LittleBigChallenge 2! Golf Course! (20 Crowns)

Archive: 87 posts

From the News Site:

To celebrate the release of SackBoy in Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds we're putting together the first official LittleBigPlanet golf course where each hole is designed and created by the LBP community.

The best 9 holes and a driving range from North America and the most popular 9 holes and club house from Europe will be form the Official LittleBigPlanet Golf course. So not only can you win individual glory at having your hole selected, but your creation will forever be part of this course!

Every winning entry will be awarded a LittleBigPlanet prize crown, so start drafting up your designs and switch to create mode! The Challenge has officially begun!

How to take part

To enter simply create and publish your hole or Driving Range in LittleBigPlanet before midnight on April 14 2009 (PST). What makes a good hole? That's entirely up to you - think Hot Shots Golf, think LittleBigPlanet, mash the two together and see what you can come up with.

So that we can easily identify entries and if you live in the US or Canada you are going to name your level in a specific way-

"LBPGolfNA" for US entries and or ?LBPGolfCA? for Canadian entries

You can then follow this name by either ?Driving Range? or ?Par 3, 4, 5? etc, depending on how long or difficult your level is.

For example:

* ?LBPGolfCA- Par 4? is a moderately difficult, average length hole from a Canadian Creator.
* ?LBPGolfNA- Driving Range? Driving Range from US Creator.

(Note- Driving Range levels are limited to the US for this Challenge.)

We?ll then have a two week voting period from Tuesday April 14th to Monday April 27th where you can play, vote and ?heart? your favorite golf levels. Media Molecule will select the 9 winning holes and driving range for North America from eligible levels that get the best ratings during this time.

Good luck and we?ll see you on the links!

Edit: How Europeans can enter

So that we can easily identify entries, name your level "LBPGolfEU" followed by either "Clubhouse" or "Par 3, 4, 5" etc, depending on how long or difficult your level is.

For example:

"LBPGolfEU Par 4" is a moderately difficult, average length hole.
"LBPGolfEU Clubhouse" is a Clubhouse.

We?ll then have a two week voting period from Tuesday 14 April to Monday 27 April where you can play, vote and "heart" your favourite golf levels. Media Molecule will select the ultimate winning 9 holes and club house for Europe from eligible levels that get the best ratings during this time.

Read the post. It says the top 9 holes from the US and the top 9 from Europe will be crowned.

I feel your pain. Ireland is often screwed over by SCEE.

I'm surprised that this thread hasn't created much hype. Is it because it's a dull concept?

Personally, I don't really mind about getting a crown. Most accomplished creators will be a bit bogged down in getting levels ready aswell I expect. The same happened at the last time there was a thread like this......
Seems odd to me as I will be competing

What do people from Europe do? It says we can enter...but...

"LBPGolfNA" for US entries and or ?LBPGolfCA? for Canadian entries

So...yeah...Europe?

A single golf hole. If you live in the US you can do a driving range if you want and if you live in Europe you can do a clubhouse instead.

Does a level require a golf ball to be put in a hole? I mean, is it acceptable that the level has elements of golfing but is not exactly golfing? For example an adventure in the range.2009-04-02 08:53:00

What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that you can really create whatever you want as long as you keep it at least a little bit related to golf. I've created Sean Connery on his private golf course but I'm pretty sure you could make a golf RAMP if that's really what you'd want to do. My level is named LBPGolfEU Par 2 but when searching the first word you'll find all the uploaded levels anyways. There's not many of them up right now...3 last I checked. Try it...it's funny.2009-04-02 13:16:00

They are going to make 18 level pack with a driving range and clubhouse by the looks of it. Clubhouse seems pointless because you can't eat club sandwiches in a game 2009-04-05 17:25:00

im sure it was the top 20 from america and the top 20 from europe with the highest combination of hearts and ratings so hopefully the number of plays wont come into it for the people who created great levels and didnt get as much exposure

Yeah the online part of Sony (SOE) is not as prehistorical as Nintendo's online but still is way too much paleolitical imo.

Usually I haven't bothered with the results being processed in the contests but I have to say this one's just lame. Get us the results. If you plan on such a contest and have chosen a time to announce winners we shouldn't have to wait this long. At least tell us it'll be longer to wait. That said there was a LOT of golf levels and wasn't each MM employee going to play through all of them? That's time consuming.2009-06-06 14:57:00

Congrats to all the winners. Welcome to my realm. LOL

Comiz to the others who didn't make it this time. I'm sure it won't be long before you join us.

