Complaining about the frequency of the autosave is a valid complaint, and I have had to go back significantly at least once because of it...

... but "no reason"?

I believe not saving and dying is a reason. If my airbags don't work, that's a fair complaint ... but if swerve into the wrong lane of traffic while not wearing my seat belt and then crash and die, I would not recommend arguing that I had died "for no reason".

For no reason other than the game didn't autosave.

AWESOME

1) Have you played Dragon Age Journeys (http://www.dragonagejourneys.com/) yet? If you play it now ... it's Free Gear you get for the actual game.

2) Any thoughts on your race/class/background choice you'd care to share?

I hate this game's autosave.

The last autosave it had was an event before I got to the Pearl in Denerim. I was working on the Stone Prisoner quest after I had completed the quest in The Pearl. As a matter of fact, I was done with the town and was killed in the basement of that house. Then, I had to restart at that spot in Denerim BEFORE I had completed that Pearl quest. This has made me lose a whole bunch of progress for no reason twice now.

that's why you don't rely on the autosave and use the MULTIPLE save feature...since you can have more then 1 save and delete them at will later on in your HDD...so yeah

Protip: Save every time you're at camp. And every time you're worried something big might happen (e.g. before the next floor of a dungeon).

Also, anyone notice that the conversations your party members have tend to be pretty funny? Example (Names omitted):

Mage: I see where your eyes are.
Templar: What? I was looking at your...nose.
Mage: And what is it about my nose that intrigues you so?
Templar: I was just thinking... how much like your mother's it is.
Mage: I. Hate. You.

If you know who I'm talking about, it's funny. If not, too bad.

Oh I love their convos in particular. They can get pretty interesting also depending on where you go in the story

I agree, but as a DLC character, (that character) I don't really think is on the table for them unless they picked up the DLC recently.

Personally, the character I really like - after that one - is (Omitted).

You have to admit, when (Omitted) is (Omitted) after (Omitted) ... that's just an awesome sequence. Assuming that happens in your story, which admittedly it wouldn't if (Omitted).

@ kmills11

Sent you a little mini-guide with some suggestions on how to figure out which class in this game is more ... aligned with your playstyle.

Had to do it by PM though as I couldn't post on your profile for some reason. Hope it helps.

EDIT: What follows below from here until the post "I'm done" basically consists of Shadowcrazy taking offense at an earlier post of mine, and us having a slap fight.

He has removed the "Spite Spoiler", so it's "safe" to read now - but it doesn't really amount to anything worthwhile. Feel free to skip forward, assuming you don't care to waste your time watching "Shadowcrazy" and I act like children.

Wow - huge rant for me not even saying anything about your post, and then following it up with some dry, self-deprecating humour on top of it (on the very subject that has you in a twist) that apparently just went over your head.

It's a forum thread on a video game, and no one even said anything about you. Relax man.

Also, notice what's a joke before you explode about it.

yeah it's a forum on a video game, and you don't need to say anything about my post...but when you mess around with my post in your quote it gets very irritating don't you think? i don't mess around with your quotes and do what i will with them and idk where you read in my post that i said anything about people talking about me...paranoid much?

also where am i talking bad about myself in my post? or are you using the computer science term for deprecating? either way they are both invalid

lol i love how you completely add tone to my text...and assume i just exploded...sorry sir but next time you shouldn't assume things...nor should you add any tone to my text.

but anyways it's still annoying that all you do is keep bugging me about spoilers even when i don't put one....makes me almost want to blurt out that shale is a ****** *****

Not every specialization is available from a tome. They are all, however, obtainable.

Mage:

Shapeshifter can be taught to you by a party member
Spirit Healer can be taught to you by a party member, or the tome can be bought off a merchant.
Blood Mage can be learned from a tome found in the Dalish Woods, or from a secret method
Arcane Warrior can be obtained by a secret method

Arcane Warrior can be learned in some ruins in the woods in Dalish territory.

The secret method for Blood Mage involves *being* a mage, being in the fade, and making a direct deal with a pleasure demon.

Rogue:

Bard can be learned from a party member.
Assassin can be learned from a party member.
Ranger can be learned from a tome bought off a merchant.
Duelist can be learned from a woman in Denerim - either by seducing her or defeating her in a game of slight of hand.

Warrior:

Templar can be taught to you by a party member, or learned from a tome bought off a merchant.
Beserker can be taught to you by a party member.
Champion can be taught to you by a lord.
Reaver can be obtained by a secret method

Reaver can be taught to you by Kolgrim, at the Temple of Andraste, assuming you make a friend of him

Maybe I'm crazy but I could swear I saw some of those on that dwarven travelling merchant. The one with the son that does enchantments...

