Spoooky pinball (spotlighted!!!) Updated with monster pack!!!

Archive: 27 posts

Just wanted to put this level out there to see what people think. It's a pinball
level with a spooky atmosphere. It has everything a pinball game should. What
I mainly need to know is if I should scrap the intro. I'm on the fence about this
because after the first play it might detract from the flow.

Just a quick note: There is another version of this pinball without the intro. It's called Monster Pinball. If anybody wants to leave feedback on that one, leave it in this thread. Thanks.

Totally awesome dude! I like how you have 4 balls instead of 3, and there are lots of flippers. I loooooove the flippers, heh. Actually I thought the intro was good. It explained the rules and added to the atmosphere. Great job!2009-03-29 02:56:00

I'm a big fan of the pinball games in LBP, so I had to give this one a go. Here are my thoughts:

Excellent visuals. There was quite a bit going on here. You did a nice job with all the ball obstacles and lighting.

I think you may be right about the into, however - the thing about pinball games... people play them many times. And after the first or second time, the intro seems to get in the way, although it's kind of cool the first time. You may want to think of a way of skipping it, or do what many of the other creators have done by making a quick into screen that displays the instructions with an R1 to begin.

Another thing I noticed which is a slightly bigger issue - the bones you have overlaying the paddles. The bones give an illusion that the paddles are longer than they really are, which means when you hit the ball sometimes you're a little bit late hitting the trigger. I would suggest making these bones slightly smaller (although it's your call obviously. I've spent MANY hours playing Thegide's Asteroid Pinball and Wexfordian's Pinball Wizard over the last month and didn't notice the same issue).

Great job, however - I gave it 4 stars and a heart.

I wouldn't mind if you checked out my Splat Invaders II: The Caverns of Splat Level.

I agree about the bone thing, CC. (Check out my Neon level! ;p)2009-03-29 03:28:00

Sounds intresting, might have a look if I go on LBP sometime, haven't been on for a while though.

EDIT: Played it now; very good atmosphere. Intro was perfect, you should definately leave it in. Gameplay had no particular faults other than the bone decorations going longer than the flippers- easily fixable. Quite a fun level overall aswell: 5 stars and hearted.

thanks for the heads up on the flippers. I had them bones on there from the get go, and I played the stupid thing so much during testing that I didn't even realize the problem. anyways I've fixed, and republished it. As for the intro I think I will publish a second level
without the intro, but it might take me awhile because it will take a considerable amount of time, and I'm working on something new that I don't want to lose steam on. thanks again for the input.

Good looking level...but not sure about the gameplay. I had a hard time finding anything to aim for. The top left paddle has absolutely nowhere to go as far as I can tell. And most of my shots off the bottom right paddle went behind another object then in the gutter. I couldn't really even see what was happening.

I tried 3 times and would have tried many more were it not for the long intro. It's a great looking intro the first time, but I just don't want to wait to play.

Gorgeous table though, so thumbs up to the aesthetics.

I just went back and tried this again, and the paddles definately seem to work better (I actually put a 5 star on it this time. Nice work!)

I agree with Frizby on the beginning... at some point you should really change the beginning. I love it.... but man, if you're trying to play it over and over again it's a long time until you start the game.

One other thing that could probably improve playability is to take the camera on the ball out a bit (could help with Frizby's complaint above also). Since the pinball table is so big, it's a little hard to tell what's going on.

Nice, I'll look at this later today. I don't mind waiting for the intro at the start, it's good for the atmosphere.

sorry about the camera but it's already zoomed all the way out. as for the where to aim with the top flipper it's mainly to get the multiball going. you just have to shoot it right where the arrows point. you have to get it pretty spot on as I didn't want it to be to easy.
I am going to publish a level without the intro but it might take me some time. When I do I'll
let every body know. thanks for the feedback though as I greatly value everyone's opinion.

Just checked it out and it's pretty cool! I love the stickers you used and the bones on the flippers are a nice touch. I didn't mind the intro at first but I think it's a good idea to do one without it - for the pinball addict who like to just hit the replay and drop right back in.

The camera thing is a little distracting but you already know about that.

Overall a really fun pinball level! I gave it 4 stars and will play it again.

Ive added more scoring options up top. as for the bottom not much I can do there accept for give advice. If your constantly hitting it down the gutter your hitting the flipper to late.
there are arrows pointing to the intended ramp for that flipper, and also you can get the ball back up top with that flipper. you just have to play around. As for the intro I'll have time this weekend to fix.

What I would do (to skip the intro) is destroy the entrance as soon as you come out, and spawn an active checkpoint (lifetime=infinite) and put a grab switch on the cage, and if you grab it it kills you and you spawn at the table. (That's just me though.)2009-04-05 13:08:00

I've actually published another level without the intro, and a reworked ending. thanks though.

Then click "go advanced" and you should be able to change the title of your thread.

Thanks zowllie and morgana. It's kind of embarrassing, but for me it saves time to ask instead of fooling around forever. thanks again.2009-04-21 00:26:00

also check out my fully automated machine.

Wait... Did you comment on my level: "Free LCD counter and display!!!" But delete the comment? A few months ago I got a comment on my LCD display level and it was about a "fully automated machine" level for lazy people, and it had an LCD display in it too. After I played it, I went back to the comments on my level and it was deleted. Was that you...?

Sorry, I don't have any feedback on your level 'cause my PS3's blu-ray laser died so I can't play LBP until Sony sends me a new one...

That's me, but I don't remember deleting the comment. I never do that. Whatever it was it wasn't bad as I don't leave that kind of stuff on peoples levels. It's counterproductive. Anyways if you get your ps3 back check out the pinball. If you like pinball you might enjoy.

Updated this today with the monster pack. I've put in a music selection device, and added a few decorations. Also changed the ending a bit. I'VE ONLY CHANGED THE ONE WITHOUT THE INTRO. check it out!2009-05-22 23:36:00

I just played your level called "Spoooky pinball". Very, very nice. A very good idea, creating a pinball game with littlebigplanet.

Now the things i liked:
* The music selection thing
* The beginning, with the skeleton car.
* The light effects
* The atmosphere was great, however sometimes it looked a bit bland
* A very well made pinball machine clone
* The number that shows how many balls you have left is nice. However, why don't you keep it in the bottom-right area of the screen using some kind device that tracks the ball and moves the ball-count accordingly?

And the things i did not like:
* The camera was sometimes quite jumpy. Mostly when i shot the ball into the green hole.
* I didn't get any indication when my score increased. It would make it a bit more fun, in my opinion. Something like a sound-effect or a numeric counter like the ball-count you have in the bottom-right, but with 8 numbers.

Some tips:
* Why don't you use dark matter or wood to restrict the player's movement horizontally, so that it doesn't matter when you touch the controller?
* The R1 button controls both flippers. Why not make a mini room with two buttons, one that moves the left flipper and one the right, and then use the left control stick to control the flippers? Left for left flipper, right for right flipper? - And then connect the part that restricts the player's movement horizontally to the button room? Or use two motion sensors instead of buttons.

I've given it five stars, and tagged it with 'brilliant', because it was very clever to make that. I hope you give tips like the ones i gave here on my levels as well.

I'm going to post feedback on the other levels soon, but right now, i've got to eat dinner.
