Tiger Woods Mini Golf - Spotlighted! Now with video

Archive: 49 posts

Ok, my newest level is a short arcade-style miniature golf game. It incorporates a unique golf-swing mechanic which makes it fun to play. On each green you get 10 balls and 3 targets - each of varying difficulty and produce points accordingly.

Check it out!

My PSN is CuzFeeshe

Thanks to Vanemiera for the great video!

I had seen this and I MAY still do this... but I would need to change the level and re-sticker Tiger to another golf player (Hot Shots Out of Bounds is in competition with Tiger Woods Golf).2009-04-02 02:54:00

oh - ok - I guess I didn't realize that.

Just played it and that's quite the addictive little level you've got there. I really liked playing it and was compelled to keep trying to get a better score! Liked the windmill - gotta have a windmill in mini-golf. Liked the ship (not so much the shark - he's nicely designed - I just have "issues" with sharks.) Could you put a block or an incline on the right side of the water to get up to the next green - it's a little hit & miss depending on the height of the wave - not a big deal at all but it sort of stopped the flow by having to jump a few times for those of us not so coordinated. Loved the Egyptian themed area. Sphinx is brilliant!

Oh yea - it's cute how you have Tiger's head wobble too. Very funny.

I'll probably keep popping in to play a few more times.... gotta sink more golf balls!

Hey CCubbage, I just finished playing your latest level.
Even though I completely sucked at it, I had a lot of fun!!

+ The golf-swing mechanic works really well, I was very impressed with that.
+ I wasn't expecting multiple golfcourses, that was great.
+ Replay value

- Morgana already mentioned this, when you finish the 2nd course, the jump after the whale could be improved.
- That's it!!

A very enjoyable lvl that demands you to try again!!
Gave it 5 stars, hearted it and tagget it with "ingenious"

Great job once again, CCubage!!

I had thought of this the last time I was playing and "I" had this problem lol..... I'm going to fix this tonight.

I don't know whether you noticed, but each course has different music, and Tiger's head bobs at the tempo of each song!

Thanks man!

Interestingly, the "golf swing" mechanic is an idea I've been working with that's kind of interesting - how to make numerous results occur based on how long a switch has been activated. Once this object is perfected, I'm going to publish it and see if anyone else has a use for it.

So, the idea is: you stand in a single location for a period of time, OR you grab something for a period of time. Once you exit the area (or let go of the thing you are grabbing) 1 of 6 other actions can occur.

In my case, the 6 other actions are one of 6 emitters that are activated.

I'm thinking some really non-linear gameplay could come out of this.

I've been thinking of doing some kind of golf level myself so I had to try this out.
Here's what I think. It's great, but there are a couple of issues. On my first game I didn't know exactly where to shoot the ball, I assumed to aim for the light so I did then I noticed the other lights. you might want to tell the slow people like myself what to do. Also on my first game I somehow fell down next to the whale. Other than that I thought it was great. The shooting mechanics
are very good, and it's also a good looking level. This could be very addictive. I only played 3 times but I'll be back for more. I just wish it were longer. overall
great job!!

I usually have the music turned off while chatting and must have left it off because I didn't notice it! Gotta go play it again... as if I needed an excuse. Thanks for mentioning it.

Cool, I'm glad you liked it! What you ran into falling down with the whale is actually part of the level. There's a platform you can walk on behind the water and jump up on shore. I'm going to try to make it more obvious based on Morgana25's suggestion to add a ramp going up to the shore.

And I'm definately thinking of adding a little strategy guide to each course so people understand what to do.

CCUbbage,

This was awesome. I played it through several times trying to beat the second place score (yours - I didn't have many illusions about that 1st place... how'd he DO that??) but I just missed.

Aw well, at least I beat Morgana!

Great level. I would encourage you to remove the Tiger references and enter in Sony's golf contest!

Yeah, Smasher decimated the top score!

I haven't quite decided whether to enter that Golf contest or not. I'll decide in the next few days. I normally don't enter contests.

Thanks for the input!

I did make a ramp from the water to make it easier to get to the next golf section.

This level is simply awesome! The gameplay is easy and funny, the holes are very cool, and all the level has a great grapich. I had really fun with this mini game, i think you can use it for the Competition of Golf in the LBP site
Maybe to make it more cool, you can add some people, watching your minigolf match
5/5 stars and hearted!
And i'm on the second place with 36.450 points

Thanks, everyone! Who would have thought a golf game would be popular? XD!!!

By the way, I JUST added a 4th course (GrantosUK may have seen it). I decided the game wasn't fun enough, so I through in a pretty rockin' MGS-themed pinball-style section.

Did you add gas to the level last night?

I kept getting killed in the water and in the gas under the bridge last night but I was playing with two other players. Might be a more than one player thing.

Yup, another course. This one, I think, is actually the most fun. I decided since, technically, it is a game of "golf" and therefore not really what you would call..... action packed.... I wanted to finish the level with a "bang" and throw in something completely unexpected.

Also, I took the time to properly sticker up the sides of Tiger's head with hair and skin so his head looks more 3 dimensional instead of just looking like a sticker of his face stuck on the front of a piece of material.

No, I didn't add gas - the gas was already there under the bridge for effect. However, since the level was primarily for 1 player I didn't do any 2 player testing. It seems that if 2 players walk on the bridges, it pushes down a little too far into the gas. I fixed this on the last republish. Thanks for telling me.... probably cost me a few "rubbish" tags in the meantime. But, all's good!

