Hey, what's goin' on over in 'dis thread? *waves* I got into a conversation about the Universe, today... Unfortunately, my opinion on this subject is just theoretical. Not that my opinion holds any less substance than anyone elses opinion since there's really no way to prove the things we are discussing and the numbers we're basing it on are just that: numbers. Math is a man-made philosophy. If we send a satellite out into space and it's found by an alien race, would they know what the markings on it meant? Our language isn't univeral. Anyway, I'm getting off track here but the thought of alternate universes has been a long-time subject that's sat in the back of my mind since, I started thinking about things besides toy cars and Happy Meals. When you start talking about things like this, it's easy to get off-track because when you start talking about the Simulation Theory, you start to wonder how you can even define existence, itself. What/who/how we were created is another issue that would probably run into the religious theories that are so popular and I'm not going to lead things into that direction. I'm just wondering... if we are just a simulation, what is the "real" world like? The universe. Atmosphere. Gravity. Solid/liquid/gases. Are these just concepts created by someone/something? Is the real world anything at all like what we have come to think of our world as being? When we "die", do we "awaken" from this simulation like a 80 or so year long coma? Are our "awakened" selves chuckling at the things that this world/simulation is doing? Dying in the name of things that don't really exist? It really makes you wonder and it's so much easier to be ignorant about it all... to just not think about it... but on the other hand, it's not easy to ignore it. When I think about what's going to happen to me when I die, I can never rest easy because I just can't blindly believe in what one person or what one group of people say. NO ONE knows. I've probably veered way off-topic here so, let me try to get back to the topic at hand... How fragile is our existence here? Would the world just float away if our gravitational axis was altered in the slightest? Is a giant asteroid going to set us on a path straight into the sun? **** if I know but again, it's all just theory... you and I can't even provide sources to base our opinions on because, again, it's all theoretical. Where are those numbers coming from? Even though they don't really mean anything when it comes down to it but... is 10^37 actually an exact number? Or is that 10^37 + 1? I can imagine scientist wasting their entire lives researching this... just coming to the same conclusion that we all do. There are no answers. What do you guys think? =) | 2009-01-26 21:26:00 Author: Comatoes Posts: 76 |

I can imagine scientist wasting their entire lives researching this... just coming to the same conclusion that we all do. There are no answers. What do you guys think? =) logically in my opinion i think its highly unlikely that there is any simulation or any alternate reality. I think we are extremely lucky that the earth is at the proximity to the sun that it is, creating a perfect living atmosphere. I don't mind this but when we die....we're dead thats it. Alot of people don't want to believe that because its scary but i accept it because its logical. People create religion and other theories to both control behaivor and people and to calm them down about the unfortunate ending that we all must face. the only thing we can leave behind us is our legacy. about the fragility of us, yes we are quite fragile. a meteor hits us we're dead. we eventually will probably get sucked into a blackhole anyways, very very far down the road. or who knows maybe when the polar caps shift its going to cause giagantic diasasters and wipe us all out or most of us (2012). i also kind of have a theory that there is a giant black hole at the center of the universe that everything revolves around and eventually gets sucked into, and when everything is in it... it explodes (aka big bang) but what is really a question to ponder is...what is the universe...what is space......what in the heck is the universe expanding into ....how is it expanding...whats on the other side | 2009-01-26 21:32:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |

What do you guys think? =) Do you REALLY want to know what I think? Life's a garden. Dig it. Really, what I want to know about the Universe is HOW is a Universe expanding? I thought a universe was supposed to be infinite, but apparently it isn't. Or maybe our theories are ALL wrong about space. Like our old theory of the world being flat, and if you go too far you fall off. And how we used to think Gods lived in our mountains and all had affairs with eachother and went to war. I personally think that the Universe doesn't actually exist. I don't like the term the universe. Because when I think about the universe, I think of EVERYTHING, and if there is only ONE universe (which may be untrue) how can something infinite grow bigger? I think our current definition of the UNIVERSE is bad, and it really starts to hurt my brain when I think too hard about it...Ow. What is the universe? Because we don't know that there aren't far out galaxies that we can't see with current technology. We just assume that all we see is all there is. But that isn't the case. We could be separated by other galaxy clusters by Billions and billions of light years that we simply will never see unless we have the time to come up with that much technology. One thing that makes my brain hurt is Dark Matter. It isn't made up of atoms, so what is it? There is so much stuff in the universe that we don't know about. Is it possible that dark matter is...well..nothing? | 2009-01-26 21:34:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |

