classic sidescroller remakes

Archive: 20 posts

I think it's pretty safe to say that we'll see a plethora of levels remade from classic sidescrolling games, I bet that someone will remake the entire Super Mario Bros. game, actually, I wouldn't be surprised if all of the sidescrolling Mario games were remade. Also, Donkey Kong seems pretty obvious, after seeing the flaming barrels in the Leipzig gameplay video.

What sidescrolling games do you think could be remade accurately, or that you have considered recreating yourself?

I might attempt Contra, It's got a lot of platforms, obviously you wouldn't shoot, but it wouldn't be too hard to do either.2008-08-24 01:47:00

The problem is, the sackboys look kinda floaty when the yjump, so the game mechanics might be a little different. But I mean go ahead. I have plans to make a level similar to Donkey Kong Land 2 for GB, pretty much my favourite platformer ever. I'm sure I can build a mine-cart rollercoaster and barrels that shoot your sackboy. MM actually already made Mario level 1-1 they said. I'd love to see it!
Sonic levels would be kinda pointless to make without the speed of sonic. Though i may try make one anyway for the awesomeness. Im actually trying make 3D games into 2D sidescrollers

I was thinking sonic could be possible if you put your sackboy inside a hamster ball. Then you could roll down hills really fast and then get sprung and flung about by various contraptions.

Not to offend anyone here or criticize anyone's ideas, but doesn't this lack originality and creativity? I mean, I wouldn't mind playing a remade level or two, sure, but...you'd think people would be aiming more for original ideas. I'm seeing a lot of "remade level" ideas lately. :2008-08-24 03:28:00

I couldn't disagree more.

Doing levels from other games is a fantastic way to start in my opinion. You've got a bases on what to build your level upon - so it's just a good time to get used to the tools. I wouldn't say it lacks creativity at all - hell, it even creates it in some cases. You'll get to one part of a level you can't do (cause of a boss for example) and end up coming up with a great solution. Also when going from a 3D to 2D game you need creativity there to make it possible. I can't wait to start making levels from other games. Originality does not always equal fun. I'd love to be able to make a nostalgic feeling when playing my remade MGS level. If that happens - i see it as a success.

Ofcourse i'll be making totally new ones - and will most of the time, but at first i'll be making levels already done (but with a LBP twist) so i can get used to the tools etc. That way by the time i come to make my own levels - i'll be able to do excactly what i want.

Appropriation, pastiche and parody are all creative. Trying to pull off basic mechanics from old games using the physics in LBP, to me, is a creative feat. That being said, I don't personally plan to copy entire levels, just ideas from them. After all, LBP is a platformer, and it should stand on the shoulders of it's predecessors.2008-08-24 04:43:00

it isn't original but yea it will be a great start for people to get used to the tools and make certain items that mimic things in game will probably be the best way to get familiar with the tools in a quick fashion. Also this game should have no restrictions on what to make so people without ideas can still join in the fun of making levels. I probably won't be making any level from old games intentionally but i really do want to play peoples level based off the old school games of yesteryear2008-08-24 05:12:00

I think your spot on there. Until we get our grubby little paws on this game we don't truly know what the game and by extension ourselves will be capable of. First we must understand how a wheel works. Then we can start to forge our own wheels and then after time when we have truly perfected the art of wheel making can we consider re-inventing it.

I thought I had posted in this thread but, I was probably thinking of LBF.
Anyways, I, personally, will not be remaking any classic game levels. Within a week, LBP is going to be saturated with Mario and MegaMan remakes.
What I will be doing, on the other hand, is trying to use some classic concepts to make things in my own levels.

What I do look forward to is playing the best of the classic remakes. I'm sure I'll enjoy the nostalgia of playing SMB 1-1.

Yeah, I'm not going to be remaking any classic levels, I just don't have the patience, but I would like to see remakes, seeing Mario remade in LBP style, with an appropriate Sackboy outfit would be fun.2008-08-24 15:59:00

So I was playing Crash 2 earlier and it occured to me with the side scrolling bits "OMG! This is perfect!!!". So yeah, Crash Bandicoot themed levels. 2008-08-25 00:35:00

Wait, didn't you think to just recreate the whole level!? i think that would be awesome! Think about it.... it's very linear and you're always going forward. What's to say you can't make the same levels... but when you play them you'll just have a camera angle from the side? And because there are layers this makes it even more possible! That's a fab idea! lol.

I also want to make a good adventure/puzzle game. Like ICO is. It's very possible with the physics, so i think that would be awesome. So far we've seen very little puzzles - and the ones we have have been very simple.

I could re-make the levels, Probably just the ones that are side on though, as these would be perfectly translated to LBP. I could probably even add the bonus pads in.2008-08-25 01:43:00

I still think the normal levels would be easy enough. But it would be like playing them from the side instead.
My girlfriends owns at Crash Bandicoot - she's so much better than i am! I don't get it! It's the only game she'll play. That or Spyro. I'm hoping LBP too when it comes out

Here is my idea on this, yeah I think one it is great to show some love to other games in your levels and yeah nice to re-make certain levels because they inspired you in some way. But do remember it is great to re-make a level of mario or something but a suggestion is to also think of ways to use it and also add to it, improve the level and add your style to the level. Don't just remake it exactly but add something that puts you into the level. Make it your level.

Plenty of people can do the moonwalk now but it is the people who take that dance move and add there style that are remembered.
