Station B19 - My new level

Archive: 17 posts

Hi,
I'm starting work on my new level on Wednesday, On the theme of a space station. I hope to make it a stunning level visuals-wise, but also challenging and original gameplay. So, onto the quezzies:
1. Does the Paintinator require the MGS pack? I have 2 setups for the first enemy (a turret) and one use the Paintinator to kill it. The other bounces you up to grab and object and this makes it explode.
2. I like the idea of using Stiff Rods to make a cris-crosses girder pattern, like the kind you see on cranes. Would this be cool or silly?
3. Unlike other 'White Futuristic Everything is Clean' style stations, I want this to have a real feeling of grime and decrepidness. I'm basing it off the Doctor Who yellow base, where he meets the devil. Do you think a yellow base could work? Some details would of course be other colours, but It wouldn't be the standard base style everyone is making, where everything is bright white.
4. I think a great challenge would be to replace fule rods in a nuclear reactor, whilst being shot at by 2 turrets. Once its done the turrets explode, a door opens, and the Turret, spinning electricity traps, and Fuel Rod prize bubbles are released. Do you think this is a worthwhile prize, or will people not bother?
5. I'm always looking for idea's for visual effects and background detail. If you have any ideas, please, post them up!
6. How do I change the camera angle and lighting? Specifically, how do I make it dark so you have to drag a light with you?
Thanks for any help,
SP

1)Yes you need the MGS pack.

2)If you pull it off then it would definitely look cool.

3) I'm not sure about yellow, maybe dark and rusty themed?

4) If you contain the entire fuel rod area, with the turrets included, then I think it will be useful to some people.

5) Air vents would work well. Just create a vent shape and put a rocket behind it so that it looks like air is being blown out.

6)The camera angle object is in the tools bag. On the second last or last section in your tool bag you'll find the darkness setting.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!
I like your idea of air vents and such, i'll have a play around with rockets to see if I can get the desired effect, and maybe come up with some new uses. I have also designed a platform hanging on 2 rods, with a rocket at one end which pushes the platform up and to the side. You have to jump off before you get crushed.
What do you think?

Oh, yeah, and rusty is good. Very good actually - I can take it in so many directions! Well, watch out for this level at the end of the easter break!

No, you can purchase the Paintinator separately if you want.

errr no. You have to buy the MGS pack. And you should but it because it's like the best DLC ever coded by humans. And this applies also if you're not an MGS fan.

Checked and you're right. The MGS costumes and the Paintinator were available as separate downloads at one point in time though, I guess they amalgamated them into one download pack. Sorry for causing confusion.

It's not worth ?5 to me. I'm waiting for it to drop in price.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, it really helps me to develop and theme this level. My dream is for this to end up in Community Spotlight, and to be known as 'the guy that made this concept actually work'. (What i mean here is that 90% of the space station-type levels i've played have been quite frankly crap!
A couple more quezzies for the LBP community:
1. How do I get ice? Is it in the MGS pack or Cornish Yarg or something? I haven't got it but its in the level building teaser on youtube, so it must exist!
2. I swere there was water in that video to. He didn't use it, but there was definately a sea blue coloured matierial in the basic matierials section of his poppit.
3. I might buy the MGS pack, hough not for the paintinator, but for the new matierials. What do you get?
4. Any ideas for rooms inside a Plasma Havesting Station? I think a room where you see the inner working of the havesting device and float around in space might work, but i'd like to hear your thoughs, as well as any other ideas you have.
5. Plasma Storage Vats will probably be in the level, but what would they be made of and how would they look? Obviously they would be metal, probably with a red or yellow piece of glass in front and warning signs. Also, maybe there should be some Carbboard boxes in the storage area? With cornish yarg I can hide bolt and therfor make an awesome box with moveable flap, and there are lots of stickers I could use when making signs with 'this way up', 'Fragile', 'keep dry' etc., but is it actually worthwhile? bear in mind this will be just 10 years in the future, and still in our solars system. (harvesting plasma from the sun)
Thanks,

1) It does not exist. It was too hard to work out. For more info on ice, check out Mm's second podcast (http://www.mediamolecule.com/2009/03/19/media-molecule-podcast-no2/).

2) There is no water either. For more on false water, check this out
YouTube - Littlebigplanet Water Physics Test 1
YouTube - Littlebigplanet Water Physics Test 2
YouTube - LittlebigplanetWaterPhysics Test 3.

3) You get 5 story levels that are similar to the story mode. (Being that you need to find the objects).

4) I have no idea how you could do that well without the plasma ball from the MGS pack.

5) Once again, I have no idea. I'm not the creative type. (Big JK there.)

waaat? Describe to me what they would need to pack in 5$ for you to bite. Did you ever look at what devs generally offer as DLC? The MGS pack gives more content that any other DLC update since the launch of the 360 and PS3 maybe outside Shivering Isles update for Oblivion. And Shivering Isles did cost WAY MORE than 5$ anyways.

So basically, when selling a costume for 2$ is like the general practice we see with DLC. Now with the MGS pack you get:

-5 levels + a boss + a couple of bonus levels (in short, the value of one world in the story mode)

-New power up for sackboy bringing a whole new dimension to gameplay

-Tons of new materials and stickers for creation (expanding again the creativity)

-Costumes

-3 pieces of music added + one that is interactive.

... and it's not worth a mere 5$?

I'd say it's worth purchasing at $7.36 as well. But that's just me. 2009-04-07 01:02:00

My advice:

Don't use tin foil for space ship material. I did this in a level and only discovered later that it ruins lighting effects.
