Conficker worm/virus

Archive: 50 posts

Is anybody infected with it? I'm not, but I downloaded Symantec's removal tool just in case. I'd also recommend visiting symantec.com and getting the lowdown, maybe a copy of the removal tool too in case you get infected. Here are some steps for disabling autorun (for flash drives) in Windows XP:

To disable autorun in Windows XP Professional, do the following:

Start > Run > gpedit.msc
(Left Pane) Computerer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System
(Right Pane) Set "Turn off autoplay" to "Enabled"

I hope none of you are infected with this horrible worm. If you are and need help, post about it!

Edit: I just remembered, I think the network at my school is infected because all of a sudden none of the computers can recognize flash drives. I didn't read anything about flash drives not working with the virus. It's also strange, seeing how newer revisions of the worm use flash drives to spread.

A lot of people seem to misunderstand, this virus launches today, it's not going to leave after today, it LAUNCHED today.

So, it'll be there tomorrow, friday, saturday, sunday, 2010, 11, 12, then, we're all dead so it doesn't matter.

Luckily I'm not infected either, if you want to check if your infected, go to www.windows.com, if your internet freezes, you are infected since the virus doesn't allow you to go to that website, or any anti-virus website for that matter.

I've done my research, a few tips if you are infected.

1) And the most important, do not log into anything with personal information that actually matters, the virus is a keylogger, which means it sees what you type and everything. Don't do your banking online, or anything that matters to you.

2) You must reformat your PC if you are infected, there is no cure for the virus as of right now.

3) You mac/linux users are safe, no need to worry. Lucky...

4) I would recommend www.nod32.com for an antivirus if you aren't infected, it's the best one I've seen so far.

Some more information on the virus No one clearly knows what this virus is, it hasn't done any damage at all actually, if the creator was smart enough, he wouldn't use it today, to create that "April Fools" essence, give it a few weeks to really see if your infected... Also, this bot has the potential to shut down the internet all together, it has 2 billion bots working on 50,000 websites, constant attacks, may bring down the most important websites.

Do not, and I REPEAT, DO NOT do your banking online. It will screw you over.

Once again, no one knows what this virus does, it may just be an April Fools joke, or a virus that spams "You got April Fooled!" a thousand times, people believe it's a keylogger though.

And the creator is German if anyone wants to know.

Con = Configuration, Ficker = Well, it's a word in german that I'm not allowed to say on these forums, Google it up.

On the plus side it means that *** 'games for windows LIVE' doesn't work

Edit: Also Mac users who use windows are at risk too

I suggest you guys also use a combination of anti-virus softwares if ever you go the free route.

Have only one running at the same time for a shield or something like that though.

In my experience, i've seen Avira finding viruses and worms that Nod32 and Malwarebytes didn't find. The 3 of them are good free anti-viruses though. I suggest running a scan of at least 2 of them.

My personal favorite shield is Avira one though.

Yep, it's meant to be the best one and it's almost finished for me. Apparently it deletes and then immunises your system.

It's also one of the only ones you can actually download while infected.

Yeah the only thing that seems to work is the windows malware but you need to have access to a pc which can download it as the Conficker blocks off microsoft.

Luckily my Mum's computer downloaded before it got blocked off.

Only windows worked for me and it took a few attempts. I'm all patched up now too so I'm protected

So, having Windows fully patched along with an updated anti-virus is supposed to keep everything in working order, right?

Unless you get a memory stick with the worm and you accidentally activate it

(look carefully at the autorun menu and you'll notice that 'open file' is both in install and in the other box; do not use the install option)

But really your anti virus should pick up on it.

Good presentation it's in two parts YouTube - Case Conficker — Part 1

See the video; it got activated April fools so it will be dialling up loads of other computers to infect them. Then it tries to contact 'home' where the 'bad guys' can then use connected computers to look at personal details, install software you don't authorise etc.

I haven't been infected with the virus yet. It was supposed to have activated at April 1st, and nothing major has happened yet. I'd say if nothing major has happened in about 2 or 3 days from now then we all should be ok.2009-04-05 10:33:00

Pretty sure this was the case. Work in IT and - even though it's not necessarily a given - not a thing was mentioned between any of us about it...

If I were the dude that activated it, I wouldn't have it do anything for the first two weeks, just to make it seem like a joke, which seems to be working.

That's IF I was him, maybe it was a joke, I doubt it though...

How are you so sure? It was on the Yahoo News, and on NBC news... I don't think 4chan is that powerful...

Or is it?

Oh dear God...
I heard it originated from 4chan from my Anon friend, so idk.

And apparently he was wrong. A quick search brought me these results.

Apparently it's real. The last revision was way before April Fools Day, so it's not bs.

Haha, speaking of which i think i might have accidentally downloaded a virus into my school computer XD
Don't know what it is as i noticed the "You might have one or more viruses" alert by the time i was leaving class, i guess i'll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out.

Virus fake! I think not; as I said it will be dialling up other computers so the effects will take awhile to come into play. That video I posted showed that computers were reaching websites so all it takes is for the 'bad guys' to buy the domain name that conficker comes up with and put some trojan or spambot on it then all pc's will download it.2009-04-09 16:27:00

Yeah, if you partition the hard drive and install windows via bootcamp then i guess you could, but why ruin a perfectly good operating system?2009-04-10 15:09:00

Author:

Yeh.... Who would do that O_O... *Cough*. I actually use bootcamp myself for Steam. The Mac and PC partitions are two completely different things. You could infect the PC partition with every virus imaginable but the Mac side of things will remain perfect... Like it always it >____<.

Anyway, sure a mac is the SAFE computer. Sure PC is the computer that is hard to handle but POWERFUL. But it's forgetting that only the significantly skilled in computers can unlock the potential of a mac. When someone can do that, they go at the SPEED OF LIGHT! Crushing the PATHETIC PC! MWUHAHAHAH!

It's true :3.

One LAST Thing: Ever notice on a PC how you can delete things, and even when you have no files left you only have half the original space left? The mac have a terminal command that can get rid of anything and get 100% of the space back. Introducing, RM -R (File Here). Does PC have THAT?

Nobody liked my animation? 3:

It's safe virus wise, but you have to be computer savvy to use it, as EVERYTHING is customizable. I wish I had a chance to use it more often.

They have a map of where the Conficker virus is.

The Conficker is mutating into more complex viruses.

CBS news got infected! HAHAHAH!!
