Has anyone else seen this film? Was anyone else disappointed by the ending? Did anyone else think the ending was an echo back to the film AI, which was another good film up until the director decided to add a stupid ending?

Overall, I thought the first 2/3s were good, with some nice action scenes and a lot of action. But after that, I realised the ending, and decided that it wasn't worth waiting for. Nicolas Cage disappointed me with his annoying whisper-talking and cheesy falling-to-knees acting.

First 2/3s, 8/10, last 1/3, 3/10.

I have to agree. The first half or so keeps you interested but as soon as I realized where it was headed, it kinda started going downhill. Still a good movie... at least some of it.2009-04-08 14:29:00

I hated the entire thing (with the exception of the crashes - they were incredible eye candy). But the plot was SO predictable (right from the opening scene with the letters) and so tired (we've seen this same plot, same concepts in so many movies). The foreshadowing attempts were sledgehammer bludgeons to the head: "Here... in case you didn't catch on to our obvious hints, we'll show them 10-15 more times".

haha his dramatic knee collapse. and i thought is was hilarious how he just had a diagram on his computer about the solar flare. it was like, where did he find that!??Yes. And how about at the beginning when the little girl goes lost... the entire school staff, police, and parents running around the dark school with flashlights (oooo... the drama). Um... it's your school, right? So just turn on the flippin' lights!

At the end, I actually said out loud in the theater, "If this scene ends in a clearing with a big space ship I'm gonna puke." I did not puke, for what it's worth, despite the accuracy of my prediction. Horrible, re-hashed garbage. Save your money and never even rent this dog.

Nick Cage needs to get a new agent.

Nice rant The dropping hints thing was just ridiculously obvious. "Isn't it great how we're the perfect distance from the sun. The sun. The sun. Look, it's the sun. The SUN! Get me?....sun..."

I think he generated the little diagram then and there, but if not, yeah, what the hell?!

And also, the kid was writing down new numbers. So seems like everyone in the new Garden of Eden is screwed.

Yeah saw it. Thought it tried to be a jack-of-all-trades and it fell apart in the last half-hour or so.

Spoiler below, but you shouldn't be reading this thread if you need spoiler tags:

It tried to be a thriller, horror, disaster, alien flick... it did the first two parts very well and the disaster sequences are probably the best I've ever seen. But once you found out how it was going to end it ruined the movie and you just kind of waited impatiently for the end. The film lost its sense of conspiracy and intrigue. And then how they handled the aliens and the ending itself completely blew.

Also they never made it clear what Cage's job was so it seemed pretty stupid when he ran the program showing the sunburst or whatever it was called. Also the whole holding his family as the waited for the world to end was done much, much better in Deep Impact.

Honestly while the whole whispering thing was pretty cool and scary the film would probably have been better off without any aliens at all.

I like how everyone thinks they were aliens at the end...Wouldn't it make more sense if they were angels? You could even see hints of wings with the blue light coming off of them, and the lush, heavenly field they ended up in, all dressed in white? The brilliant white light which came from the whisper's mouth? I think angels. I felt the movie was better at making you think and provoke emotions then actual entertainment...quite good though... Not to keen on some of the acting though.2009-04-17 12:45:00

Oh they were clearly "angels", but I think the film was heading more towards the theory that human life was implanted by aliens, who we personified as angels and god, but were really just little green perfectly humanoid but glowy-blue and no facial featured men.2009-04-17 12:52:00

I personally loved the ending, and thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in years. The disaster sequences were great, and I loved the acting as well.

People seem to complain about the ending due to it going against their religious views, in most cases I've seen. That really, really, upsets me.

I don't give a **** if other movies have done it, I care about the quality of the movie overall.

What were you expecting?
Some knight in shining armour to save the world from an extinction event? xD
If it ended any other way than the apoloclypse it would've been disappointing.
The idea is that the list is ALWAYS right.
What I don't understand is that in the past, the little girl never got to finish the list, yet in the future, the list was seen as complete..?

But the death scenes were truely horrifying, especially listening to the guts spluttering from the cinema speaker 2 seats across...

Funny you linked the ending to AI... the things at the end looked a lot like the ones from AI...

I personally hated the ending in AI, thinking it to be far from epic, while loving the one in knowing. Guess that puts me in the minority.2009-04-18 09:45:00

The ending was simple. The end of the world, and humanity being given a new chance on another planet. Throw in what might seem like references to the bible, and you have an ending! I enjoyed it, personally. Reminds me that I should probably study the bible sometime...I remember it was a pretty good book when I was younger. It could also teach me a few things about why people act they ways they do.2009-04-20 05:25:00

What really bugged me is everybodies complaints about the ending...
Nicholas Cage isn't Chuck Norris. He can't save the world from certain death.

*Pulls out his pocketknife, cuts a hole in reality, takes everybody to a parallel earth, YAY was that the ending you wanted?*
And there was an amazing CGI scene at the end, if your eyes didn't appreciated that, then they you don't deserve to have them.

It wasn't the facts of the ending it was the way the ending was presented. That final scene just looked ridiculously stupid. The CG before that was amazing though.

I thought it was really well done.

Everything is relative and subjective. But we should still argue. =P