logically in my opinion i think its highly unlikely that there is any simulation or any alternate reality. I think we are extremely lucky that the earth is at the proximity to the sun that it is, creating a perfect living atmosphere. Highly unlikely. ...but just as unlikely as the theory that our universe was created by chance with a Big Bang and our proximity to the Sun was luckily just in the right orbit to keep us from freezing/burning. I don't mind this but when we die....we're dead thats it. Alot of people don't want to believe that because its scary but i accept it because its logical. People create religion and other theories to both control behaivor and people and to calm them down about the unfortunate ending that we all must face. I agree that people create religion to control behavior but at the same time, religion has created some of the most horrible conflicts in humanity's history. Calm them down, though? I see what you mean... it gives people something to hope for besides nothingness when we die. There's really no proof that they're wrong and there's no proof that you're wrong, either. What you say at the end of your post is "what is the universe" and "what is space." Why can't that same pondering be put forth to death? What is death? What is existence, itself? the only thing we can leave behind us is our legacy. about the fragility of us, yes we are quite fragile. a meteor hits us we're dead. we eventually will probably get sucked into a blackhole anyways, very very far down the road. We leave behind our legacy, yeah... we leave behind our carbon footprint... we leave behind our keys... whatever. What I was talking about with fragility was more specifically aimed towards the Earth's gravitational pull being thrown out of orbit. i also kind of have a theory that there is a giant black hole at the center of the universe that everything revolves around and eventually gets sucked into, and when everything is in it... it explodes (aka big bang) Just as good a theory as any other... but what is really a question to ponder is...what is the universe...what is space......what in the heck is the universe expanding into ....how is it expanding...whats on the other side Exactly... that's the fun stuff we're talking about. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Do you REALLY want to know what I think? I always like to hear what people think. Life's a garden. Dig it. Lol... good life motto. For Pete sakes, you're more in-depth than I once, thought. This is what I'm talking about. The mysteries of existence and I love how almost everything in life is defined. Everything has a meaning and a set procedure. ...but when it comes right down to it. What the heck does it all mean? Is what we're doing actually happening? Are we just a simulation like I mentioned? I know it sounds Matrix-ey but hey, this stuff was discussed before the Wachowski brothers were even born. Dark Matter... now that's a fun subject. I don't think it's nothing... it's obviously a floating object in LBP that you can attach things to. Kudos to you two for engaging in this conversation. | 2009-01-26 23:24:00 Author: Comatoes Posts: 76 |
Has anyone ever thought that there are TWO facts that may or may not be true? One, that everything was once nothing, or Two, that everything existed for all time. Either there was a start to ANYTHING that mysteriously appeared out of the brink of nothing- or there IS or beginning, and everything somehow always existed... but how? So, either everything was once nothing, or everything always was.. | 2009-01-26 23:27:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |

@ awesome, very true thinking about it like that...think how insane it sounds now that the world is flat...imagine in a few hundred years from what our theories will sound like...as technology progresses with time and looking back at previous data we always find out how wrong we were and make small steps to unlocking the giagantic secrets the "universe" contains.. one thing i think is really cool is dark matter i think....its pretty much the anti to what ever exsists like the other side of the equation.....i wish i remembered more about it, you guys would love the radio show coast to coast AM its on really late at night and they have some really smart people on there talking about cool stuff like this, I havnt listened to it in a couple years but that was my favorite radio show of all time. i wish i remembered more about dark matter...or perhaps it was called something else...it was a really cool principle / idea though. and also cool fact...we have proven that space / time is universally linked...they had two atomic clocks set obviously for the same exact time...one was on the ground and one went up w/ a pilot of a jet that flew very fast (sorry for being scarce on facts / details i dont remember) and when he landed they compared the two...and they were off the one that was in the jet was behind the other one (just barely behind) but still behind @rock i think i've heard both those theories before i know a lot of people think that everything has always existed....it would make sense if the big bang theory is true and its a forever repeating cycle....everything would just keep getting recycled and shot back out but in a slightly different way... i think steven hawking actually recently just "proved" that going in a black hole does not indeed shoot you to some unknown galaxy but instead everything kind of just sits in there and then it is shot back out in a slightly different form | 2009-01-26 23:53:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
What's this? An important discussion on my spam can? The only way to **** with the system is to bring it down from the inside. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Has anyone ever thought that there are TWO facts that may or may not be true? One, that everything was once nothing, or Two, that everything existed for all time. Good thoughts... I have definitely heard of and discussed many times the thought that our universe did not exist at one point or another and it was created by something but never have I actually talked about the thought that maybe everything has always been here... there was no beginning, after all. Maybe, there is no beginning and there is no end. Is it possible for something to have no beginning? Crazy stuff. Also, if the universe is infinite... maybe there really is no end and no beginning since, you know, infinity never ends and there's no way to determine the beginning of infinity. *brain fizzles* - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - imagine in a few hundred years from what our theories will sound like...as technology progresses with time and looking back at previous data we always find out how wrong we were *explodes* I was thinking the same thing... with the rate that technology and information has progressed in the last ten or fifteen years alone, imagine what we'll know in a hundred, a thousand, ten-thousand years from now. Will the very questions we're asking right now be common knowledge? Will we be learning about the proven theory of relativity in elementary school? Will Stephen Hawking's books be book reports we read to our colleagues in kindergarten? It's astonishing to think about... Kind of related video: http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=36917 You should watch it... it's mind blowing stuff. i think steven hawking actually recently just "proved" that going in a black hole does not indeed shoot you to some unknown galaxy but instead everything kind of just sits in there and then it is shot back out in a slightly different form O RLY? | 2009-01-27 00:19:00 Author: Comatoes Posts: 76 |
Ya, I saw it on BBC--Science or CNN -- Science..It was a few weeks ago...and it kind of supported my theory of the whole black hole in the center / big bang...well more so the big bang...well i guess both... i was reading these science forums before and I think some person was trying to say its impossible for one to be at the center because there is no center but really, IDK how much you can say 100% | 2009-01-27 00:21:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |

