LBPC Crown Contest #3 - Synched Up!

Presumably he just kept the level simple enough to avoid any noticable synchronization problems.

Ah, So I think I found my answer for my level. "Keep it simple"
Because I would have no idea how to deal with the lag you guys been talking about.
what your saying sounds unfixable. so hopefully i can just avoid it by keeping things simple enough...

How important is the level name? OR is the name supposed to be just LBPC3? I suck at naming things.

Another question -- Does it have to be multiplayer or can it be designed for one player?

The name has not great importance, but should relate to the theme of your level, just as the badge, AND it must have the (LBPC3) tag.
I really suggest to make a single player experience as the game will surely lag in multiplayer.		2011-08-13 07:25:00

It's not only about lights, but also platforms, whatever has "dynamics" in your level must move in sync with the music.

So if you cannot synch EVERY single light, decoration, etc, I don't suppose it would matter so long as the majority of the level is.

I'm very close to completion now, with three notches left on thermo and all but ending scene done. I'm a little worried about the amount of playtime I have atm lol!

Guidelines say 3-5 minutes of gameplay. Well besides cutscenes, which are a short and I wouldn't count as gameplay anyway, I have about ten minutes worth of gameplay (with my husband, who is not so skilled at gaming, playing for me) in the level. Would this be frowned upon? :/		2011-08-15 11:21:00

No, the length won't be a problem rial.
We assumed that 3-5 minutes would have worked in the best way to avoid out of synch problems.

can the level be quite difficult, say about as hard as comphermc's roller INC?
oh, and can we use other people's musac - obviously giving them credit for it.
I'd say mine's about half done by now
-however there isn't much background sync - only the obstacles. oh well.

Ok, but you can win a Crown with their song, and we would like to avoid any kind of jealousy.
Difficulty is a design choice we will respect until the level is not badly balanced and unfinishable.

Ugh.. The sync is the hardest part and I thought it would be the easiest... Just want to forwarn people that if your game has a lot going on, it will probably get out of sync.. Ive tried bateries on music sequencer, a timer, bateries on another sequencer and tried to sync it with the mucic sequencer and tags on both.. None of those work. It's extremely frusrating.

Yeah I know this is really disheartening... I was so excited about how perfectly everything was going and syncing perfectly in my level. Then I get 3/4 of my level finished only to find out about this dreaded inherent sync issue of the LBP2 music sequencer. *sigh. I think this contest is great! Now some good levels with visual effects synched to music have been made and I'm sure more will be published soon. I want to play them all. I like seeing anything synched to music. I will publish my new level for the contest in the next few days. I could publish it now but I'm just waiting for the right time. that sucks. I think the judges will know to play most levels as single player otherwise lag is evident. I hope you can fix the problems, if not I can help. I'm good with logic. friend me if you got any questions. Also, is it ok if I leave an open beta but update it every day or so before the deadline? On a side note, minus the crazy annoying inherent synching issues... this is a great competition idea. Whoever thought of this one is especially awesome! Yeah. This really is a great idea! I had a fantastic idea, and it was shaping up real nice, but it wasn't the issues of syncing, but of graphical bugs making everything muddled and ugly. So I redesigned the whole thing to similar results, and by the third redesign, my heart wasn't into it anymore.

I fixed the syncing bug by constantly re syncing every 4 beats. So there was no (visible) issue of being out of sync.		2011-08-20 10:41:00

Just a little note that my level is now finished and published - It's called Rhythm Ruins, and tbh I'm so glad to have done with it lol! It's been the bane of my life for the last three weeks. But still a great challenge contest crew - thanks so much for running a competition that made me salivate at the thought!

Hey, i'm NEW! And I have an entry to the contest ( ( .:Visual Style Deceptive:. (LBPC3) )....and since I was curious, and played about 30 other entries to this contest, i'd say my chances are pretty slim haha. The music kind of took over my thought process when I was creating. I hope you feel the vibes i'm sendin'. Anyway, even if it gets banished to the far corners of "sackland", I hope you enjoy the time you spend with it. I loved the style of it so much, I decided to make extended versions...that thermometer is unforgiving...so much yelling.

