A Pain in the Ro-butt

Archive: 9 posts

Just recently I have released this really strange level (the first with an actual plot! WOOT). It's about some sort of village over some kind of apocalyptic robot something-or-other.

Basically, a town is being overrun and destroyed by robots, made from a robot machine, and you have to battle the robots and shut the machine down.

There's a 2 player challenge if you want extra prizes, and if you beat the level you have the opportunity to play it again as a race, for more points and leaderboard awesomeness.

Please review and stuff, leave a note about one of your levels and I'll review it too.

If though, in a week, I haven't reviewed your level, then send me a PM and I'll be straight onto it

Cheers! Trust me, it's nothing special. Just what 24 hours of spare time has to offer, anyway!2009-04-08 13:09:00

Ok, I played it today and....it was very odd!
Overall it was a fun, if a bit challenging, level.

Pros:
+The design, everything looked really good
+Pencil guy - he was also well designed
+The robot machine

Cons:
-Very difficult at times
-Slightly repetitive (I was always ducking for cover then firing, then running on....)

Overall, 3 Stars but a "repetitive" tag

The name is amazing! You should post pictures or a video of the level to get more feedback from people. I will give this a try later.2009-04-14 19:36:00

Just checked it out and it's nicely built! Liked your robot design and especially that the brains flip like the MM ones. Very short time space to get them though. (Not too hard though) The turrets firing plasma are ok. The second one has a very hard angle and it's even trickier to get in position with the three layers of plasma. I figured it out my second time through but it took me out the first time.

I like the design of the factory but it's really boring in there. Nothing at all to do after you outrun the first security section. The tracking plasma hallway was great though. Level ends rather abruptly too. Kind of thought there's be someone behind the robot plot or something. I'm guessing thermo killed the rest of the level plan.

I love your design style in the level. It's clean, interesting and uses some materials in unique ways. The pencil people are funny too! I'd have to agree with Coxy224 that in some spots (swings over fire - 2nd turret) it's sort of hard for average players and the fire and turrets and bots get a little repetitive. Mind you - most of the things I'm pointing out are minor and I still really enjoyed playing the level. Thanks for sharing it!

Hey, I'm also from County Durham, small world eh! Where abouts are you from? Anyway I played your level, heres what I thought.

Nice looks at the start of the level, very clean looking, and they fit in well. I liked the enemy design, with the rotating brain, MM style. The first enemy that shot the plasma was no challenge however, I don't know if this was intentional or not with the obstruction being between you. I agree with Morgana about the second turret, its difficult to hit and see which plane the plasma is on, perhaps change the colour of the plasma on each plane to you can identify it? You have some switches visable, in front of the first pencil man (nice design by the way) and a couple of emitters on the second turret, and then another prox. switch on the lift after it. The next three turrets are very easy to kill and offer no challenge. You have emitters visible on the crane type thing that shoots plasma in the robot base. I liked how the woman tells you to have a nice day after thier creations had tried to kill you, I laughed at this, nice touch. Nice little details in the factory with the computers and things. More prx swtiches visible, you should hide all of these I have mentioned, it give the level a more clean look. A quick ending, I expected a boss at the end. I liked the sticker to open the race up at the end, I wondered what the switches were for right through the level

This was a nice little level, well designed and fun to play. There were a couple of issue to fix up, and the rating reflects this.

*** and good tag

haha, cheers everyone.

@Coxy224 - thanks! Yes, indeed, quite repetitive. To be honest i'm not generally great at keeping the player 'wow'ed. And it is difficult... maybe that's why there aren't many high scores, haha. Cheers for the overall positive review, i will fix things up later.

@Morgana25 - thankyou! I really messed up where I put the second turret, maybe I can change this without the whole level collapsing. This is what happens when glue is involved. The thermometer was a bit of a let-down, I guess using the 'capture object' feature excessively is a bad idea. Thanks for the review!

@GrantosUK - You might say it's a LittleBigPlanet! Haha, I'm from Ferryhill if that's any use to you! I needed a bit of humour in the level, hence the 'Have a nice day' message, it happens in all of my levels at some point. yeah, like i mentioned, the thermometer doesn't like excessive amounts of captured objects, so i couldn't really fit a boss battle in here. Originally, you'd have a pencil man tell you to watch out for the C.A.T, the Computer-Aided-Terroriser, conveniently shaped like a cat, enclosed in a robot which was enclosed in another robot. Tee-hee. So it NEARLY had a boss... Thanks for the review.