Good thoughts... Maybe, there is no beginning and there is no end. Is it possible for something to have no beginning? Crazy stuff. I always imagined that there was something that created the universe. Then I recently started thinking.... where did that original something come from.... did something else create it? Then I kept thinking... that could just go on forever. No matter what theory the origin of wherever the universe did come from there was always something before it.... and it would be an infinite cycle of possibilities of beginnings leading all the way back to what......nothing? Or something? So yeah... I'm thinking it has to be possible something has no beginning, as to if it is the universe.... or something else thats the question. | 2009-01-27 00:46:00 Author: Doctor Ramatool Posts: 189 |

I figure Clank is depressed in real life since he's just been upset here and such... Shame, I wish he was better... and I'm not just saying that cause he's looking at this thread right now . And I wasn't talking about that ham, but I have heard that theory- however, if Einstein's equation of E=mc2 is correct, then matter and energy are the same substance. o_0 Which I COULD use for my long time travel theory that runs on Einstein's theories that I saw on the science channel, but only if you want me too . | 2009-01-27 01:08:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |

Time slows down as you speed up Awesomemans... as theorized by Einstein. its really been proven as i posted before....they took two atomic clocks set at the same time obviously....one was left on the ground. the other was taken up into a jet and flown as fast as it would go....when it landed the one that was in the jet was SLIGHTLY behind the one that was left on the ground. proving that indeed time does slow the faster you go | 2009-01-27 01:22:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |

Einstein theorized that time exists as blankets, one above the other. the present is here, the past is below, the future above, and so on throughout all infinity. He also proposed that matter creates "gaps" and "hills" in the space time continum. So, the larger a piece of matter, the larger the dent. Some propose that, by gathering enough matter into a single spot, we can create a large enough hill to "reach" another space time "blanket". If both blankets are generating the matter, we COULD create a window to another period in time- time travel. However, where are we going to get enough matter to POSSIBLY create this gap? E=MC2 All elementary school kids know it, but few know WHAT it means. Energy is equal to matter times the speed of light squared. Energy... and matter are the SAME THING. According to Einstein. Since energy and matter seem to be the same substance, if we gather enough energy... we MIGHT be able to create a time travel portal- if Einstein is correct. However, we can't travel whenever- ONLY as long as the machine is on. If the machine stops at ANY point in time, there is NOTHING to create the gap in space time, as the energy isn't released, and thus, we won't be able to see the past- only the future people of the future can see the past as the beginning of the switch. Providing, of course, that such a machine doesn't destroy the universe :/. | 2009-01-27 01:29:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
What you said was that because Energy equals Mass times the speed of light squared that Energy IS Matter? Maybe Einstein said this somewhere else, but not in that equation. Perhaps I understood you, but if Energy is Mass because E=MC^2, then X would be Y in an equation like X=YZ^2 Energy is not matter. | 2009-01-27 01:37:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |

That's what would happen if the otters wanted to take over the world. You remind me of a video where there's some sea otters holding hands... I wouldn't have watched it all if it hadn't have been for all the young children laughing hysterically at what was happening. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - @universe conversation: This has just been one big social experiment to see if it was possible to hold a semi-intelligent conversation in a thread that's meant for posts that hold very little substance.
