A list of level categories - genres, tags, content - for a future "browsing" system

Archive: 8 posts

Many people here agree that LBP should feature an additional bit of info that publishers should define when they create a level - You should be required to choose from a list of pre-defined category tags. As a player, you can then browse by category.

Perhaps these tags have their own categories, and you choose one from each that's appropriate. For example, let's say you've just published LittleDeadSpace 3 - you choose a "Genre" tag (horror), a "Content" tag (videogame remake), and a difficulty tag (3/5). I'm not sure the best way to go, but that's why I'm pitching a brainstorming to the community. What should be in these tags?

I'll get us started:

Genre
Horror, Action, Racing, Adventure, RPG, Puzzle, Music, Survival... Not sure how to implement "Platformer", as they're all kind of platformers.

Difficulty
Every level should be required to define a difficulty. I love in Rock Band quick play mode, how every single song lists a scale of 0-6 difficulty for each instrument. Perfect.

Content
I think there should be a SIZEABLE list of content tags. As I try to come up with them, many fit tags that are currently in the tagging system. But I do think that you should be able to choose from certain tags for your level:
Atmospheric
Artistic
Story
Comedy
Vehicle(s)
Holiday
Epic
a MUST-HAVE: Remake tags. You should be able to define if your level is adapted from/a parody of another videogame, tv show, book, or movie. "Adaptation", or "Remake" perhaps. I'm absolutely sure this would be one of the most popular tags. Maybe if you choose this tag, you can further define it as "book", "movie", "tv show", or "videogame".

so, so, so many more...

What I'd love to do is be able to compile a list that the community creates, and submit it to Mm. The concept of having 3 separate tag categories (Tagegories?) is my own, and I'm sure there are better systems waiting to be discovered, so by all means - every idea is welcome.

YES.

I would simply see this as:

Genre:
Difficulty:
Tags:

It's quick, simple and descriptive enough.

Tags should be FREE. True tags. Just like any serious user content based websites.

i would like to see MM make a tag system like this. it would make finding levels easier and it might prevent people from rating a level badly because they don't like the genre/difficulty.

the only problem would be that not everyone would use that tags properly and would set it up to get the most hits.

I agree. The inherent problem with this system is that it's highly-exploitable. Once a few particular tags turn out to be the most popular, creators will inevitably use those tags on their levels, whether they're appropriate or not.

Which begs for a built-in solution. There needs to be some way for the level to be easily "punished" for lying about tags, or exploiting popular tags, without having to be constantly regulated by Mm mods. I'd hate to have to ask ANOTHER question at the end of each play-through of a level, such as "Are the publisher's tags accurate?", but this is one way for the community to keep creators honest.

This is irrelevant guys. A free tag system would work good, just like everywhere else.

Do you seriously think there isn't tag abuse on Youtube? Yet it works. There's ALWAYS exploitation. They can also exploit the present system anyways.

No, seriously it's not a issue because their will always be dishonest people. You can't build a strong system considering those people i'm sorry.

I completely agree with you. This would be great for finding levels, because right now you can only find new levels, highest rated (Which are mainly prize bubble levels! ) and cool levels. If I run out of levels to play, or don't want to use the new levels, highest rated, etc. ones, I have to actually know what I want to play. If I want to play a good shooter, I might have to type in a shooting games name, like Half-Life, or Call of Duty, and most of the time, the levels that appear are terrible. With this I could be bored, and want to play an easy atmospheric horror, and viola, I'm playing one.

There should also be a way to search by rating.

the problem with free tagging is that browsing would become chaotic. If you could browse a list of tags, but they were all freely-created - The list would be nearly endless, and you'd have a ton of almost-identical ones like "horror" and "terror" and "scary" and "frightening". You'd end up, more than anything else, just adding another searchable category, rather than a true browse function. Ever use grooveshark.com?

I imagine being able to browse a list of all the categories, creating filters of which ones you want to see, and getting lists of all the levels within, which can then be sorted by play count, heart count, rating, date first published, etc. It really REALLY needs to be list-based. Keep the old globe system for cool levels, sure, why not - but a proper browse feature would need to ditch this, and it would also need to have a solid list of categories that would manage to include all levels. Obviously this means the inevitable "misc" category, but this is the reason I'm offering up the brainstorm - what would this list need to include?

Some blogging sites offer up free tagging, but they also include lists of categories and common tags, and will show you "auto-complete" options if what you're typing in is similar to existing tags. It makes sense to have categories if you want the universe to be interconnected, to keep things clean. I think if there was a huge list of pre-defined tags, which you could then search through to find what you wanted, this would help create a stronger community in the long run than free-for-all self-tagging.

I'd like to post this from another thread I just posted in:

Yes, I think we all agree:

There is no way to get consistant plays on your level. That is the problem.

What can we do about it:

-cannot rate until finished
- 1 week of cool levels upped to 2 months or 5000 plays, whichever is longer

Have genres, each with a randomised level selection, with the option of filters like *difficulty 4+ stars* or *levels I haven't played* etc.

Thus, if you like puzzle levels, you can enter the puzzle genre of levels, and filter out all levels with H4H in the title, all the levels you have finished, and all the levels with less than 3 stars, 50 hearts, etc.

Then you get a randomised list of levels that fit the criterea, with a refresh button to replace the levels with more random ones.

So your epic 130 hour+ level that is perfect and burried at the bottom of the pile can be seen by people, played, on a regular basis. Then they could have a levels of the week column, where 100 levels selected by MM that are in a genre have exposure for one week. They are only aligebile again in 2 months.

Also, we definately need a sizeable list of filters. The only part of the Share proccess that works, is that you can accurately search an author, and the heart system, where you can generally find good levels in a friends hearted list.

Hope you agree too!