I love this level. I keep trying to beat my score, so I always find myself commin back for more. The only thing is that I keep overflowing the bucket with score bubbles. something like this normally wouldn't bother me accept it keeps messing up my combo. Every time
I play I end up with at least 15 to 20 score bubbles on the ground, some on each side of the bucket. this makes it impossible for me to get my best score. If you could just put a couple of pieces of invisible dark matter at the top edges of the bucket, it would be an easy fix. Anyway, great work keep it up!!!

Man, I'd love to..... but I designed it so that the bucket WOULD overflow. I thought it looked great having points so full they were pouring on the ground. And I also made sure that it was possible to grab the points on the ground and jump quickly into the bucket to get the other points and keep the x score going.

By the way, I made some additional improvements and took some earlier advice on this thread and added a little strategy guide to each section.

Also.... about the guy with the 2nd highest score.... I drilled down on the PSN name and it's the guy who had that other golf game at the top of cool levels last week. It was decent but had really clunky controls where you had to grab 3 different thinks to do the same think I did with one grab (sponge to drop the ball, sponge to set the impact, and spong to hit). So I think he's spying on me.

yeah that's cool. It's a fair contest any way because the same thing will happen to everyone. It's just hard to get the ones on the right without going a little to far and crossing over the finish line, then you lose all your bubbles in the bucket.2009-04-05 19:28:00

Try this... get the points on the left quickly, and jump up into the bucket quick enough to keep the x score going. Grab all the points in the bucket and as you grab the last one jump back down and run to the right to grab the last ones.

(and I don't feel sorry for you... you've creamed everyone else's score in this game)

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I'm a little leary about entering the contest, actually. It seems like they are looking more at designed holes than gameplay, and I'm much more technical than visual. I'm decent at simple arcade-looking things and I'm really good at gameplay mechanics, but this contest doesn't seem to be directed at my skill-set.

I was actually a bit irritated to hear about the contest. Just as I was putting the final touches on my golf level (that I thought was completely original) I see other golf levels start appearing and had no idea what was going on.

Awesome, awesome level!

Only suggestion, would be to somehow have the power on the meter scroll up and down, and you need to release at the right time, rather than just go up. I know this would be incredibly hard to do however!

5 stars, tagged "Funky" and hearted!

Actually that would not be THAT hard. I guess, CCubbage just uses a piston going up activating the different states (lamps). Set the piston trigger to on/off so it moves up and down instead of just up and ad another piston moving in the opposite direction to the original piston that is triggerd with directional. This way, when the player releases his grab, the opposite piston pushes the on/off piston down to the starting postion. Tada!

From seeing the video I am going to check your level out, looks like fun. BEST LEVEL EVER!

Actually, I chose the mechanic on purpose. It actually would have been MUCH easier to just have it going up and down, but I wanted a mechanic closer to the actual golf games out there - where a meter starts going up and you take your swing when the level is where you want it.

The "swing mechanic" object was actually pretty rough to design. You need to be able to start a swing by grabbing, and have the meter level set and fire the ball at a specific velocity immediately by letting go - which isn't a really natural thing to do in LittleBigPlanet. And it must completely reset back to the beginning state for each ball.

I will tell you.... unless there is a better idea, this object took 8 pistons, 9 emitters, and 15 magnetic keys per instance of Tiger. (I tried it with 2 pistons that way and I just couldn't get the affect)

Wow!
This is brilliant!
It's seriously probably the best golf level out there, you MuSt enter it in the contest. The only two things that could be slightly improved are the visuals and the last course. While the visual aspect of the level on some parts is stunning there are some things which are pretty lacking, it's all about spending ridiculously long time on making lots of details, you don't need to be super skilled at drawing or anything just take your time. Secondly on the last course i found a "cheat" when the opening comes close to the highest position in its rotation you just need to fire with max meter to hit, preferably you should make it so that it gets impossible to hit the opening with max charge so that it requires a little more skill. Once i figured it out i managed to get all ten balls into the rotating thing.
Once you have done that, or at least worked a little on the visual part then i could bet a hundred swedish krowns on that you will at least be mentioned by Mm.

Thanks, bud! Yeah, I had fun with this one. The idea of this level really made me laugh, and I figured it would go nuts on cool levels. Finally made it to page 1!

Wow!

Thanks! I'm actually designing a single more "realistic" and aesthetically pleasing shooting range that more fits in with the rules. If it works out, I'll publish it to enter the contest. This particular level goes against many of the rules.

I appreciate that. If there's any specifics for visuals (like a particular object) I'd like to hear - however, keep in mind I carefully designed the course to be very "mini golf"-like and more toy-looking. I wasn't going for realism. In fact, I purposely tried to make everything look fake and almost plastic looking so it would have the affect of a real mini golf game.

This was actually on purpose. I found early on I was getting frustrating tags and lower scores because I believe younger ones would leave the level with very few points and get frustrated. I made this last hole area of a "satisfaction" area where you could easily hit balls in there and get a rush and leave happy. As soon as I did this my ratings and hearts went WAY up.

No, theres no particular object, all the objects look really great. Its mostly that there aren't as many details, maybe you should add a flower there, some more sand dunes there etc. What i meant when i said that some parts are pretty lacking was that the last course and the ending is pretty ugly. The rotating thing looks ok but the background is mostly very boring.2009-04-08 08:16:00

Yeah, I spent many hours tweaking this part. It ended up being a trade off. If I made the thing in the middle spin slower, the bumpers never broke - BUT it lost that cool frenetic feel. If I made it spin faster I would get the proper effect, but sometimes the bumpers broke. If I changed the bumpers to something that wouldn't break, the BALL would break and you would get less points.

In playing with it, though - I figured, hey - maybe in real life they WOULD break with that much pressure.

I agree with the ending - I could have probably put a lot more work into the exit. I'll look at it.

The like the last area (the spinning thing) though. I did dress it up a bit, but I wanted it to be clean looking.