Not crazy, that's a good source for a couple of them.

Dandygandy, just watched your Bioware Social page update. I see those achievements down there.

Went with something one way but then changed your mind, eh? Guilty.
At first, I thought I would just desecrate the Ashes because I said I would, but then Leliana completely turned against me, and she's my, like, absolute favorite, so I reloaded and didn't desecrate the ashes. But, then, I figured out that, to be a Reaver, I needed to desecrate the Ashes, so I reloaded again, desecrated the Ashes, fought Leliana and the Keeper (or whatever) unlocked Reaver class, reloaded again again, didn't desecrate the Ashes, killed wots-his-name after he yelled at me for being a liar, and continued on my merry way. Getting both trophies was a bonus.

It was the first, last, and only time I plan to take advantage of the way the game is set up, aside from turning down the difficulty at hard spots. ^^;;

My fiance' had to turn down the difficulty during the last boss fight of the game. Both my friend and I beat the game through on hard, and she was definitely tough enough in general to do it - but she got stuck in a situation where she didn't have any mana potions, and she was so dependent on her spellcaster that she didn't feel she could pull it off without mana potions.

There are people who've played the whole game through on Nightmare though, so never feel like you actually have to turn down the difficulty.

No, I know I don't have to do it, but, to be quite honest, I'm more concerned with advancing the story than having a challenging gameplay experience (that's being saved for the future, when I know more about the system and all that) so I play through on Normal as much as I can, but if I die three or more times on the same fight, I'll turn it down to Casual, breeze through the fight, and then turn it back up to Normal. I'm sure later on, I'll be doing runs where I never change the setting and just muscle through, but it's not this time. 2009-12-11 20:53:00

Good News and Bad News for all ... mostly bad news, but an incredibly small amount of good in there.

This was posted today by a Bioware employee regarding the new DLC...

Hi everyone. Sorry for not popping in and providing another update sooner. Based on some of the feedback in this thread, we made the decision to revisit Return to Ostagar and make some small improvements, including the addition of a new Ostagar-specific achievement/trophy and a reduction in the price. This has required a patch/title update and some additional testing and certification. This has pushed our dates back and I can confirm that the PS3 version will not arrive until the New Year. For PC and X360, we're still working hard to get it out in time for Christmas but we're not out of the woods quite yet. We'll put out another press release once we're 100% confident of the dates.

Thanks for your patience and I hope you enjoy the adventure once it's finally available.

For Ferelden!

Rob

Now the reason that's mostly bad news is obvious. The very small good part though that makes me a bit curious though is this "reduction is price". The REASON why this interests me is that long before this announcement, despite the DLC supposedly adding 3 zones you can access to the "mid-game map", the price was already mentioned as only being $5.

So ... it would appear that now it's LESS than $5?

Okay, so I haven't really been into this game lately, and here's why.

1. There's no way to really level up your character to prepare for battles later in the game. It feels like there should be some grinding but the game doesn't let you because enemies don't respawn and they scale to your level.

2. The map. To me, pressing where you want to go in the world takes a lot of immersiveness out of it. I guess I should have assumed this from KOTOR and Jade Empire, but selecting where to go in individual cities? That's just lazy, IMO.

Most people get either to or very close to the level cap (25) by the end of the game - so honestly I don't really see the need here. If you don't want to do some mission yet until you're tougher - do side missions. There's plenty of them out there.

2. The map.

This seems like a more valid thing to criticize. Not a big deal at all, in my opinion, but I think there are some fair map-related criticisms to be had. At least I still "felt" the travel - in the sense that there were points in the game where I thought of even a long "map-trek" as dangerous, and that factored into my decision as to where to go.

To me, pressing where you want to go in the world takes a lot of immersiveness out of it.

I agree, but I think that given how the game has to be set up to accomodate it's branching story/character nature, this is probably largely a technical limit.

But yes, I would prefer for it to be a Bioware style RPG in a fully mapped out Oblivion style "mega-world". That being said, I'm not holding anything up near that expectation in this generation of videogames.

For all the complete love I have for Oblivion's rendered world ... the game does suffer from a good few things due to its focus on it. I've yet to see a "best of both worlds". Perhaps when Bioware's Star Wars MMORPG hits with all of their branching storylines and recruitable side-character gameplay in it, but even then I don't know exactly how they'll handle the world.

selecting where to go in individual cities? That's just lazy, IMO.

Again, I believe this most likely related more to limitation than any kind of "stylistic choice".

Party member quests are generally pretty easy, if the two that I've done are anything to go by.

So, anyway, I got Dual Wield Mastery yesterday, so now I can have two longswords. I'm using a Red Steel Saw Sword (love) and a Red Steel Dar'Misu right now, since those seem to be the best things I can find.