On a side note, these contests are a great idea! It gets thought out levels out there, and let's little-er known levels who just so happen to fit the theme, a chance to see daylight! Good chance I won't be able to get my level done it time.
I used the first two weeks just idea planing. and has taken me a week
to get the mini-game logic for the beginning of my level done...
So how much of my level is done??... Not much... (>.>)
But I've always been a last Minute wonder, so there still is a small chance I could get the level done...
but I'd not count on it... really to bad.. I really wanted to get a level made for this contest. :/

As point 5 of building requirements says and as I repeated more than once in this thread

Then I guess mine is Perfect right now? ^.^ the level contains gameplay (Platformer 4-5 mins) and the lights are Synchronized with the Music. There is just a missing thing there is no Synchronized Object Movement with the music (Out of dancers) but I hope That wont be a big problem

I'd simply say read the rules and if you don't understand the rules, then get someone to read them to you. I'd let you make your level and when it's wrong, disqualify it. In any other contest or sweepstakes IRL do you get to pester the makers of said contest about the rules? No. When McDonald's runs their Monopoly game can you call up McDonalds CEO and tell him "I know it says I have to have 3 cheeseburger stickers to win, but I have 2 cheeseburger stickers and an apple pie sticker, can I still win?" No! Get out of my store knucklehead!

The purpose of the contest crew, the reason itself it was created, was to make people happy.
I imagine all the efforts behind a level, the time, the sweat, the headaches, if 10 minutes a day of my time replying here can just avoid people to be disqualified and be bitter, then why shouldn't I do it?
Yeah, sometimes I facepalm and smile, but that's just part of the role, it's really worse for me to disqualify someone than help him with the guidelines.
I hate to disqualify a level, even if it reduces the workload of the judges.
Me and the others don't want to get bitter or having people sad.

yeah I get your point and understand, but for me personally, I can't stand when people ask the same thing over and over and over and still get it wrong. I check back in here periodically to see if someone has posted their finished masterpiece for me to play and more often than not it's:
knucklehead#1-- "ok, can it just be like you stand in one spot and the lights flash to the music"
Omega: "no, you have to have 3-5 minutes of gameplay per the contest guidelines. Have fun creating."
knucklehead#1two days later: "hmm, Ok, so can it be like holograms turning on and off and it's a movie. cause I'm already almost finished"

I can only say that we need a month to refine the rules, to find a twist to not make things obvious, to offer a balanced challenge, to have you focused on one aspect of the creating experience.
Those rules can be read in 5 minutes more or less, 10 minutes if English is not your first language.
It's common knowledge than reading a thing 3 times at loud voice sticks what you've read in your head
And I'm here to help you guys with any kind of doubt, someone messed a level and made a videoclip without gameplay, asked me to replace it and there was no problem.

Aloha, I caught winf of this contest a little late >.< Finallly a challenge within my creative lmits!
The very first LBP2 level I made was music/light sync, but a video.. hmm 8 days.. I have some
ideas and a sackbot/level theme on standby.

I have to say, out ot the 30 levels that appear when I search text LBPC3 maybe only about 5
seem legit to me(within creation guidelines for contest). And the majoriity of the 30 are pure
****.. (not to my liking) I've played them all.

I'm aiming for the top 3.. though I don't expect to win due to gameplay being not my specialty..
Anyway GL to those 5 levels that stand out IMO..

Oh yeah and the guidelines for the judges seem great! I was worried at first that it would be a
popularity contest, like the ones w/ the most plays/hearts on cool levels.. LOL
That would completely ruin it as my creations don't really get much attention/plays...

Your there to enjoy it (or not) as a regular level. My particular level is more based on the gameplay and visuals than the sync.. because its hard to sync because of the gameplay and visuals So I might bail out for that anyway.. It's pretty annoying having an unfixable problem brought up in half the reviews.. but if it is the gameplay and visuals that suck then ok..

Ok, so, it's up to the judges to decide.
Bonner for example takes fun at the contests like even Sladen-Bob did...that's ok, we play their levels and have a laugh, they won't win anything but will grant some smiles.
We take our works seriously, it's up to us to pick up a winner.

