Portal tool -suggestion

Archive: 20 posts

Having played around with teleportation i think it would be a great edition to the in game tool set if there was a teleport door ie. you place one and then you place another and join them with wires tweak em' etc.

Then when you stand infront of one and press up you eneter it and pop out at the other predefined door.

while i have successfully replicated doing this using ideas from various users in my example level "2 way teleport pods" I beleive this is a glitch as you can't readily spawn an activated check point (you gotta do a bunch of stuff to captcher one)

Also you have to die inorder to teleport which means players cant ace a level.

True, this would also be useful for when they run out of space(vertically/horizontally) they'd just be able to continue in another area of the level and have the teleporter teleport them there.2009-04-06 03:01:00

This is a top notch suggestion.

A teleport door would be extremely useful.

Would be hard on MM part but if they've managed to build the stuff they have then this can't be that much of a challenge surely? After all MM is the best (Mega Flattery ).2009-04-06 14:20:00

Think of this situation:

You got 2 player and two doors that are far away from ech other. Now one player enters the door. So, what happens to the screen? If the screen would follow one player then the other player can't see where he is going.

You go into the same queue you would as if you died with a check point off screen. The game just doesn't count it as a death when everyone is ready to spawn at the new portal.2009-04-07 21:05:00

I like it.

By "door" do you mean like coming out a checkpoint, in reverse?

No matter what, sounds awesome.

Yeah pretty much basicaly it opens up you chuck a summersault and go through it.

And i guess the door design could be slightly different to indicate it is a portal/wormhole/door to next area....

This situation already exists in game where some one goes off screen or dies they have to wait till the next check point.... however perhaps you could tweak the door to be "requires all or something" or it could become a theme for a level eg. last man/sack to the portal dies

Great idea man, it would be much easier and flow better than keep having to make elevators to take you up to another floor just because you reach the limit of the level. I always have trouble with elevator settings aswell. I usually use a sensor switch set to direction which is perfect for one player but if there are multiple players as soon as one steps on it goes without the others. Conversely if I set it to require all it works fine to go up when everyone is on but if one gets off at the top before the others it goes down again and anyone left on it is stuck.

The teleporter door idea would save all that trouble. We can only hope MM implement it sometime , but don't expect it anytime this year !!

a portal level pack would be really cool

the portal gun/portals could be used in loads of situations, and the new materials would be really useful too

An object teleporter would help with my Rube Goldberg Type levels.

I have seen several levels that say something about a 'Rube Goldberg' machine but I must admit I have no idea who or what that is. Could someone enlighten me please

BTW xvs I played your level and got the teleporter prize and thought they were extremely well done and looked good to boot. I think I left a comment to such effect in the level comments. It would be good to see them implemented in a level in some way. Good work anyway mate.

This tool would be used to such an extent that it would be no fun anymore, nor would it be original. I think the art of making a teleport is that you need to put in the effort to do it, and that's what separates the creators from the H4H people.2009-04-11 21:38:00

it'd definatly spawn a lot of really bad levels, but i don't think it'd make a difference to real creators. just make the level boundaries less annoying

and think of all the cool puzzles that could be made!

There's a difference between "putting an effort in" and being a professional coder man! It's just not possible unless you do the lame "kill > move checkpoint > respawn" thing that was fun for about 4 minutes.

I'm not sure about a portal style teleport gun, but I think that a teleport checkpoint would be quite useful. This would mean that if you run out of space at one place, just smack in a teleporter and voila, you can continue it in an area away from the rest of the level, and instantly have more space.2009-04-12 01:01:00

Good point... in fact a can knock together a working teleport in a few minutes.