I didn't take part in this comp but I'm eager to find out what and when the next one is.
It's always great fun to create levels anyway and when there's a contest involved it makes it that bit more special.

They do always spark a bit of controversy though because we all have different views of which is best and why and the result is very rarely unanimous. I thought my level in the 2 player contest was better than the eventual winner but then I would of course.

The main thing though is to enjoy the creating and if you get something as a result then that's a bonus.

I know it's a cliche to say it's the taking part that counts and i can't say i wholeheartedly subscribe to that viewpoint, after all we all like to win at anything we do , however with this game it is particularly apt because all those levels that were created have given a lot of enjoyment to the rest of us who have been playing them so i would like to say a big thankyou and well done to everyone who entered.

I haven`t played many of the Golf levels so I can`t comment on who should have and shouldn`t have won. However, accusing someone of copying your stuff is a very harsh thing to say. Especially when the levels are based on a similar theme. Looking at the pictures you provided, I do not think the person copied you, as none of that stuff look similar.

As for the result, well I just think that whoever judged the contest obviously thought that the other levels were better than yours. There`s not much more to it than that.

I've just spent the last 3-4 hours playing every one of the winning entries in order and I'm afraid to say I have to retract my previous comment about all the entries giving enjoyment as some of those were quite simply terrible.

I did feel honoured to have a crown but now it has been totally devalued. When I think of all the hard work and effort I put into my winning level ( Balboa Park ) it makes me wonder why. I could have made a rubbish golf level and achieved the same result.

I think in future we need to know exactly who judged the contest and their reasons for selecting the winners they did.

I will put a list of all my thoughts for each winning entry below. I won't type in every level name and author. I have done them in the order as listed in the results on LittleBigWorkshop.

I will put star ratings as follows :

:star: = Rubbish ( because of being very badly made or keep breaking seriously)

Disclaimer : These are only my honest unbiased opinions as I did not take part in the contest and simply rated them as a neutral observer. However I can only assume that if indeed any actual judging did take place ( which I seriously doubt ) then the judge/s must have been ON something or simply couldn't be bothered playing them and just picked a number from a hat.

No offence to the winners as some were genuinely good. It's just a shame that the whole thing was tainted somewhat by the inclusion of lots of total rubbish.

I really hope this is not setting a precedent for the judging of future contests.

I must say, it feels very cheap winning a crown considering the standard of the some of those levels and I agree with your comments.

Number 14 was my entry. I understand your frustration as I am aware of the flaws in the level. It took me less than three days to make and I had little time to squash bugs as I needed to make the deadline. I appreciate you playing it and I may put a couple more hours into it later to make it smoother.

I was wondering why you kept playing all of these golf levels, ha ha. Every so often I'd get a "mistervista has achieved a score of XX on LBPGolfEU Par X"

I will have to take a look at these levels later today.

Ouch! I know the level was a little buggy, but I didn't realize that doing something new and intriguing was worth 1 star... (At least 2... ) To be honest, I spent two weeks developing the level, and that rating makes me kinda sad. I understand that it's your opinion, but what went wrong? Care to elaborate?

Sorry , no offence intended. I didn't note down every detail on every level because it would have made the post far too long.

Anyway I just played it several more times and it broke twice again. For a start it's a bit unclear where and what to grab as it shows 3 places at the beginning but I can only find 2, jumping to set the power and standing makes the club appear and plays the shot.

The first time I played again the ball went down into the dip and the pod thing followed it but went too low and I couldn't even see the white bar that moves up and down ( it's also very unclear what position you need to choose to have that in with regards to where the club appears ) and no matter how I tried I couldn't get the ball up the slope again.

Second time I just pressed it and hoped for the best and the first shot actually cleared the slope but when I tried to play the next shot the club hit the top of the ball and broke off completely and just left the shaft of the club swinging wildly backwards and forwards and it wouldn't let me select a new club.

I did manage to finish once but that was down to pure blind luck. I had no idea what I was doing , I just grabbed and it sort of got the ball to the hole eventually although I felt I'd had nothing to do with it as at no stage did I have any control over it.

NOOO Fullgorr, great job man!! I thought I had a good shot at this. I'm never getting a crown, but that's cool because I see myself retiring after my deja boom saga is over. CRIES2009-07-09 05:55:00
