClankXIII
GuysWithNoEyes
dorien
Thee-Flash
DrunkMiffy
Forsaken

That's really the only "cool" members I think have left, I think your over exaggerating waaaaaay too much.

A wall of text filled with inactive cool members? Cmon let's be serious, you probably can't name 20, let alone a list that creates a wall of text.

This forum IS improving, it's NOT dying, and I don't think it will die for a while. I can run some statistics on how much new members we have, and I think we have way more cooler members now then we did back then, for me at least, there is probably 10 I can name off the top of my head that are awesome.

HamSalad
CCubbage
RangerZero
oldage
Thegide
Foofles
Vaniemera(However you spell that.)

and there is MUCH MUCH more I just got tired of thinking...

The game is six months old. Obviously people are going to move on. Consider yourself a die hard...and that's what most of THIS community is now. Die Hards. But don't fret. A big huge creator oriented patch is coming in the next two weeks and we'll see a whole slew of new people register and old people come back. I miss a lot of people too but what are you gonna do? Nothing wrong with making new friends. 2009-04-09 01:13:00

I actually joined this site this Febuary, so you could say I am a member of the "New community" here. I noticed that recently a few of formerly active members left last month. The old community sounded awesome, but I only really got hyped about LBP since about last October when I decided to get a PS3 for christmas and I hadn't heard about this site back then. I find this "new community" really cool though.2009-04-09 11:35:00

The truth of the matter is that people come and go and that's just the way it is. There's nothing that can be done - or could have been done differently - that would have allowed us all to remain one big, happy, "days of old" family. I'm not saying I've been here forever, but it's been a real bummer to see such great members like Forsaken and Miffy fall off...

I didn't read through all of the posts, but the lack of an online create mode at release really hurt this community more than anything. As you said, Rock, there were a lot of great ideas based around the community such as the resort. That said, what's stopping us from putting it together once Cornish Yarg is released? Assuming everything will work as it's advertised - and let's just hope it does - hopefully we'll see the realization of a lot of these ideas.

Anyone know if Stix every managed to produce "StixVision"? Still got the blueprints for the resort? These are things that I think would still be a ton of fun to work on in small groups and then - when all the hard work is done - we could have something really cool at the end of the day.

It's perfectly fine to reminisce about the "old days", but instead of dwelling - and I don't mean to contradict myself here - why not get back on a track for the "old days"? Let's reorganize, distribute responsibilities, and hit the ground running come April 16 when Cornish Yarg hits!

What do you say?

You know.... think about what Aer0blue said, and take it a bit further. Coming from a REALLY old guy (39) who still acts young and hangs around a lot of younger people (a lot of late teens and early twenties people hang around me and my wife because they think we're cool - and we both look really young...), I'm gonna tell you - LIFE is this way. When you get a bit older you will look back at all the things that keep changing and the friends that have come and gone, you'll realize a big part of being happy is remeniscing about the past good times, as well as creating new good times.

The truth is, I came into this forum in December and have great feelings about then, and great feelings about now. I had a lot of great interactions with OCK, NinjaMicWZ, Takelow, and Neverynnal. All incredibly intelligent people and fantastic artists with a knack for creating great games. Do I miss that they don't seem to interract much with me here anymore? Sure. And I hope after a break they get inspired to do another creation.

But now I've been working with a whole new set of great authors who I really like - RangerZero, Jaeyden, MrSuperComputer, Morgana25, GruntosUK, Samson107 - a whole new set of great people who are ultra-talented.

The key is, LBP is a game. This is a game forum. People will leave and more will show up as long as LBP does well and they are enjoying the game.

If friends leave - miss them, but make new ones.

Let's knock off the Stix bashing/defending; it's going nowhere...

Are we just set on living in the past then? If so, then I just think that's really sad as well as insulting to our newer members who - many would argue - are superior in many ways to those that have come and gone. Time to move forward, my friends.

There are certain ideas for threads which are great, and there are other ideas for threads which are bad. This thread falls into the category of bad because it diminishes the charm and the talent of the newer members, and makes it sound like earlier members were some kind of "super group".

This forum STILL rawks , it just has different members. If you want to still chat with people who have tired of LBP and are off doing something else, I'm sure they can still be reached through their PSN addresses. In the meantime - we have some amazing members with great talent who are also very cool. Just check out the showcase.

Never knew opinions are the same as complaining.

Wow... Don Vhalt and oldage... 2 older members smacking each other back and forth on a forum about how great old LBPC was... a little ironic, wouldn't you say? New members would NEVER stoop to this level! 2009-04-09 14:24:00

I think a major reason for that is that newer members are, ironically, older .

Anyway, this topic was just my random thoughts, and now it's escalating into a flame war :/. I dunno, perhaps it should be locked

Because you won't even bother to reply to my visitor messages, if you do I'm all happy.

Agreed. Let's all take a breather and make some new friends.

I just want to leave a final note, so this thread doesn't seem like it ended on bad terms.

Vhalt (and others who agree with him): Instead of dwelling on the fact that the people you liked have left (or in some cases, been banned), why not try to get to know many of the awesome new members we have? We've got a ton of friendly people here, and if you can't make friends with any one of them, then maybe it's not the forum that's dying, hm?

oldage: If Vhalt was ignoring your messages (which seemed to have resolved happily, so yay!), the best option is to say "Ok" and move on to someone who's more friendly. Provocation is never the answer, no matter how much someone irks you. The best solution is to let them boil in their own shoes, so to speak - why get yourself involved if you aren't the problem? Anyway, like I said, you guys seem to have realized that your small disagreement was childish and gotten over it, which is a fantastic example of how maturity and friendliness builds bridges between people. Keep it up, and spread it around!

Is the forum dying?: From what I've seen, not yet. We have at least one new Introduction thread every day, with more on some days, and that's 6 months after LittleBigPlanet launched. We're going through a cycle of old members leaving and new members taking their places. People feel left on their own, as their friends have all left. As I said to Vhalt, the best answer is to try to make friends with the new members and see where you can get. Dwelling on the past can be a horrible thing if you use it to measure your happiness in the present - instead, take what's been handed to you and run with it. You'll be surprised how much control you have when you do so.

RockSauron: I know your intentions were good. Honestly, it helped me understand where we're at now as a community, and what people expect of us. We're going through change, and while I don't think we're getting worse by any means, some things are going away. I appreciate your attempt at generating thoughtful discussion, and I thank you for helping me understand the way our members see the forum in it's current state. You're a good guy, mate, and I hope you stick around as long as you're happy here.