And, can I just say that a certain decision that had to be made in a certain ruin in a certain forest seemed to have no right outcome? (Hope that was vague enough, but not too vague...)

I'm sure if you lure and then presuade this certain person, he changes everyone back and live happily ever after.

Of course I picked the "people" or the other people since like in every other game they're in, they suck.

I NEED to do leilana's quest, but it's so random and I have a feeling it's never gonna pop up, why is she so hard so sleep with?!

Rock, we're here to help you figure it out. After spending a few days in this thread before I got the game, I knew exactly what I was going to do, which made it that much easier later on. Wait for Jag to come around and he'll help you figure everything out.

Unrelated: I beat the game for the first time today. Level 18 or 19, 35-37 hours or so. As you've probably guessed, I skipped just about all the sidequests and lost a ton of playtime because of that. And, oddly enough, I felt...empty at the end of the game. Not because the ending was unfulfilling or disappointing or anything, I just didn't want it to end. Is that weird? I was sad to say goodbye to my Dalish warrior. In the week and a half or so that it took me to beat the game, I grew rather attached to him and the rest of the party (particularly a certain Orlesian bard ). I restarted with a Dwarven noble, but the origin didn't seem as good as the Dalish elf. It's likely I'll restart again (I've got the trophy, which is all I really wanted from that) with something that will stick better and play the game differently (using party members I neglected last time, etc.). Thoughts? Anyone else feel the same way when they beat it the first time?

So yes... um... I have no clue what I should do when I get :kz:

Well if you want to start gearing up for it now, I would recommend going and playing the mini-game Dragon Age: Journeys (just google it).

By playing the little turn-based mini-game, you can get free promo loot you can start the game with.

I didn't really want the game to end either - but I can pick up with the exact same character when Dragon Age 2 comes out, so it's not really the "end" for my character.

Anyways, as far as giving the game a second run through, just some thoughts -

If you really want to vary things up from your first character, running a mage might be worth considering now. I'm sure you NOW know where you can get the specialization for a mage to use melee skills (Arcane Warrior), which you mentioned an interest in early on.

I highly recommend the DLC if you haven't picked it up already. There's a new one about to come out, as well.

If you want to get a REALLY different story - also, consider running a character of the opposite gender as the last time you played. You control all of the characters in your party, so it's not like you weren't controlling both genders of characters before.

Heh, thanks, Jag. The only specialization I didn't unlock on my first playthrough was Blood Mage, so I'll be getting it my second time around. What I was planning on doing was running through using a completely different party than I used the first time (E.G. Dog, the Quanari prisoner, and the elf rogue) so that I can get a feel for more of them. I like the idea of being a mage this time, though.

I tried starting as a Dwarf Noble rogue, but that didn't work out too well since I wanted to use archery because I dual-wielded last time. I did complete the origin, though, and got my trophy, so I think I'll just erase that save and start over again. I didn't really like the dwarf noble origin, anyway.

*shrugs* Well, I wasn't the biggest fan of ranged combat to start with, and I just found the dwarf noble origin to be... lackluster in comparison to the Dalish origin. In the Dalish origin, I actually found myself hating humans for no real reason other than I was an elf and humans were jerks. The dwarf noble origin didn't have the same kind of character relatability to me. I didn't feel like a dwarf noble like I felt like a Dalish elf.2009-12-20 18:14:00

In the Dalish origin, I actually found myself hating humans for no real reason other than I was an elf and humans were jerks.

So, you were told from the start you were part of *Group A*, and you inherently found yourself hating *Group B*?

I have to say, although I've typically thought of Dalish as the least interesting background ... there is something to be said for a story that effectively induces bigotry in you, and then points out that you have it.

Yes, that's exactly what happened, Jag. I heard some stuff about the humans (or "shems" as the Dalish call them) and I just thought "Wow, humans really suck. I'm glad I'm an elf." And then I realised that I was suddenly racist...against myself. Odd, no?2009-12-21 01:08:00

I was a bit disappointed at this game for a while but it REALLY picks up after the game stops holding your hand so much!
A lot of things seem disappointing at first because they didn't meet my expectations or preferences but seconds later i always find myself in favour of them somehow

The characters and voice acting really aren't as bad as i thought they were when i first watched some gameplay videos either. The voice acting is actually really good for some characters and the story can becomes more and more immersive.

Still haven't seen much of this game so far but i'm looking forward to whatevers comin up

Oh and i just thought i'd mention, i'm getting the same hatred towards humans as a magi elf xD
At the moment it's not as bad as it was during the origin story though.