I really am thinking that next rules will have a paragraph about unfair behaviour.
Whoever bashes another competitor's level will be disqualified.
That's not the spirit I want to see here guys.
If you don't like a level, keep it for you, since your words are just enbittering and won't affect our judging in any way.
Keep this contests clean and fair!!!

I Kinda disagree with you a little bit. Except the part about people calling your or anyone's level utter pound sign,exclamation point, and sign, question mark. That's just rude and obnoxious. That being said, I'm not there to play your level as a "regular" level. If it has the "(LBPC3)" in the title, it is not a regular level, it's a contest entry. If I play a contest entry then I might be more inclined to point out that a certain portion doesn't meet guidelines, so that the author could edit it if they so choose. Maybe they misread the rules, I don't know. I'm sure that's not what you're(not your) getting though or you wouldn't be so heated, or so it seemed in your post. If I play a level and it's just lights whizzing by overhead....I just got an idea. I wonder if...sorry, A.D.D. Where was I? Oh right, Your level is going to be under more scrutiny because it's a contest entry and not a "Regular" level. Some people, whether they are judges or not are going to judge it on the guidlines and that's fair. In essence, you're making a proclamation via "(LBPC3)" that your level meets the requirements. With that, I can't wait to play it. It looks cool. And, I'll only rate it on visuals and what not and not the contest guidelines.

I'm not trying to argue either and I suppose what you said makes a lot of sense. I'm just saying (and this is an extreme case) that some may neutral rate and maybe even boo a level they enjoyed but was out of sync -_- I just get frustrated because of the problems I have had with my level.. The desync, (cant render) exclamation marks and freezing of people systems. Its just been a hassle and if I make even the slightest change it acts weird. Its a challenging criteria and even monster said in remixed that something az simple as opening popit could cause de sync but several entries have overcome this very well. Like Rialrees. I quite enjoyed your level Dortr! And I found it to be well within the guidelines But these levels with no game play, and no sync have to be pointed out so they can have a chance to amend the problem before it is too late. I hate going off a topic but my two cents:

I have seen a few of the other contest levels. They are pretty cool. I don't see why so many people here try to hate on each others levels. I don't think this competition is meant to stress people out. Rather it is about having FUN building! I had fun! Hope you guys do too.

You never know maybe that guy you hate on now COULD HAVE BEEN the guy to help you with your next level.

and as a final question, post-contest; can we extend a level, play around with it a bit and submit it as a non-contest level?

The contest has been a fascinating excuse to delve into the sticky depths of LBP2's engine. Unfortunately, it seems that I have balanced my level much too close to the red line: it works in offline play but seems to have random anomalies when connected to PSN. It feels like I've spent weeks jettisoning cargo just to keep this ship afloat, but it looks like I'll have to throw a few more things overboard to ensure stability for online players.

So.. Here i am. Introducing my new Level. CALLED LBPC3 - Pulse of Night
So.. I co-Created it with Itachix00. I tried to make ''unique'' visuals and some bit harder gameplay, but still playable...
Then everybody says like: "Too hard" "More Checkpoints" blah blah blah..
I mean REALLY guys! If it is hard, try again. I rarely meet people that understand the rule : "Rate the level, not your skills".
This level was my first ever made music-Hard-metropolis level, and then everybody comes to cry to comments...
I used like a month to make it, and people just try to find bad things :'(

Curiously, when I uploaded my level some of the score givers were producing black score numbers that weren't being attributed to the player. I went back to play my unpublished level and two older copies of the level where the score givers had worked: they all had black score numbers as well!

I tried the obvious solution of running the input to each score giver through an AND gate connected to a controlinator's active output. This seems to have corrected the problem. It's very strange, though, that this step is only necessary when connected to PSN. I don't know if anyone else is likely to have this issue, but I felt it was worth mentioning if only for future forum searchers to stumble upon.		2011-08-27 21:41:00

Just went on an epic playthrough of as many entries as I could before my eyes started glassing over.. all I can say is dang!

