Dynamic Light

So I was watching the GDC 07 trailer, and I noticed that those little stars (you know, the green, pink and blue ones) actually give off quite a bit of dynamic light.

Looked really cool. I wonder why they dropped that idea?

Wow... ur right! I just watched the video and I noticed that too. Maybe they didn't drop the idea, they just tweaked it to maximum brightness, I don't know, the ps3's in my big brothers room (we switch between rooms monthly) and I don't know that if you tweaked it to full brightness it would work. Ohhhhhh I know how it happened!!! as you can see in the video, there were more than 3 (interactive) layers, maybe when they converted it to only use three layers, the dynamic lighting only showed on the layer of the light.

They somehow made the physics look way more real and alive in this demo, than it turned out in the actual game. Look at the that tree, and how twangy and bouncy it is. And look at the way they actually needed all 4 players before they could lift that snailshell. Also the camera angles feel a lot more dynamic because of the way they swing from side to side and the zoom is constantly changing.

They probably had to tweak a lot of things to make it processor/online friendly though. And to make it all more predictable and accurate.

Ah well... its still genius

It seemed more "realistic". As Pitcard mentioned, the physics seemed better.

A part that I loved in the video, was when they all jumped on that brown triangular cloth thing and it actually bent inwards, like it would in real life.

I wish that it was possible to tweak those stars, like you can with other lights. That would be epic.

The gameplay in that trailer is very different then in the real game. As others have said, it has more layers, more realistic physics, better camera zones and much more. I guess they had to get rid of a lot of these things to make the game actually playable online. That light from the stars was really cool.2009-04-08 21:09:00