I think I agree with just about everything Dex says. If you pay attention to some of the dialogue, Dex, you'll notice that some characters say things like "tis" all the time, and it works! Like, you barely even notice it because of how natural it sounds. It's things like that that make this game so awesome.

Now, if only I could get my stupid Stone Prisoner and Dragon Armor DLCs to work... *grumble grumble*

Necrobump a bit, but I gotta bring this topic back!

Anyway, I restarted a few more times and now I'm a ranged-focused city-elf rogue. I just have the two human origins and the mage origin to get all those trophies (but it's not like I'm farming them). I'm going to go through this play doing everything this game has to offer, talking to everyone, doing all the sidequests, etc., because I missed out on a ton of stuff because I wanted to keep the plot moving. Now I know what happens I can take my time.

So, speaking of which, anyone have a general idea of the "best" order to take the treaties in? Last time I went to the dwarves WAY too early and ended up playing the entire section on Casual, so I wanna kinda avoid that this time. I was thinking mages, Dalish, Redcliffe (and Haven), and dwarves. That seem like a good strategy?

dalish is always the best choice for early play...since you can get a really useful and strong armor set really early in the game, and this armor set is REALLY useful in the Urn quest against a certain beast.

as for what comes next i would say just play how you feel. for me i played as a dwarf noble and i tried to hold off the dwarf are until late in the game....to sort of make the homecoming more memorable to me when i got there

I thought Dalish was a good first mission

I chose the Dwarf one for my 2nd and ended up playing in casual, even now it's too hard though. Think i might leave it half finished and do something else first xD

I bought this back in November, but finally started playing it about a week ago. I'm really, really enjoying it so far. I decided to go play as a Rogue city elf, so if anyone has any tips or tricks for me, feel free! In the meantime, I'll be digging through the rest of this thread to hear about all the experiences you guys and gals have had.2010-01-09 21:18:00

If you're ranged, put 30-35 points into Dex and the rest into Cunning. Get the skills for picking locks early on, as well. Stealth is cool, but not essentially vital. Stealing doesn't do anything, so don't bother. Finally, have fun and feel free to disregard everything I've said if you want. After all, it's your game and it's pretty hard to "do it wrong" as it were.2010-01-09 21:28:00

actually stealing DOES STUFF. like any other game you get things from random money to random items. and having the steal ability opens up one of those mini-questlines where you steal stuff from people for this one guy. but yeah anyways stealing does do things tho

At the end of the day, though, whatever you get from stealing is negligible and you'd be better off spending your talent points on something more useful.2010-01-10 15:11:00

I actually got some very powerful items through stealing But .. ahem... a certain character I drafted came with the ability

I haven't played this in forever, I left off at redcliffe for the longest time. MNR beta kind of took over.

That beta wasn't too bad...but DA:O is fantastic! I'm a human mage (i know, if you're a mage, be an elf...meh), and I often feel like a god. especially with the blood mage specialization.2010-01-11 01:39:00

Yeah that was a fairly major necro. :L

Anyway, I borrowed this off a mate a while back but I never got into it because he gave me it at about the same time that FFXIII came out so I hadn't got time for DA:O.

I beat this game 5 times. But you know what I could never do? Get a roll in the hay with Leliana. I'm not sure why, I think I always screw up a convo with her at some point, she's always in love with me at full like meter and all.2010-07-19 15:16:00

did she tell you about marjolaine? (whatever her name was) that's the quest of hers you need to do to get her in bed

also let me start by saying awakenings disappointed me....it was a decent game....but it was TOO SHORT for one...and the ending was just like origins in which once you finished you couldn't save and replay from where you left off doing quests you didnt finish (please dont mention that in origins you could do DLC missions...because those dont count since you have to BUY those DLC missions)

anyways in loved Origins and am proud to say i platinumed it....a shame that awakenings wasn't so great

and now Dragon Age 2 is going the Mass Effect route with a fully voiced human (thats right ladies and gentlemen your previous save of origins is worthless because you cant be an elf or dwarf :/)

I finished it as a human fighter. Then just recently, I was going to run through as an 'evil' rogue just for fun, but decided I had already seen all the highlights of the game, so its time to return it to Gamestop to put more money towards LBP2!! 2010-07-20 18:12:00

GS will rip you off ALL THE TIME...so my take on it is to NOT GIVE GAMESTOP A DIME/GAME...you could make WAY MORE MONEY selling it to a friend or on the streets

GS will give you 25% of the MAIN price and behind your back sell it for $5 below the main price

Dalish = Superior race

although i have to say i'm a little dissappointed in no dark elves or anything like that...very limited races...but they aren't bad races so no complaints

I'm playing as a Dalish

I just got Shale to join me from the DLC as well, he's cool.

And the cutscene when you leave the town is brilliant