I should have given more thought to the words I chose

I see now it was indeed rude. Though it wasn't my intention

I understand and accept, I'm not anywhere near fully confident with
my entry either. Due to... well I'm sure everyone who put effort into

Omg guys everyone is leaving cause they dont have time I dont either!!! Oh **** I m going to work all day in editing as much as I can! And probably it wont be as much as planned, probably I waited to long or it is that school started when I joined the contest
If I make it through, can I add more things once the contest is done?
And you renember I said there was going to be fight fire with fire, agent orange, etc... Too late now, but I wish I could add them after the contest is done, I have Tornado of souls for the lev, Rust in peace... Polaris for the intro, and an original song by me for the credits, but I plan on making Overkill - feel the fire on one day for the boss battle! Again, I didnt add as much as planned so only playable character is Viper ( If you are not familiar to Viper demos in the past, he is that badass assassin that runs preety fast )
I would like to add the other 2 characters at the end of the contest, can I? Oh and I just noticed how DJ negativitron and Shadow battle are the only levels that are non-traditional, so that means you dont use your own sackboy, well that will change cause mine is non-traditional too.		2011-08-29 12:00:00

I should have given more thought to the words I chose
to use before submitting that comment.

I see now it was indeed rude. Though it wasn't my intention
for it to be towards anyone who actually put some effort
into thier entry.

Although I said "majority" I tend to exagerate. I had played
several entries previously that had little to nothing to do with
this contest but were still labled as such, or were copies.

I understand and accept, I'm not anywhere near fully confident with

Your level wouldn't have been be disqualified anyway, since it's not stated in the rules, though I have to say that I'm really glad you took the time to sincerely address the situation.

The reason I ask is because playing some entries before the deadline may not represent the final products as people are constantly updating and fixing things so I was just curious about this up untill the deadline. No need to feel bad, I expect that everybody's suffered a few headaches keeping levels trim enough for the engine's limitations. Don't think of it as demolishing a masterwork so much as pruning a topiary. Can't have a scruffy-looking topiary!

It's quite a fiddly thing, too. At one point my level was broken by a piece of light matter floating in the distant emptiness. Six vertices in the void, serving only as a point of reference, were able to spoil the show. It seems terribly unlikely until you've deleted the chaff and found everything magically restored to order. That's just how this particular game is played.

So don't beat yourself up! I think the music sequencer has already given us enough bruises. 		2011-08-31 03:38:00

It would go by your (the builder/creator) local time, would it not? If I had a level to publish, I would have until 11:59 pm my time to publish the level, because the game would record it as having been published on 31 Aug 11. Right? I mean, I wouldn't be sitting here and going oh it's 7 pm here but in the UK it's 1 am 1 Sept 11 so I can't still work on my level. No, you wouldn't. Umm, I am a little confused bow after Biorugues comments which kind of makes sense... But I thought since the competition is based in UK times, even if it is day before or a day after where I a. personally located then I would still only have to follow and obey they UK times right? I need to do some final logical changes so since in UK it has not hit the 1st of Spetember yet, I will simply follow the UK time zone regardless of anything esle since the competion is UK based time zone and as OmegaSlayer said it, all times of publish are recorded in UK time on lbp.me which judging by this render your own time zone useless relative to your loca time zone's publish date... I will republish before 11.59UK time. This is perfectly fine I gather.		2011-08-31 18:32:00

You're correct, LFiers, the rules say levels must be published before 11.59 PM GMT on 31st August and mustn't be updated after that. We chose GMT precisely so we would be able to tell from lbp.me whether a level had been published on time or altered after the deadline.2011-08-31 18:50:00

Cut you some slack!? Ofcourse, you deserve it. Two main reason; 1): I can't stand the heat either and during those moments it often makes my brain think of the average scrambled eggs as moderately intelligent and 2): Some of your comments throughout these last weeks have made me laugh like no others have. I second what Mr. T-shirt said. I've been trying to pour through as many entries as time will allow me to and you all should be proud. Some really good levels, so good luck to you all.
And to the Contest Crew, thank you for your hard work and dedication and if you're accepting applications...I'm not a good creator but I am a good player, so unless the next round is who can create straight lines and squares, then I'd like to help out in some capacity. Scratch that, just realized the next round's judging would start in October and I'm extremely busy then, oh well. Keep me in mind down the road then.
