The masses are strange...

Archive: 7 posts

A couple of days ago I published a lv called Cliff Runners - sneek peek! (I know I never finish these things but at least I try)

I turn the game off. I come back in a couple of hours and I find it with 0 hearts & 12 plays, rated 2 stars....

Then I delete it, publish it again & turn the console off. I come back (again) and find it with 4 hearts & 36 plays, rated 4 stars...

WTF?

Yeah, the ratings don't really mean a lot from a quality perspective, but from a play perspective they matter - people tend to want to play a 4 star rated level more than a 3, and will have a better attitude about it and be more likely to give it a heart.

It seems like the only way you REALLY know what the vast majority think is when it hits about page 2 of cool levels.

I've spent an enormous amount of time studying this, and my conclusion is horrible levels will end up at 1-2 stars after a few hundred plays, and a decent OR great level will be 3 OR 4 stars, and an absolutely mind-blowing level will keep a 5 star rating after several thousand plays.

Best thing you can do when you first release? Have a few friends immediately put a 5 star and heart on it to help it get past the slings and arrows of a few kids having the chance to unilaterally make a judgement on your level and ruin the rating. Then, the more plays it gets the more rounded everything becomes.

Sometimes it can depend on what the first player thinks of it. If they rate it one star (because they are the type of person that doesn't understand a concept/ are jealous of a good creation) then all the people that don't care about what feedback they give will automatically rate it the same (because after the first rating, the automatic rating switches to that). You will then be depending on the rating of experienced LBP creator-players usually to rate your level most suitably. However, it can be a rare occurrance now and, as you can see from almost everywhere in the LBP community levels, ratings are not as they were supposed to be.2009-04-08 19:52:00

Also if you ever publish a level with 'preview' in the name it will get marked down.

People always did it to my levels so I republished with a different name and voila! Hearts come in.

So did you put 'concept' afterwards or something like that?

Ok people will this become a weekly thread habit?

Use the search and read the forum sometimes.

And add threads where the title gives you a preview of what's in the thread. The titles are getting a bit vague.

By the way, this isn't off topic because the topic is "The masses are strange". They COULD be strange because they use vague topics in their threads (or because they like Britney Spears).
